Georgia Southern was defeated by Northeast Ixiuisiana

Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks suffered their seventh NBA defeat
in I Andover, Maryland last night, losing to the
Washington Bullets, 96-90.
Tar Heels
North Carolina star running back Mike Voight suffered
an ankle injury in yesterday’s Peach Bowl practice, but is
still expected to start tomorrow when the Tar Heels meet
Kentucky. Voight is the fifth leading rusher in collegiate
football history and the Atlantic Coast Conference Player
of the Year.
Clark
Clark College coach Epps was handed the
400th win of his 28 year career as a college coach when his
Panthers beat Fisk 92-70 in the first game of the Atlanta
Basketball Classic.
Bulldogs
Superdome officials say a threatened strike by work
ders could damage the stadium’s reputation, but it won’t
affect the Sugar Bowl scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
Efforts are being made to avoid the strike.
Players and coaches for the teams scheduled to meet in
the New Year’s Day contest aren’t letting the stadium
problems interfere with their preparations.
The Pitt Panthers are trying to get ready for the veer
offense which they haven’t faced this year. And the
Georgia Bulldogs are concentrating on how best to stop
Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett.
Georgia fans are hoping last night’s Sugar Bowl
basketball classic wasn’t an indication of what will
happen to the Dogs Saturday. Georgia lost 74-52 to Indiana
and faces South Carolina tonight in the consolation round.
Flames
The Atlanta Flames lost to the Buffalo Sabres 6-3 last
night in the Omni. It was the ninth straight win for Buf
falo.

“People called us the worst 9-

“We had trouble making the
nation’s top 20. All season long
people kept pushing us down.
They said we didn’t play
anybody. They said all our
scores were close.
“Now don’t get me wrong,"
added Kupec, in Atlanta to
prepare for Friday’s Peach

"We are happy to be in the
Peach Bowl. But we are
disappointed. The Gator Bowl

than both.”

MIAMI (UPI) — Being an
assistant to Woody Hayes for
two years doesn’t buy you any
favors later, especially when
you square off against the
crusty Ohio State coach in the
Orange Bowl.
Hayes was asked about Bill
Orange
Mallory, who will pit his
Colorado Buffaloes against the
Buckeyes in the Orange Bowl
Football Classic New Year’s
night. Mallory was Hayes’
defensive line coach in 1967 and
1968.
“He’s a mean old cuss,”
Hayes joked. “I admire and
respect him, his wife and his
family.

That’s regardless of what

“I think the winner of the

Appearing together at a Rose

relaxed and jovial three days

"If we win,” said Robinson,

The Peach Bowl ranks about

They are both Rose Bowl

One of Kupec’s teammates,

feels Friday’s game against
Kentucky “will be a game of

nice to be a winner, in Atlanta

He sees both his Tar Heels

ATLANTA (UPI) - The
Buffalo Sabres have won nine

Georgia’s victory plan
is a very simple one
NEW ORLEANS (UPI) -
Georgia’s plan to beat top
ranked Pittsburgh in the Sugar
Bowl Saturday will be very
simple, according to Pitt
defensive coordinator Bobby
Roper.
“We know they’ll try to move
Sugar
the ball up the middle some to
keep us from crashing outside
on the option plays,” Roper
said Wednesday. “But we feel
like we’re really solid up the
middle.
“They know that and they
know their strength is in

while over in the Atlanta

Fred Creighton slumped in a

“They are the kind of team
that capitalizes on mistakes,”
Creighton said of Buffalo.
“They’re a hockey club playing
with a lot of confidence right
now. They have a lot of
momentum and are playing
very, very well.”
Someone mentioned Sabres
football.
In the Georgia veer offense,
Goff usually fakes to fullback
Al Pollard and either keeps or
pitches back to tailback Kevin
McLee, a 1,000-yard performer.
Pitt hasn’t faced the veer all
season.
“If we can’t stop that outside
play,” Roper said. “They’ll run
it every down and they’ll keep
the ball all day.”
For the Georgia defense,
nicknamed the “Junkyard
Dogs,” the challenge is a big
Pitt offensive line and Dorsett.
Junior linebacker Ben Zam
biasi said the big reason for the
Georgia’ defensive improve
ment this season was experien
ce.
“We figure that the fourth
quarter will be the key one,”
Zambiasi said. “As a result,
goalie Gerry Desjardins, who
has a goals-against average of

Luce of Buffalo and Tom Lysiak
of Atlanta scored to make it 2-2

Sabres ahead for good.
Richard Martin, Fred Stan
