Exercise and diet
| help heart ills

DEAR DR. LAMB - I read
an article in the paper where
two heart specialists were dis
cussing heart disease. They
said heart ailments could best
be treated with exercise and
diet rather than using drugs.
They did not mention what
kind of exercise or diet a heart
patient should use. I wish you
would give me some facts on
dieting and exercise that a
person could best use. I am
real anxious to know what
comments you would give on
this subject.
DEAR READER - In ar
ticles and on TV programs the
short space of time often
prevents a complete presenta
tion of the problem. Exercise,
diet and not smoking are all
important in preventing heart
disease and strokes. They are
not the answer, however, in
some forms of heart disease,
and they do not replace
properly used medicines.
A person’s exercise
program depends entirely on
what condition the heart is in.
When a person has had a heart
attack and the valves in the
heart have been damaged to
the point he can’t walk the
length of a hospital ward, it is
foolish to talk about jogging to
cure his damaged heart. A
patient with rheumatic heart
disease and damaged valves
may need an operation and not
an exercise program. There is
literally no form of heart dis
ease. though, that is benefited
by obesity. The same applies
to smoking cigarettes.
I think anyone who knows he
or she has heart disease
should not start an exercise
program without discussing it
with his or her doctor, familar
with how much heart damage
is present.
There is a great deal of
difference in what you can say
to the public about exercise

Polly’s Problem
DEAR POLLY — My Problem is with oil on a vinyl
carpet. How can I remove it? Also, I am starting a
matchbook cover collection and would appreciate hear
ing how the readers might have mounted such collec
tions or how they put them in a book without ruining
them. Any information will be appreciated. — CONNIE.
DEAR CONNIE — Os course, all stains should be
removed immediately — the longer one waits the less
likely removers are going to work. You could use a com
mercial dry cleaning product and follow directions. Or,
a teaspoon of white vinegar in three tablespoons
lukewarm water. Do not drench but carefully apply only
where needed. Let dry five minutes, blot up and follow
with clear water put on the same way. To hasten the
final drying a fan might be placed nearby. Brush up pile
to fluff it. This is recommended in an American Carpet
Institute booklet, but no matter what one uses it should
be tested first.
I am sure you will be hearing from readers concerning
your matchbook collection. They are always so
generous about sharing their clever ideas with others. —

DEAR POLLY — My Pet Peeve is with the way manufac
turers of bedlinens package their products, particularly
pillowcases. Many times one has a single bed but is forced to
buy a pair of pillowcases because they are packaged that way.
The extra one may not be used much and also it would be less
expensive if we could only buy the one needed one. — CAROL.
DEAR POLLY — There seems to be so much doubt about
the cleaning of plastic bathtubs and showers so I want to tell
the other readers how I do it. I use any shampoo that is made
for oily hair and scrub it on with several thicknesses of nylon
net folded together. The job is done in no time and I then rinse
and enjoy.
To scrub mold and mildew out of the tile joints I use one-half
cup of that well known household disinfectant to a gallon of
water and then rinse off. I turn up the heat and let the
moisture evaporate and then spray with that non-stick product
used on kitchen pans or a silicone spray so it will be easier to
get off the next time. Using this non-stick product on the
shower doors will make them slide quietly and easier and also
protect them from sticking. — K.M.W.
DEAR POLLY — To keep lamps, vases and other such
things from marring wood, marble or plastic table or counter
tops I glue on a patch cut from a clean plastic tray such as
meat or fruit come in from the grocery. Any household glue
will work and the protruding edges can be trimmed so that the
patch is almost invisible. — MRS. J.M F.

for people who have never had
a heart attack and those who
have heart damage already.
However, my rule of thumb is
to tell people to walk. If you
can’t walk a city block at a
normal pace without trouble
you must follow carefully
what your doctor says about
exertion, and don’t try to do
anything he does not recom
mend.
Otherwise most people can
gradually increase their walk
ing program. Those who can
build up to walking an hour a
day — which can be done in
divided sessions such as mor
ning and evening — usually
gain health benefits. I don’t
recommend progressing
beyond a walking program
without an evaluation of your
status by your doctor. Those
who then appear to be able to
tolerate it can be encouraged
to progress to more vigorous
activity, such as jogging.

the heart and circulation,
Volume I numbers 11 and 12.

Exercise is like any other
form of treatment. It can be
very beneficial, but if used
wrongly it can be damaging.
Diet is in the same ball park.
A diet that controls calorie in
take and provides a low-fat,
low-cholesterol menu is often
helpful. The crash efforts,
often containing excess fat
are not. A gradual loss of ex
cess fat is the sensible way to
improve your health without
damaging your body.
