Cincinnati
rips Indiana
By JOSEPH A. REAVES
NEW ORLEANS (UPI) -
The Cincinnati Bearcats are
ranked the No. 5 basketball
team in the nation, but there
may not be four better teams
around.
The Bearcats became con
tenders for the top national
ranking Thursday night by
beating defending national
champion Indiana 52-43 in the
title game of the Sugar Bowl
Basketball Classic. The win
came hours after No. 2-ranked
Notre Dame and top-ranked
Michigan were upset in sepa
rate holiday tournaments.
“It definitely was a big win,”
said Cincinnati coach Gale
Catlett. “Our game plan
worked just like we drew it up.
We wanted to control the tempo
of the game by utilizing our
experience against their
youth.”
Catlett was right — it was
Cincinnati’s experience and
Indiana’s youth which enabled
the Bearcats to push their
record to 9-0.
Indiana fielded a team of
freshmen and sophomores in
the second half after irate
coach Bobby Knight benched
senior center Kent Benson, the
only returning starter from last
year’s national championship
team.
“Benson was playing very
poorly,” said Knight “I don’t
think the game changed one
iota when he was on the bench.
I don’t feel he has been the

Indiana, 5-4, trailed by six
points at the half, but came
back to lead by three with 14:15
to play. The Hoosiers then went
cold and during the next nine
minutes, Cincinnati scored 13
unanswered points.
As the lead evaporated,
Knight grew increasingly furi
ous. He finally pulled Benson
from the lineup and knelt in
front of his player on the bench
to deliver a screaming sermon.
“There is a tremendous
burden on (Benson’s) shoulders
this year and I don’t think he
realizes it yet,” Knight said
later.
Pulling Benson from the
game was just one of several
outbursts that highlighted the
Sugar Bowl title game. Knight
tossed a chair backwards five
feet when Cincinnati stole the
ball and made a quick basket
to take a six-point halftime
lead.
Then, after the game, Knight
marched his team off the court
as Cincinnati was being pre
sented the tournament trophy.
He locked himself and his
players in the locker room and
refused to admit reporters for
45 minutes.
“I’m a .... of a lot more
concerned about my players
than I am about you guys,” a
still angry Knight said when he
finally decided to talk. “It’s a

pion, is this afternoon’s Peach
Bowl game between Kentucky
and North Carolina and to
night’s Astro-Bluebonnet game
between Texas Tech and
Nebraska.
Both games promise lively
action but nothing compared to
the New Year’s Day fare
involving the Big Four Bowls of
college football as follows:
—Pittsburgh, 11-0 and ranked
No. 1 in the nation at the end of
the regular season, faces
fourth-ranked Georgia (10-1)
with Pittsburgh expecting to be
named national champion if it
wins.
—Michigan, 10-1 during the
season and ranked No. 2,
opposes Southern California,
also 10-1 and ranked No. 3, in a
game both coaches claim
should actually decide the
national champion.
--Maryland, 11-0 and ranked
No. 5, faces Houston, 9-2 and
rated No. 7, in the Cotton Bowl.
—Ohio State, 8-2-1 and
ranked No. 10, opposes Colora-
after a game with my players.”
But Knight’s outbursts were
just part of an emotional
tournament.
Earlier Thursday night,
Georgia coach John Guthrie
and South Carolina coach
Frank McGuire were ready to
explode. They had to be
restrained at the scorer’s table
while Sugar Bowl timekeeper
Ennis Grundmyer decided
which team had won the
tournament consolation game.
The controversy began with
10 seconds remaining in over
time and South Carolina lead
ing 74-73. Georgia picked up a
rebound and drove downcourt,
where forward David Reavis
hit a short basket which would
have give the Bulldogs a 75-74
win.
Both teams rushed onto the
floor claiming victory, and
referee Paul Galvin was forced
to ask the scorer’s table
whether Reavis hit his shot
before the final buzzer.
The official timekeeper shook
his head and said: “The horn
sounded two seconds before the
basket. The basket is no good.”
in the Georgia locker
room, Guthrie was able to
speak calmly.
“I thought it was good, but I
can’t fault the officials,” he
said. “They left it up to the
scorer. What else can I say?
They needed a gun. I didn’t
hear the buzzer.”

years, is about a five-point
favorite over a South Carolina
team, which has been called
“the worst 9-2 team in college
football.”
Kentucky has made a virtual
crusade of the game, coaches
and players insisting that they
want to prove the Wildcats
should have been ranked. At
the same time, South Carolina
is concerned because running
back Mike Voight injured his
ankle in practice Wednesday
and may not be in top physical
Dorsett.
Now slowing Dorsett down is
a big order in itself, but even if
they are successful in doing so
(and no one was this season),
the fourth-ranked Bulldogs are
not out of trouble by a long
shot.
“If they contain me, we have
other good running backs like
(quarterback) Matt Cavanaugh
and Elliott Walker,’’ said
Dorsett. "Duke concentrated on
me so hard earlier this year
that Cavanaugh threw for five
touchdown passes. And, don’t
forget our defense. Our defense
kept us in a lot of games this
year.”
us not forget the Pitt
defense. Georgia Coach Vince
Dooley certainly isn’t. Much
has been publicized about
Georgia’s “Junkyard Dogs”
defense, which shut out four
opponents and gave up just 10.7
points per game. But Pitt’s
defense, anchored by All-
America middle guard Al
Romano, gave up only 11.8
points per game and intercept
ed 24 passes.
“The key to this game will be
condition.
“There was a slight swelling
in the ankle but the report from
the doctor is that it is not too
bad,” said Coach Bill Dooley of
the Tar Heels. “He may not be
at full speed, but I expect him
to start.”
Nebraska was ranked 19th
compared with No. 8 for Texas
Tech but is a two-point favorite
on the basis of talent-evaluation
by neutral scouts. The key man
in this game is expected to be
which defense does a job in
controlling the offense,” says
Pitt coach Johnny Majors.
“Both teams have big play
defenses. Georgia’s defense is
very aggressive and they play
intensely. Our objective will be
not to get behind in long
yardage situations.”
Pitt’s offense is definitely the
more versatile. Georgia at
tempted only 5.1 passes per
game this season while Pitt has
been known to throw quite a bit
if the situation calls for it.
“I go into every game
thinking I’m maybe gonna have
to throw more, but I don’t
anticipate we will,” said
Majors.
Dooley feels if the Bulldogs
are unable to move the ball
against Pitt, his club has
virtually no chance of winning.
“Our offense must control the
ball and give our defense a

chance to rest,” said Dooley.
“It’s important that our defense
does not tire. They will get
tired if they have to stay on the
field too long. I’ve noticed that
Dorsett seems to get stronger
as the game goes on, mostly
because defenses tend to get
tired in the second half.
“If we can't slow him
(Dorsett) down, we don’t have
a chance. But we also must not
neglect the fact that Walker,
now that he is healthy, is an
excellent back and that Cava
naugh is extremely capable of
throwing the ball.”
Os major concern to Dooley is
the condition of the artificial
playing surface in the Super
dome. It is a fast surface, and
earlier this week many of his
players had trouble getting
their footing during workouts
there.

"Time to Run”...
There is no doubt that today we see the family
unit being attacked from every side, torn apart
and fragmented. TIME TO RUN is a motion

the silences between people, the unspoken
moments, and the moments of anger that don't
really accomplish anything. TIME TO RUN
openly offers the reality of Jesus Christ as an
answer to the human dilemma.
I feel that thousands of people will see a part

seeing it will be brought closer together in real
