Kentucky buries Irish
By 808 WESTON
LOUISVILLE, Ky (UPI) -
Notre Dame went into the
Kentucky basketball game
Thursday night with high hopes
of nailing down the nation’s No.
1 ranking, but came out with
those hopes buried in the rubble
of a 102-78 defeat.
The second-ranked Irish had
visions of replacing Michigan
as the top-ranked team in the
new year after the Wolverines
were upset by Providence
Wednesday night.
But, with a partisan sellout
crowd of nearly 17,000 cheering
them on, coach Joe Hall’s
seventh-ranked Wildcats were
in no mood to cooperate with
the Irish.
“Kentucky didn’t do anything
wrong against us,” lamented

EL PASO, Tex. (UPI) - For
the past month, Florida coach
Doug Dickey has been trying to
find a weak spot in Texas
A&M’s awesome defense. He’s
decided the best way to get
through the Aggies is to go over
them.
Texas A&M, which meets the
Gators in Sunday’s Sun Bowl,
ranked No. 2 in the nation this
season in defense against the
run, surrendering less than 100
yards per game. Only the pass

60 per cent, they ran well, and
they played great defense.”
“I thought we played a super
game against South Carolina
earlier this month, but our
overall performance against
Notre Dame even surpassed
that,” Hall enthused. “Notre
Dame actually played well
against us, but we just played
better.”
The Irish were well on their
way to their first defeat in
eight games midway through
the first half after Kentucky
broke a 14-14 tie with nine
straight points.
With Jack Givens hitting his
feathery jump shots with
uncanny accuracy and fresh
man Jay Shidler connecting
from long range, Kentucky
inflated its lead to 53-32 at the
half.
Givens earned near unani-
occasion.
Quarterbacks like Danny
Davis of Houston and Tommy
Duniven of Texas Tech found
enough passing success to lead
their teams to victories over
the Aggies, knocking A&M out
of the Southwest Conference
title race early in the season.
Aware of this, Dickey plans
to turn loose Florida quarter
back Jimmy Fisher in hopes of
pulling an upset in this year’s
final major bowl game.

ing through the air,” said

with a performance that
included 30 points on 15 of 19
shots, seven assists, five
rebounds, and two steals. He
also made no errors in 31
minutes of playing time.
Kentucky’s big men, Rick
Robey and Mike Phillips,
dominated the play inside
although both were in early foul
trouble. Robey wound up with
18 points and a game-high eight
rebounds, while Phillips had 15
points and seven rebounds in
his first game since he and
Shidler were suspended for two
games for curfew violations.
Veteran guard Larry Johnson
left the scoring to his Kentucky
Dickey as he sent his squad
through a light workout Thurs
day in preparation for the 3
p.m. EST kickoff Sunday.
“Fisher has been throwing as
well the last two weeks as he
did anytime during the sea
son,” added Dickey. “Our main
problem will be trying to match
up with them physically.”
Fisher is equally dangerous
with the pass or run, having
thrown for 10 touchdowns and
running for eight more this past
season in leading the Gators’ to
an 8-3 record and their fourth
straight bowl appearance.

was led by Toby Knight and

“Larry is going to blank a lot

Not only was the victory

Kentucky’s lost prestige from
its first defeat of the season
against Utah Dec. 18,but it also
should provide strong momen

Dickey has also been concerned
about stopping the Aggies’
offensive unit, which scored an
average 39 points per game the
final half of the season.
The Aggies, 9-2, have the
SWC’s leading scorer in
sophomore fullback George
Woodard. The 255-pounder
became only the seventh player
in conference history to score
more than 100 points as he

Texas A&M will start junior
David Walker at quarterback.
He had his first starting
assignment after the loss to
Texas Tech and guided the

The tipoff:
Gene Upshaw of the Oakland Raiders wants it known
that he’s pushing a move to make a soft protective
coating on plastic helmets — often used as offensive
bludgeons — mandatory. And practices what he
preaches by already using one that is covered with foam
padding.
Q. I am a Dallas Cowboy fan. On a telecast, I heard the an
nouncer refer to a “clothesline” tackle. What do they mean by
that? — G. 8., El Paso, Tex.
Mo |H6a|
It’s a ploy used by a defender, usually a linebacker, to hang
up an unsuspecting receiver. The latter, intent on racing
downfield, suddenly runs into an extended arm — sometimes
with drastic results to the offensive player. Officials look
askance at such tactics.
Q. How much does Fred Dryer, the defensive tackle of the
Los Angeles Rams, really weigh? I keep hearing how skinny
he is. — T.R., Garden Grove, Calif.
First, Freddie is a defensive end, not a tackle, and he plays
the right side of the line — away from most running plays and
where his forte as a pass rusher is stressed. He was originally
drafted by the New York Giants with the idea of making him a
linebacker, but 6-6 Fred proved a 225-pound defensive lineman
can make it in pro ball. He weighed 217 pounds when he came
out of San Diego but put a six-pound weight in his shorts when
the scouts put him on the scale, so they made him a first round
pick. He finished the current season at 224. He claims
leverage and position enable him to combat offensive tackles
50 pounds heavier.
Q. On a fourth down punting situation, why doesn’t the
punter fall back 20 to 25 yards behind the center to prevent the
punt being blocked? Every pro game I have seen punters do
not kick more than 15 yards behind center, which results in a
blocked punt. — W.G., Fullerton, Calif.
There would be more blocked punts at the distance you
suggest. The center pass would be more difficult It would
take more time. And the team rushing the kicker would have a
better angle to get at him. Also, it would cut down the distance
the kicks travel beyond the line of scrimmage. Pro teams are
now experimenting at 13 yards, rather than deeper, to help
their kick coverage.
Q. How and who are the professional football officials? How
are they selected and do they attend any kind of a training
course? — Leo Trimble, San Leandro, Calif.
Almost all of them are former college football officials who
were scouted by pro observers. Most are former players, at
least at the college level. Their work is also assessed during
the season by league observers. And they do attend a pre-
