Robber ignored
ATLANTA (UPI) — A would-be armed robber panicked
and fled when a female bank teller ignored his demands
and shouted for help Thursday.
Authorities reported a man carrying a gun approached
the teller, whom they declined to identify, as she walked to
the First National Bank’s drive-in booth in the Greenbriar
shopping center.
When he ordered her to open the booth, she reportedly
replied, “Even if you did get in, you wouldn’t get any
money because you don’t have the combination.’’
The gunman then told the woman to get into his rental
van, but she refused.
She then threw her keys into the bushes and shouted to a
cleanup crew in a nearby parking lot.
The would-be robber jumped in his truck and drove off.
Dickey weds
COLUMBIA, S.C. (UPI) — James Dickey, author of
“Deliverance’’ and numerous volumes of poetry, has
married a former student in a civil ceremony at Richland
County Courthouse.
Dickey, 53, widely-known Southern poet and novelist,
married Deborah Dodson, 25, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.,
Thursday in a civil ceremony attended only by the best
man and maid of honor.
It was Dickey’s second marriage. His first wife died in
October.
President-elect Jimmy Carter asked Dickey to write a

poem for his inauguration. The poem, already finished by
Dickey, will appear in the inaugural program, but there
are no plans for Dickey to read it at the ceremony.
Carter said Dickey was chosen because he is "the best
poet I know.’’ Dickey, a Georgia native, met Carter while
he was governor of Georgia.
Mrs. Dickey was an English major at the university
where Dickey is the poet-in-residence. The couple planned
to honeymoon in California.
Reverse bureaucracy
AUGUSTA, Ga. (UPI) — u. s. Kep.-eiect Doug Bar
nard, said Thursday it was time to reverse the growth of
the bureaucracy which has become “more bloated, more
costly and more powerful than ever.”
“America doesn’t need more government. We need
more efficient government,” the Augusta Democrat said
in a statement.
He outlined legislation he plans to sponsor, including a
“sunset” law to force periodic evaluation of federal
agencies’ performance records, when Congress convenes.
Another bill he will introduce would require new laws to
be accompanied by estimates as to cost and effect on the
economy, he said.
Without bond
COLUMBUS, Ga. (UPI) — A 38-year-old Macon man,
charged with the murder of a Columbus policeman,
kidnaping and armed robbery, was held without bond on
two counts, following a preliminary hearing here Thur
sday.
Recorder William Slaughter of the Columbus Recor
der’s Court did not set bond for Ronald K. Spivey on the
murder and armed robbery charges. Bond of $50,000 was
set on the kidnaping charge.
Spivey, who was captured in Wedowee, Ala., Tuesday
morning only hours after he went on an alleged crime
spree in Macon and Columbus which left two men dead
and two injured, was held at the Muscogee County jail.
Defends Ford
ATI .ANT A (UPI) — A leading state Republican denied
Thursday allegations that President Ford turned down
direct Atlanta-Ixindon air service routes out of political
spite.
Mack Mattingly, the state Republican chairman, said
“Ford waited until after the election because he didn’t
want it to be political.” Delta Air Lines requested the non
stop flights.
Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson and Delta Board
Chairman W. T. Beebe charged that Ford’s decision to
return Delta’s application to the Civil Aeronautics Board
was an act of retaliation against President-elect Jimmy
Carter's victory.
Gov. George Busbee said the decision "prolongs a
pattern of regulatory discrimination against the South.”
