stopped a vehicle for a routine
inspection sticker check. The
sticker had been partially
scraped off. The driver was
William Raymond Kinney, 218
Jackson street, Thomson.
After running a check of the
car tag number through the
national computer network, the
lawmen learned the vehicle had
been stdlen in Florida.
Kinney was being held on
charges of possessing a stolen
auto and driving with an illegal
tag.
Two men have been accused
of not paying for gas at a local
service station.
They were identified as
Jimmy E. Boynton, 20, of Route
One, Box 76, and Philip E.
Varnadoe, 20, of River road,
McDonough.
According to Griffin police
they were accused of taking $lO
worth of gas from the U-Serve,
U-Save service station on
Everee Inn road and driving
away without paying for it.
Police apprehended the two a
short time after receiving the
report from a station employe.
An employe of the Top Dollar
Store on South Hill street
reported someone walked out
with an electric hair dryer
without paying for it.
An 11-year-old boy was
caught stealing two packs of
cigarets from Clark’s
Supermarket Saturday, police
said.
Three pistols and a AM-FM
radio were stolen from the
home of Alton Bradley, 1483
Beatty street.
Coleman Jackson, 1119 Pine
Valley road, reported the theft
of a hubcap from his 1977
Cadillac.
Police also investigated a
reported burglary at the Deck
Club on West Poplar street.
There was no report on what
was missing. __
Kiwanis sets
pancake sale
The Griffin Kiwanis Club has
scheduled its annual pancake
sale for Feb. 19, at the Griffin
High cafeteria.
Money raised will go to the
club’s charities.
Tickets will be $1.25 each.
Pancakes will be served
throughout the day beginning
with breakfast and ending with
the evening meal.
90 arrests
Saturday and Sunday state
troopers made 90 arrests,
including four for drunk
driving. Sixty-six warnings
were issued.

Ice storm closes schools
classes on March 4 which is an end of
quarter holiday and that teachers work
June 9 to make up for the lost time.
This would not change the five-day
Easter holidays and the scheduled end
of school June 3, he said.
The Griffin Police Department
reported city streets generally in
driving condition this morning.
The State Patrol Post in Griffin
reported some fender bender accidents
in the area but none of them serious.

Mrs. Peeples
Mrs. Mattie Elder Peeples of
652 South Eighth street died
Sunday at the Spalding
Convalescent Center . She had
been a patient there for a year.
She is survived by three
daughters, Mrs. Peeples
Bogan and Miss Eloise Peeples,
both of Griffin, Mrs. Sarah
Peeples Mathews of Atlanta;
two sons, Jerome Peeples and
Walter Peeples, both of Griffin;
a sister, Mrs. Annie Lois Daniel
of Griffin; three brothers,
Jimmy Madisor Elder, John
Elder, both of Atlanta, and
Elmore Elder of lowa.
One injured
in accidents
The Griffin post of the
Georgia State Patrol reported
three traffic accidents with one
injury over the New Year’s
weekend in Spalding, Henry and
Butts counties.
Therman Morgan, Jr., 23, of
Richlands, N. C., was injured
when his auto struck a bridge on
North Hill street near
Tuskeegee avenue around 3:15
a.m. Sunday.
He was carried to the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital for
treatment.
Griffin police investigated a
traffic accident with an injury
around 7 o’clock Saturday
morning in the parking lot of the
Regency Apartments on Boyd
row.
0. G. Lowe, 45, of 457 North
Second street, was injured when
his car and a vehicle driven by
Clarence Bush of 203 Pinetree
circle collided, police said.

$137,440.50 was returned to five
lucky bettors. The amount wa
gered on the $3 twin totaled
$192,909. Each of five winners
received $27,488.10.
The Friday night double ex
acta meant picking the first
two horses in the sixth race at
Monticello Raceway and the
first two across the line at
Roosevelt Raceway here. The
takeout amounted to $55,469.50.

death. Robert V. Sims, 60, of Hampton
who had been dismissed from the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital Sunday was
stricken ill south of Hampton on
Georgia Highway Three this morning.
He apparently got out of his car and
died, troopers reported.
A cold drizzle continued in Griffin this
morning. The weather forecast
indicated there would be no major ice
storm here from the cold front moving
into Georgia from the Gulf, across
I>ouisiana and Alabama.
Mr. Woodall
Mr. Henry Grady Woodall, 87,
of Concord street, Zebulon died
unexpectedly at his residence
Sunday morning.
Mr. Woodall was born in Pike
County, son of the late Daniel
James Woodall and the late
Jennie Blackman White
Woodall. He had made his home
in Zebulon for 30 years and was
a retired wholesale grocery
salesman and farmer. Mr.
Woodall was a member of the
Fincher United Methodist
Church, a member of the
Georgia Farm Bureau and a
former member of the Pike
County Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Minnie Holmes Woodall of
Zebulon; a son, Henry Grady
Woodall, Jr., of Anniston, Ala.;
a daughter, Mrs. Carolyn W.
King of Columbus; three
sisters, Mrs. Mary W. Dobbs,
Mrs. Jennie W. Sims, both of
Barnesville and Mrs. Sarah
Timberlake of Jackson, Tenn.
The funeral will be conducted
at 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon
in the chapel of Haisten Funeral
Home in Barnesville. The Rev.
J. Bill Huffman will officiate
and burial will be in Greenwood
cemetery.
Mrs. Huckaby
Mrs. Annie Mae Borders
Huckaby of 525 West Solomon
street, wife of Robert G.
Huckaby, died at the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital Saturday
night after a short illness.
Mrs. Huckaby was a native of
Troup County and had made her
home here since 1943. She was a
member of the Hanleiter United
Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband she
is survived by a son, Roy Lane
Oliver of LaGrange; two
daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Talley
of LaGrange and Mrs. Doris
Fincher of Hayward, Calif.;
four sisters, Mrs. Mildred
Copeland, Mrs. Annie Green of
LaGrange, Mrs. Alma Osborne
of Peachtree City and Mrs. Sara
House of Jacksonville, Fla.
The funeral was conducted
this afternoon at 3 o’clock from
the Unity Methodist Church in
LaGrange. The Rev. Floyd
Tenney officiated and burial
was in Hillview annex cemetery
in LaGrange. Haisten Funeral
Home of Griffin was in charge
of plans.
Mrs. Banks
Mrs. Nell Parmelee Banks of
524 West Poplar street died
early this morning at the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital where
she was admitted on Tuesday
from the Living Center of
Griffin.
Mrs. Banks was the widow of
Mr. Willis G. Banks. She was
born in Spalding County,
daughter of the late Perry
Sinquefield Parmelee and the
late Ella Camp Parmelee. She
was a member of the First
Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. Eleanor B. Bedgood of
Athens; seven grandchildren,
Miss Mary Kathryn Banks of
Griffin, William R. Bedgood 111,
Mrs. John A. Green, James D.
Bedgood, all of Atlanta, Mrs.
Robert F. Miller of Alpharetta,
Richard C. Bedgood of Chicago,
111., Robert E. Bedgood of
Athens, four great
grandchildren, several nieces
and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted
Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock
in Haisten’s chapel. Dr. Bruce
M. Morgan and the Rev.
Hartwell E. Kennedy will
officiate and burial will be in
Oak Hill cemetery. The body
will remain at Haisten Funeral
Home.
Mr. Williams
Mr. Arthur Williams of 703
South Eighth street died Sunday
morning at the Spalding
Convalescent Center where he
had been a patient for two
years.
Mr. Williams was a member
of St. Phillips AME Church and
a retired janitor of Griffin High
School.
His survivors include a niece,
Mrs. Marjorie Hayes
Patterson; a cousin, Mrs.
Eunice Mathews; and a sister
in-law, Mrs. Susie Lovett.
Funeral plans will be
announced by Spalding

James Harrison, popular
businessman, has retired from
Jones-Harrison after some 30
years of being in business in
Griffin. He and Charles Jones
founded the furniture following
World War 11. Harrison has
been active in civic affairs, and
is a long time member of the
American Business Club,
