election to name his successor
to a Republican.
Young’s election to the U.S.
House of Representatives in
1972 marked the first time since
Reconstruction that a black had
been sent to Congress from the
Deep South.
But a field of as many as 10
Democrats could be vying
against only two Republicans in
a non-partisan election follow
ing Young’s expected con
firmation as U.N. Ambassador.
The list of announced Demo
cratic candidates include the
Rev. Ralph Abernathy, presi
dent of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference; Mar
jorie C. Thurman, state Demo
cratic party chairman; John
Lewis, a black who recently re
signed as executive director of
the city’s Voter Education Proj

black state representative; and

Wyche Fowler, the white presi
dent of the city council.
All were members of the
black-white coalition which
helped Young defeat his con
servative Republican opponent,
Fletcher Thompson in 1972.
If, however, they split the
Democratic vote, the likely
beneficiary of the division will
be Republican Paul D. Cov
erdell, a white and the state
Senate’s minority leader.
Abernathy believes it would
be a “tragedy” if a black did not
represent Atlanta’s sth con
gressional district. “We have
only 17 blacks in the House and
if we lost this, that would make
16 out of 435,” he said.
