SHOOTS A 65
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Bob
Zender, a 33-year-old former
Chicago insurance broker, has
failed to win a PGA tour event
in six years. He’s what they call
a “rabbit” because he must
scramble to qualify for the
weekly events. He was the last
man on the course in the San
Diego Open the first day and
shot a 65 to tie Tom Kite for the
lead after 18 holes.
Zender earned only >6,865 on
the 1976 tour. But now he may
be on his way after getting a 65
by sinking a birdie putt on the
final par 5 hole here.
NEW BELMONT STALLS
ELMONT, N.Y. (AP) - Two
new bams, one of 50 stalls and
another of 44, will be ready this
spring when the thoroughbreds
return from Florida and Cali
fornia racing. Previously, 106
new stalls were completed for
the 1977 New York racing sea
son.
Most of the horses now run
ning at Aqueduct through May
21 are stabled at Belmont Park,
15 miles to the East.
CANADIENS RUN WILD
MONTREAL (AP) - The
Pounds, William Scott and Rex
Young.
Montreal Canadiens seem to
have their eyes on another
Stanley Cup. The 1975-76 cham
pions are running away with
honors in the Wales Conference.
In their first 50 games they were
beaten only seven times and led
Pittsburgh by 29 points and
third place Los Angeles by 45.
The Detroit Red Wings, play
ing in the same division with
Montreal, have one of the Na
tional Hockey League’s poorest
records this season. They won
only 13 of their first 49 games.
