Man goes on shooting spree
A Griffin man was arrested
after he apparently went
, berserk and engaged in a wild
* shooting spree Thursday night,
at the OK Oil Co. at Taylor and
Sixth streets.
Thieves
' hit car
Some S4OO worth of items
were stolen from Bobby
* Gibson’s car, Spalding Sheriff’s
officers said.
Gibson, who lives at Carey’s
,• Trailer Park, told lawmen his
1972 model compact was stolen
while he was fishing at the city
reservoir.
* Before he reported the theft to
the sheriff’s department, the
auto was found on the Mclntosh
road and returned to Gibson’s
residence.
Missing from the vehicle were
a fishing tackle box, semi
automatic pistol, 2 fishing rods
and an automotive screw jack.

* Route 1 reported the theft of a
12-gauge shotgun from her
vehicle while it was parked at
\ Market Square on Ga. 16
Thursday.
Batteries were stolen from
»’ the parking lot of Spalding
Knitting Mills Thursday.
Owners were Charles

Ernest Lee Akins, 31, of 814
Pool road, was taken into
custody shortly before 10 p.m.
after allegedly firing 12 shots
into the air.
Witnesses told police that
Akins, a regular customer of the
company, drove into the station
and after putting gasoline into
his car, jumped up on the hood
and then to the top of the
vehicle.
He took off his coat, hat, ring,
watch and glasses and threw
them to the ground, they said.
He then pulled out a pistol and
fired 6 wild shots into the air. He
reloaded, jumped to the ground
shooting and walked around the
lot continuing to shoot until the
gun was empty, they said.
Griffin police officers arrived
while he was attempting to load
the weapon again.
A container with 10 assorted
pills and a syringe were found
Mrs. Boyd

library media specialist at Pike
County Primary School, has
been elected state president of
the Georgia Library Media
Department.
Mrs. Boyd received her
education in the Griffin-
Spalding County Schools. She
earned the AA degree from
Gordon and the BS degree in
education from Tift College. She
received the master’s degree
from the University of Georgia.
Mrs. Boyd resides at 665
Garrett street with her
husband, James. The couple
has two daughters, Mrs. Adelia
Dixon and Mrs. Mary Catherine
Ivey, both employed as
teachers.

There were about 4 people at
the station during the incident
and none were hurt.
About the only damage was to
Akins’ car, made when he
jumped from the top to the
hood, lawmen said.
Akins was charged with
discharging firearms in the city
and violation of the Georgia
Controlled Substances Act.
He was being held in the city
jail.

Coed Y Clubs will attend the
1977 northwest district Youth
Assembly workshop Saturday
at Jonesboro High School.
At the workshop the members
will be taught parliamentary
procedure and how to debate
bills in preparation for the State
Youth Assembly to be held April
6-9.

Former Griffinite
is NMS finalist
Samuel A. Smith, son of Mr.
and Mrs. James Smith of
Prospect, Ky., and grandson of
Mr. and Mrs. Myles Smith, Sr.,
of Griffin, has been named a
1977 National Merit Scholarship
finalist. He is one of 14,000 high
school seniors across the
country still competing for
money.
Smith, a fromer student at
Griffin High School, is a senior
at Oldham County High School
where he is a member of the
Beta Club and National Honor
Society. His plans for the future
include the study of
engineering.

will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. until
2 p.m. This will be the last sign up day
for those from 13-15 years old. Those 16-
18 years old will also sign up on
Saturday and on an additional day in
May.
Special program
Ron Smith and the Heirs of Glory will
be at the New Life Christian Assembly,
located on High Falls road Saturday
night, beginning at 7 p.m. On Sunday
the Rev. Smith will be guest evangelist
at the morning service, 11 a.m., and the
evening service, 6 p.m.
Car wash
There will be a car wash, sponsored
by the Merritt Singers of Fellowship
Baptist Church Saturday from 9 a.m.
until 4 p.m. in the church parking lot.

The dinner theater at Griffin
Academy will be held tonight and
Saturday night and will feature “The
Matchmaker”. Reservations are
required for the dinner theater tonight.
Dinner is served at 7 p.m. and the play
begins at 8 p.m.
For the Saturday performance no
dinner will be served and tickets are on
sale at the door.

Spalding Junior High Unit I Coed Y
Club will sponsor a car wash at the
Griffin High parking lot Saturday from
10 to 12 p.m. Price $1.50. Proceeds will
be used for the world service fund to
establish Y Clubs throughout the world.
