Pancreas helps form Insulin
DEAR DR LAMB - How
do you know when there is
something wrong with the
pancreas?
DEAR READER -
Sometimes you don’t. The
pancreas from animals is
used as sweetbreads. The
rounded head of the gland fits
into the U-shaped first portion
of the small intestine. The tail
of the pancreas extends to the
left. The organ is just under
the stomach and rests against
the spine.
The pancreas has two parts.
The glandular substance that
forms pancreatic juice drains
through a tube into the small
intestine This juice contains
enzymes to digest car
bohydrates, fats and proteins,
so it is pretty important. The
islets of Langerhans seeded
throughout the pancreas make
up the other part. They are
responsible for insulin forma
tion and hormones that are
carried by the blood to control
your level of blood glucose.
The residual effects of
damage to the pancreas can
cause diabetes or it can limit
the capacity of your body to
digest foods. The latter
problem is associated with
frequent large bowel
movements that contain lots
of undigested fat. Weight loss
and deficiencies of vitamins
and minerals can occur
because of absence of normal
pancreatic juice and its im
portant enzymes.
Sometimes there is an acute
inflammation of the pancreas,
called acute pancreatitis.
When this happens there is
usually severe pain, often
starting in the pit of the
stomach but usually
generalizing to the entire ab
domen and even the back. The
patient may feel more com
fortable sitting up rather than
lying down
Along with the pain, the
patient may even have a
shocklike state and may need
treatment for shock. The doc
tor will note the extreme
Ask Dick Kleiner
Sign needs a fix
DEAR DICK: I recently read an article in my newspaper
that said they might take down the 54-year-old HOLLYWOOD
sign, which stands on Mt. Hollywood. Is that true? BRAD
COREY, Tucson, Ariz,
Everybody here hopes not. The Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce is trying to raise enough money to keep the sign
where it is. But it isn’t easy. The Chamber tells me they
wanted to arrange a big benefit, full of movie and TV stars but
nobody would agree to do it. The city of Los Angeles says it
doesn’t have the money to do the necessary restoration job.
So, at the moment, the Chamber is appealing for donations. If
anybody feels so inclined, send your contributions to the
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, 6324 Sunset Blvd.,
Hollywood, Ca. 90028.
DEAR DICK: Has Frank Sinatra Sr.’s first wife, Nancy,
ever remarried? 8.F.V., Oneida, N.Y.
No, but she has long been the steady date of producer Ross
Hunter.
DEAR DICK: Are there any plans to re-run the movie,
“Roots,” this summer? And who portrayed the slave,
Fiddler? MONTE SNOW, Three Rivers, Mich.
ABC tells me that “Roots” will not be re-run for at least a
year, if then. Fiddler was played by Lou Gossett who used the
more formal name, Louis Gossett, Jr., for what he considered
his most important role.
DEAR DICK: I am a great fan of Paul Michael Glaser and
watch him every week on Starsky and Hutch. I would like to
know if he is going to be in any movies soon. He was super in
“The Great Houdinis.” LISA WAGSTAFF, Portage, Mich.
Glaser would like to do a film during his Starsky and Hutch
hiatus, but, so far, nothing has materialized. He’s had offers,
but hasn’t accepted anything. Incidentally, Glaser may only
do one more season as Starsky. He’s just finishing the second
year of a five-year contract, but is now in negotiations to get
out of that pact after next season.
DEAR DICK: Some years ago, there was a series about a
boat for hire. The only name I associate with the male star is
“Adam Troy.” Was that the character’s name or the actor’s
name, and what has happened to this man? POTTER,
Plaistow, N.H.
That must have been Adventures In Paradise, with Gardner
McKay playing the part of Adam Troy. McKay has since
become a reasonably successful playwright.
tenderness of the abdomen
and he may find a swelling
caused by an enlarged cyst of
the pancreas. In away the
pancreas is digesting itself
with its own enzymes. Blood
tests help to confirm that the
pain is from the pancreas and
not from a ruptured peptic ul
cer or any number of other
problems tht can cause acute
belly pain.
Other individuals have
chronic pancreatitis. The low
grade persistent disease of the
pancreas may be punctuated
with acute attacks of varying
severity. Or finally, as I men
tioned earlier, the pancreatic
disease may progress without
any distinct symptoms of pain
and finally there will be in
dications of poor absorption
from undigested food and
sometimes diabetes.
There are many causes for
acute and chronic pan
creatitis. A viral infection
may involve the pancreas.
Mumps is one example which
may involve the neck glands,
testicles and also the pan
creas. Gallstones with in
volvement of the bile duct
may affect the drainage of the
duct from the pancreas and
set off inflammation of the
pancreas.
Alcohol is a frequent cause
of pancreatitis. Anyone with
pancreatitis should not touch
a drop of alcohol in any form.
About half of the cases of pan
creatitis have no known
cause, infection, alcohol or
gall bladder disease. The
fourth most common cause of
death from cancer in men is
cancer of the pancreas.
