Bears stop Woodward, 20*6
Ricky Williams is as quick
and elusive as ever.
The sophomore tailback
showed Woodward Academy his
speed last night on touchdown
runs of 75,60 and 35 yards as the
Bears ran over the War Eagles
20-6 at College Park.
The special game ended three
weeks of spring practice.
Williams was just one of
many starters from last fall
who were impressive.
However, the thing that
surprised fans was the quality
of young players, whom Coach
Max Dowis is counting on to fill
gaps left by players, who have
completed their prep careers.
Griffin opponents had better
keep an eye on No. 79, Jeff
Jackson.
Jeff is a freshman linebacker.
He is extremely aggressive for
a youngster. He was the leading
tackler in last night’s game with
15. He made 7 of those in the
third period.
Bobby Vines is another
newcomer to the Griffin
defense.
He was a reserve quarterback
last fall. The defensive tackle
accounted for 7 tackles.
If Vines continues to improve,
Griffin will be strong at tackle.
Kent Head plays the opposite
side. He knocked a few people
around, making 7 individual
tackles.

The tipoff:
The Oakland Raiders have reaped virtually zilch com
mercially from their Super Bowl success — with the ex
ception of Ken Stabler and Fred Biletnikoff En
dorsements, commercials, appearances, etc., have
eluded veterans like George Atkinson, the 10-year safety
who got a big pre-game buildup because of his involve
ment in a couple of violent on-field collisions.
Q. Did Joe Altobelli, Tom Lasorda or Vern Rapp — getting
their first chance to manage in the majors — ever play big
league baseball themselves? — 8.E., San Rafael, Calif.
to
Os the three, Altobelli had the most experience, getting into
166 games over three seasons as a first baseman-outfielder
with Cleveland and Minnesota in 1955-57-61. Lasorda pitched a
total of 26 major league innings and never won a game - he
lost four for Kansas City in 1956. Rapp, a longtime minor
league catcher, never made it to the “bigs.” Notable thing
about all three new skippers: they insist, a la Sparky Ander
son, that their players look neatly clipped.
Q. Can you tell me what your version of an all-pro basket
ball team would be? I'm interested in your opinion. — David
S., Fountain Valley, Calif.
I start with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, all by himself, at center.
For guards, I pick Pete Maravich of New Orleans and JoJo
White of Boston, the latter because he’s the playmaker I'd
need. At the forwards, you have to go with Dr. J. Julius Erving
— and my mate for him is aging Rick Barry. There might be
some argument about having David Thompson of Denver in
stead of Barry, but Rick's all-around skills, including defense,
appeal to me more An alternate guard would be George Ger
vin of San Antonio.
Q. Could you tell me which heavyweight fighter has the
least number of pro fights on his record before attaining the
heavyweight title? — Kevin McDermott, Copperas Cove, Tex,
James J Jeffries won the heavyweight title in 1899, knock
ing out Bob Fitzsimmons in his 13th fight as a professional.
Next to him is Muhammad Ali, then known as Cassius Clay,
who stopped Sonny Liston in 1964 in his 20th pro bout. Ingemar
Johansson had 21 fights before he nailed Floyd Patterson for
the title in 1960.
Q. What is the future of Joe Washington of the San Diego
Chargers? I didn't hear much about him as a pro last year. —

1 Coach Dowis was concerned
about Griffin’s secondary.
He was happy with what he
saw last night.
Not only did J.C. Davis,
Reginald Warren, Jesse
Stewart, Greg Worthy and
Jimmy Ward play the pass well,
they were agressive on the run.
Warren had 5 tackles and
Davis 4.
The secondary turned in a
fine game despite the absence
of Tommy Joe Coleman, who is
sidelined with an injury.
He was one of three starters,
who missed the game.
Nose guard Eric Jackson and
offensive tackle Kenny Hunt sat
out the contest.
Bart Mills filled in at the nose
guard position. Coach Dowis
was happy with his
performance.
Zack Holmes got his first
taste of varsity action, filling in
for Hunt at offensive tackle.
Another impressive
newcomer was quarterback
Jeff Ector.
Ector gives Griffin speed at 1
that position.
“Although Jeff is eratic at
times, he is settling fast. He <
makes a lot of good plays and <
some bad ones. What we want is i
i more consistency and I believe
i he’ll come around,” Coach
Dowis said.
Russell Miller opened at
wingback but alternated with
Williams at tailback. Like
Williams, Miller is lightning
quick.
Kenny Barrow was at
fullback. He’s still a tough
runner and punishing blocker.
Keith Barrow and Holmes
played most of the game at
offensive tackle.
Keith Mathis and Barry Bunn
were at guard and Victor
Perdue at center.
Bubba Andrews, who caught
Griffin’s only pass, was at
tightend.
Griffin pounded out 249 yards
on the ground. Williams
accounted for 197 yards of it.
His 75 yard touchdown run
came on the final play of the
first quarter.
The score was 7-0 at halftime.
Williams made it 13-0 with a
35 yard touchdown run in the
third.
That run was set up by Vines’
fumble recovery at the
Woodward 39.
Williams’ 60 yard burst came
with 8:29 left in the fourth.
Shortly before the TD,
Griffin’s defense was brilliant
in a goal-line stand at the 3.
The defense turned the ball

Q. I know that the 1980 Olympics are being held in Moscow.
Can you tell me where the 1984 and 1988 Olympics are going to
be held? Also, was there a World Series in 1904? If not, can you
tell me why? — John Spicer, Springfield, Mo.
I've answered the Olympic site question before. Neither
date is committed to any locale, but the genera) feeling seems
to be that Teheran will host the 'B4 Games, and four years
later they could be in Nairobi. As for the World Series,
American and National League winners first started play, on
an informal basis, in 1903, with Boston beating Pittsburgh. In
1904, the owner of the New York Giants, John T. Brush, dis
dained meeting Boston in a post-season series, so there was
none. The World Series became an official event in 1905, under
a set of rules drawn up by the National Commission, which
then governed baseball.
Q. When a golfer elects to use his putter from three or four
feet off the putting surface, is that considered to be a putt? —
Lee McClellan, Castro Valley, Calif.
Technically, it isn’t. In the golf vernacular, it’s called a Tex
as wedge. In practice, if a fellow holes out in two strokes from
that spot off the green, he’ll say he two-putted.

Davis resigns
STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) -
Kermit Davis, whose Mis
sissippi State basketball team
soared and then plummeted this
season, has resigned as head
coach after the school’s student
association voted 27-1 to request
a replacement.
Athletic Director Bob Tyler
accepted the resignation Friday
evening and said Davis would
serve as a consultant to the
athletic department for the re
mainder of his contract. Tyler
said a search for a successor
would begin immediately.
Davis, who compiled a 91-91
record in seven years as State’s
head coach, said he wished the
basketball program well.
“I’ve very much enjoyed my
stay here,” Davis said. “I wish
the team much success, and I
hope in the near future there’s a
championship for the students.”
But the resignation came
hours after an article appeared
in the student newspaper sharp
ly criticizing Davis’s coaching
performance.
Written by a member of the
student senate, Erwin Ward,
the article quoted team mem-
bers as saying the squad had
lost confidence in Davis’ lead
ership. Ward said players told
him they lacked respect for
Davis and would have voted
unanimously to replace him.
Ward also said that two play
ers from New York were con
sidering leaving the school and
returning to the Northeast. The
only New Yorkers on the roster
are sophomore forward Gary
Hooker and junior guard Al
Perry, both starters.
After the article appeared,
the student association voted to
request “serious consideration”
by Tyler of replacing Davis.
The Bulldogs raced to an 11-2
start in the 1976-77 season, in
cluding a victory over powerful
Wake Forest. But dreams of
tournament bids faded quickly
when Southeastern Conference
play began, and the team fin
ished at 14-13 overall and 6-12 in
the SEC.
Davis, 41, played on State’s
SEC championship team during
his senior year of 1959. He later
coached in the armed forces
and high school, returned to
State in 1966 as assistant coach.
