HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) -
There are three Indy winners
entered in Sunday’s Atlanta 500
stock car race — A.J. Foyt,
Johnny Rutherford and Ricky
Rudd.
Ricky Rudd?
Yes, the baby-faced Rudd, a
rookie in Grand National racing
this season, is a former Indy
winner. In 1971, he won the
World Karting Association
(that’s go-karts) title at In
dianapolis.
Rudd, from Chesapeake, Va.,
says he’s kidded about the
“Indy victory” by his friends,
but he still considers that ac
complishment the current peak
of his budding racing career.
Only 20 years old, Rudd is by
far the youngest driver on the
Grand National circuit, which is
dominated by old-timers like

Phil Gamer played third base
for the Pittsburgh Pirates Fri
day. Third base lost.
By no stretch of the imagina
tion could Gamer’s debut with
the Pirates be termed aus
picious, although they beat the
Detroit Tigers 10-6 in an exhibi
tion baseball game.
A second baseman with Oak
land until the nine-player trade
between the A’s and Pirates
earlier this week, Gamer has
been handed the third base job
by Pittsburgh Manager Chuck
Tanner, who also was his boss in
Oakland.

David Pearson and Richard
Petty, who were racing and
winning before Rudd was born.
With very little other ex
perience, Rudd went from karts
to Grand National racing—sort
of like going from high school
baseball to the Yankees.
“I’m learning,” he said. “You
know, I just jumped into Grand
National racing. My only
learning was with the karts. It
just takes awhile before you can
figure out how to do things.”
But Rudd is currently the
leader for this year’s NASCAR
Rookie of the Year title. He’s
started three races, while none
of the other rookies has been in
more than two.
He’ll make that four Sunday,
if he can get his rebuilt Chevro
let—he crashed twice at Rock
ingham last week— ! nto the
lineup during the final session of
qualifying today for the $170,000
two other grounders. There
were, however, two balls he
failed to mishandle.
The day wasn’t a total loss,
though. Gamer delivered a
double and triple in three at
bats—he’s hitting .667, fielding
.400—in the Bucs’ 15-hit attack,
which included homers by Bill
Robinson and Al Oliver.
The A’s didn’t seem to miss
Gamer. Ed Crosby and Wayne
Gross homered in the first in
ning and Oakland went on to
trounce the Chicago Cubs 17-7.
Meanwhile, Reggie Jackson
belted his first home run in a
New York uniform and Chris
Chambliss also homered and
drove in four runs, leading the
Yankees to a 10-6 victory over
the Texas Rangers.
race.
“We didn’t sleep for a couple
of days,” Rudd said of the rush
to fix the car in time for this
race. “I went into a turn too
hard at Rockingham and got
into the wall and that did some
damage. But then I got back out
on the track and was just trying
to finish the race when the
engine blew and I got into the
wall again.
“It did a lot of sheet metal
damage, enough to keep us up
for a few days. We finished
midnight Thursday and loaded
it on the truck to get here in
time today.”
Rudd says it’s a pleasure
being back at Atlanta, one of the
few tracks he ran last year.
Most every other track he goes
to is a new experience.
“People can’t tell you about
the chassis and things like that.
They can tell you, but you can’t
Fred Lynn drove in four runs
with a homer and three doubles
as the Boston Red Sox outlasted
the Philadelphia Phillies 12-8
with a 19-hit attack. Pitching
ace Luis Tiant also stormed into
the Red Sox’ camp after a three
week holdout.
Cecil Cooper, traded by Bos
ton to Milwaukee, had three
doubles, a single and three RBI
in the Brewers’ 11-7 triumph
over the Cleveland Indians.
The California Angels also
had an eight-run inning—the
second—and went on to crush
the Seattle Mariners 13-5. The
big frame included a two-run
single by Ron Jackson and a
two-run double by Tony Solaita.
Butch Wynegar and Larry
Hisle hit two-run homers and
Roy Smalley drilled a solo shot,
powering the Minnesota Twins
over the Cincinnati Reds 6-4.
Steve Yeager slugged a two
run homer and Don Suttoni
allowed one run and three hits
in five innings as the Los Ange
les Dodgers turned back the
Montreal Expos 5-3.
Johnnie LeMaster’s bases
loaded double with two out in
the bottom of the ninth lifted the
San Francisco Giants past the
San Diego Padres 10-9 and Cliff
Johnson homered in the
Houston Astros’ 7-4 victory over
the Toronto Blue Jays.
Atlanta and Baltimore split a
doubleheader. The Braves took
the opener 10-4 with Rod Gil
breath socking a three-run
homer, but the Orioles came
back to win the nightcap 9-2 by
scoring six runs in the seventh
inning, two on a homer by Eddie

Tarheel state fans eye NCAA tourney
By The Associated Press
Residents of the Tar Heel
state were watching today’s re
gional finals of the NCAA bas
ketball tournament more close
ly than most, since three
schools from North Carolina
were among the eight survivors
in action.

“Like, I didn’t know how fast
I could go until I spun out once.
After I spun, I figured I was
going faster than I ought to. The
frontrunners run on the edge all
the time. They’re used to it. It’ll
take me awhile before I can do
that.
“This is what I’m going to do

“I want to go just as fast as
the car can go. From there, it’s
just a question of learning.

that.”

Virginia
STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) —
Gerald Hynke drove in two of
Georgia Southern’s six fourth
inning runs to lead the Eagles to
a 13-2 rout of Virginia in college
baseball Friday.
Randy Childress had three of
Southern’s 15 hits and two runs
batted in during the game.
The Eagles also scored five
runs in the seventh to put the
game out of reach for the Cav
aliers.
Virginia, now 3-5, scored its
runs in the first and fourth in
nings. Georgia Southern, now
10-4, had its other runs in the
first and second innings.
Randy Hodges boosted his
record to 4-0, and went the dis
tance for Southern. Paul Voigt,
0-1, was tagged with the loss
after pitching four innings.

Atlanta next weekend was an

unranked Idaho State, 25-4,

Injuries were expected to
play a key role in the North

Kentucky’s two beefiest per

juniors Rick Robey and Mike

injuries. Only Phillips, with a
sprained right wrist, was a
questionable starter.

Wake Forest is a team which
likes to play deliberate ball, of
ten going to the four-corner of
fense made famous by Coach
Dean Smith at North Carolina.
Knowing this, Marquette
worked on speeding up its nor
mally deliberate game.
Michigan Coach Johnny Orr
was confident that if his Big Ten
champions played their game,
they would march on to Atlanta.
For UNC-Charlotte, which
has been building steadily into a
national power under Coach Lee
Rose, reaching the final eight
and a shot at Michigan was a
victory in itself.
Also finishing better than ex
pected, win or lose, is Idaho
State, which has gained respect
for itself and it’s conference, the
Big Sky.
And Nevada-Las Vegas,
which is the nation’s scoring
leader by far with an average of
108 points a game, wasn’t taking
Idaho State lightly.
