Open marriage,
a sex smorgasbord
By Abigail Van Buren
© 1977 by Chicago Tribuna-N Y Nawa Synd Inc
DEAR ABBY: You told a woman who was in love with a
married man: "Send him home to his wife and children..."
Abby, this is 1977. Why didn’t you tell her to ask her
married lover to be honest with his wife about her, and try
to develop an "open marriage” that would include the girl
friend too?
A marriage doesn't have to be exclusive to be good. Each
of us can love more than one person. Why be hypocritical?
If there were fewer “either/or" ultimatums, there would
be fewer divorces.
After 28 years of a monogamous marriage, my wife and I
decided to “open” our marriage to include others. I now en
courage and help my wife to have outside relationships
with other men, and she does the same for me with other
women. Our open marriage has revitalized us and strength
ened our marriage.
OPEN AND HAPPY
DEAR OPEN: I didn't suggest an "open marriage” be
cause I wouldn't advise anyone to do what I myself would
n't do. Marriage is (or should be) a sacred covenant be
tween two people, and to “open” it to include others is a
violation of that covenant.
It may be possible to love more than one person, but in a
civilized society, it’s one at a time. The “group” thing,
which includes many partners, is not a “love feast”—it's a
sexual smorgasbord.
CONFIDENTIAL TO YOU: For the most readable and
honest book yet published about Franklin and Eleanor
Roosevelt, get “My Parents” by James Roosevelt, their
oldest son. It's rich in political history and will give you an
intimate look at a fascinating family.
Everyone has a problem. What's yours? For a personal
reply, write to ABBY: Box No. 69700, L.A., Calif. 90069.

Tom Carson
Adds living spirit to medical home
Tom Carson feels persons in
medical homes don’t have to
resign themselves from living a
full and wholesome life.
He should know because he
has been a patient at the
Brightmoor Medical Home
since 1970.
“I came here to make this my
home and everybody has been
so nice," the 66-year-old
diabetic patient said.
And home he has made it, too,
with a guiding purpose of
helping other patients.
Come every other Friday
night Carson can be found
operating the movie projector
for the full length movies
provided for the patients.
He says he enjoys his work
and “besides it gives me
something to do.”
His helping spirit does not end
there. Every Sunday following
his attendance at St. George’s
Espicopal Church, Carson
usually will find the nearest
grocery store in order to pick up
items for other patients at the
home.
He has been a member at St.
George’s all his life and thanks
the Rev. Douglas Wynn and his
physician, Dr. Jack Landham,
for making the arrangement for
his residence at Brightmoor.
Prior to Brightmoor, Carson
lived at the Griffin Hotel.
“Rev. Wynn and Dr.
tandham felt I needed someone
to help me with my spceial diet
and someone to take care of
me” he said. Its obvious though
when one visits the home,
Carson does not require a lot of
help.
He still puts to good use his
singing voice during sing-alongs
sponsored by the women’s
groups. He said he used to sing
in the church choir.
Carson does a lot of reading.
He says the Griffin Daily News
is his favorite newspaper.
He carried the paper on his
route on East College street for
15 years. He also carried the
Atlanta Journal but quit
because he did not like Sunday
deliveries.
Carson looks forward to the
visits of the bookmobile to keep
his reading shelf filled.
One would think that reading
would head the list of hobbies
for a gentleman tucked
peacefully in the quiet
surroundings of Brightmoor.
Not so for Carson.
He loves the Metropolitan
Opera and is anxiously awaiting
his annual visit to see an opera.
Dr. Robert Flanders takes him

going to see La Boheme.
He considers watching
television a hobby and says he
puts in quite a bit of time
watching the set given to him by
the members at Saint George.
Asked what his evening
activity included on the day of
the interview, Carson explained
he was waiting for someone to
pick him up to take him to the
church supper for the
celebration of Lent.
Thomas Mills Carson, as he
supplied his complete name at
the end of the interview, is the
son of the late Dr. M.F. Marcus
Carson. Dr. Carson practiced in
Griffin. He died in 1944.
