Treadway, McGee star
for Jacksonville State
Stan Treadway of Griffin is on his way to a home run
record at Jacksonville State in Jacksonville, Ala.
The power-hitting first baseman has slugged 9 home
runs in 14 games.
The school’s single season record is 13.
Jacksonville State has 37 games left on its 51-game
schedule and barring unforeseen circumstances, the ex-
Griffin High batting star should easily establish a new
school HR mark.

By HERSCHEL NISSENSON

Al Hrabosky, the Mad Hun
garian of the St. Louis Cardi
nals’ bullpen, does not like his
mental outlook. He likes his fa
cial outlook even less.
Unhappy over an edict by
Vern Rapp, the Cards’ new
manager, that all facial hair
had to go, Hrabosky has threat
ened to file a grievance with the
Major League Baseball Players
Association.
Hrabosky’s famed Fu Man
chu mustache was one of the
casualties after Rapp an
nounced his ban on facial fo
liage. And shorn of his security
blanket, Hrabosky is con
templating an official griev
ance.
“There’s every good chance
of it real soon,” he said Sunday
as the Cardinals dropped an 8-2
exhibition game to the Cincin
nati Reds. “My mental outlook
is atrocious. There’s more dis
sension on this club than I’ve
ever seen.”
“I’m still trying to do my best
— do my job, work hard and set
an example for others,” added
Hrabosky, who has totaled 44
saves and a record of 29-10 in
the past three seasons.

duced a pair of four-run innings,
one of which included Joel
Youngblood’s two-run homer.
Hrabosky was not the only
player making waves. Center
fielder Mickey Rivers of the
New York Yankees, who failed
to suit up for the first day of
spring practice and was yanked
last week when he neglected to
run out a ground ball, got in
more trouble during a 7-3 loss to
the Philadelphia Phillies. He
played a single into a triple by
not chasing the ball during the
seventh inning and non
chalantly dropped a fly ball lat
er in the inning.
Elsewhere on the exhibition
trail, Jerry Morales drove in six
runs with two homers, a triple
and a single as the Chicago
Cubs outlasted the Seattle
Mariners 16-15 in 10 innings.
In another slugfest, Bob Go
rinski, the 1976 Pacific Coast
League home run and RBI
champ, collected four RBI with
a 450-foot homer and a triple,
powering the Minnesota Twins
over the Boston Red Sox 10-7.
Bobby Grich, sidelined with a
sore back, made his debut with
the California Angels. He
played four flawless innings in
the field and said his back felt
fine, but the Angels lost to the

bats for a .483 average.
Treadway is one of 2 ex-Griffin players now starring
with Coach Rudy Abbott’s Jacksonville Gamecocks.
Joe McGee has a 2-0 pitching record.
He was brilliant in his last outing, striking out 14 in a
game against Illinois-Benedictine. He fanned 9 of the last
12 batters.
Like Treadway, McGee has caught the eye of several
pro scouts.
The Gamecocks have a 14-0 record.
