Old Jones returns
to defeat Braves
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Al
though Randy Jones was the Cy
Young winner as the National
League’s best pitcher last year,
the wins have been few and far
between in 1977.
But the little San Diego Pad
res’ left-hander looked his old
self Wednesday night as he
pitched the Padres to an 8-6
victory over Atlanta in the first
game of a double header.
The Padres completed a
sweep when they won the sec
ond game 2-1 in 10 innings.
“I’m very pleased,” said
Jones, 5-8, after pitching five
and two-thirds innings for his
first win since May 19. “Actual
ly, I never really thought about
the win and how long it’s been
since I’ve won. The only thing
on my mind was to try and get
myself back closer to the way I
used to be.”
With that goal, Jones decided
to push the arm he submitted to
off-season surgery to the limit.
Reportedly, the arm is nearly
back to normal physically but
Jones’ worry about further
injury remains a hurdle.
“During the first four innings,
I forced myself to turn the ball
over just as I did last year,”
said the sinkerball specialist,

“and everything clicked. I had a
good sinker, the best I’ve had in
a long time.”
Os the 12 outs recorded during
those four innings, Jones got 11
of them on infield grounders.
That was his trademark last
season when he won 22 games
for the Padres and the year
before when he won 20.
His arm stiffened in the fifth
inning, though he set the Braves
down in order. In the sixth, he
gave up four hits, including a
two-run homer to Jeff
Burroughs, and departed with a
4-3 lead.
Jones thought he was fully
recovered at the start of this
year, but got spasms in his left
biceps about six weeks into the
season. The diagnosis was that
his muscle simply needed build
ing up. He has been on a re
habilitation program since,
spending three weeks on the
disabled list when he was not
allowed to throw at all.
“This outing was very en
couraging,” said Padre Man
ager Alvin Dark. “Randy just
has to pitch and pitch and pitch
to build up his arm so he’ll be
able to return in top shape next
season.”

Only thing ordinary

Fenway Park will emerge as
the winner.
‘ ‘When the wind is blowing out
like tonight, you see some crazy
things happen here,” Boston
Manager Don Zimmer said
Wednesday night.
The only thing which didn’t
seem out of the ordinary in the
Red Sox’ 11-10 victory over the
California Angels was Boston’s
victory. It was the Red Sox’ 11th
straight win, the longest in the
American League this season,
and extended Boston’s longest
winning streak since 1950.
The game, which had been
billed as a pitching duel be
tween California southpaw
Frank Tanana and Boston ace
Louis Tiant, was anything but
that.
Both pitchers had entered the
game without surrendering a
run in their last 16 innings of
work, but both were hit hard.
Tanana gave up five runs in as
many innings, while Tiant was
battered for six runs on 10 hits
in five innings plus.

Tech loses
Bessillieu
for 2 games
ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia
Tech hasn’t even begun its foot
ball season, and already the
Yellow Jackets’ starting free
safety, Don Bessillieu, is side
lined for the first two games of
the year.
Bessillieu underwent knee
surgery this week and will be
sidelined for at least six weeks,
missing the team’s fall practice
and games against South Caro
lina and Miami, Coach Pepper
Rodgers said Wednesday.
Rodgers had been counting on
the 193-pound junior from
Kendrick High School in Colum
bus, Ga., to beef up what al
ready was one of Tech’s weak
points.
“Our defense was already
suspect, and now with Don out,
it’s even more suspect,” Rod
gers said. “He could do so many
things well and we were
counting on him at free safety to
be one of our leaders on de
fense.”
Bessillieu returned 23 punts
for 205 yards last season, inter
cepted two passes, recovered
three fumbles and made 80
tackles.
