Code names
President Carter is ‘Deacon ’ Ford was
‘Pass Key/ Nixon was ‘Searchlight’
WASHINGTON (AP) - Listen, this
isn’t the type of information the
government wants passed around.
But President Carter is the
“Deacon.” Former President Ford was
“Pass Key.” Richard Nixon was known
as “Searchlight.”
Lyndon Johnson went through life as
president known as “Volunteer," and
John F. Kennedy was tagged “Lan
cer.”
It’s all part of the Secret Service
name game, used to identify the First
Family and top administration officials
as their comings and goings are noted
in walkie-talkie jargon.
The people who make up these
names, employes of the White House
Communications Agency, are reticent
to talk about them, since they are de
signed for security.
But one spokesman will go this far:
Bert Lance, the big man who serves the
President as budget director, is not
known as “Dumbo,” regardless of
published reports to the contrary.
He was referring to a recent
newspaper story citing a radio ex
change between agents as Lance and
Carter prepared for a game of tennis at
the White House that “Deacon and
Dumbo are on the courts.”
“Dumbo isn’t even on the list," said
the spokesman, not amused.
“The list," is actually a book of call
signs put out by the Military Com
munications Electronics Board of the
Department of Defense. It contains

Who christened Carter “Deacon?”
Do WHCA personnel agonize like
nervous parents of a newborn child for
a name that will fit the personality?
Code names are assigned by “sheer
whim,” said the WHCA spokesman,
who declined to provide his own name.
“There is no method. When someone
needs a name we go to the list and
choose one that is easy to pronounce
and decipherable and has not been used
recently.”
“Really, not too much thought goes
into the naming,” he said. “Words are
chosen to keep transmissions short and
sweet and be easily identified over the
radio circuit.”
But some aliases seem more apt than
others. Kennedy’s “Lancer” certainly
fits the Camelot theme of his adminis
tration. “Deacon” for Carter, the
Sunday school preacher, sounded too
perfect to have evolved randomly.
“It was all a matter of chance,” the
spokesman insisted.
One thing is for sure, the WHCA
spokesman said. When a call sign gets
too publicized, it’s time for a name
change, especially where the president
is concerned.
If not Deacon, what title will be
selected next by sheer whim?

Clean-up operations under way today
No injuries
in train wreck
COMER, Ga. (AP) — Cleanup
operations continued today at
the site of a derailment which
touched off a crash between
railroad freight cars loaded
with artillery ammunition and
others carrying caustic soda.
Authorities said residents
within a one-mile radius of the
derailment were temporarily
evacuated Wednesday night
after 21 cars on a Seaboard
Coast Line Railroad train
jumped the track, but later
were allowed to return home.
No injuries were reported in the
crash, which dumped cars into
a creek about 15 miles east of
Athens.
Roads to the area were
blocked and authorities said
they did not expect to have the
wreckage cleared before this
afternoon.
Authorities said the four-en

Trudeau reconciliation?
OTTAWA, Canada (AP) — Prime Minister Pierre
Elliott Trudeau and his estranged wife, Margaret,
reportedly may reconcile.
The Citizen newspaper said Wednesday that one of Mrs.
Trudeau’s friends reported the prime minister’s wife was
seeking to have the separation agreement canceled.
The friend said Mrs. Trudeau was spending more time
with the couple’s three children and seemed to have lost
some of her enthusiasm for a photographic career.
The Citizen said Mrs. Trudeau was known to have spent
much of July and early August with her husband and
children at the prime minister’s summer residence at
nearby Harrington Lake.
She rented a New York apartment after the separation.
Later, she was reported to have taken an apartment near
the prime minister’s official residence in Ottawa.
Bing Crosby is back
CONCORD, Calif. (AP) — The figure on the stage was
familiar. And the song was, too.
“I’m dreaming of a White Christmas," sang 73-year-old
Bing Crosby in his first stage appearance in five months
following a fall from a stage in Pasadena.
“It feels good, it feels right, to be a part of the scene,”
was Crosby’s opening number. He looked a little stiff, but
he joked about the fall in March that left him hospitalized
three weeks with a ruptured spinal disc.
The fall came as the celebrated crooner was taping a
television show commemorating his 50 years in show
business.
Crosby, who shared the stage with guitar-playing son
Harry and daughter Mary Frances, who danced, gave a
full-length concert at the Concord Pavilion that was in
terrupted 25 minutes by microphone failure.
Crosby had called the one-night Concord show a “trial
run” before a tour that will take him and his family to
Norway, Sweden and England.
Renee Richards will play
NEW YORK (AP) — Dr. Renee Richards, a 43-year-old
transsexual, will be allowed to play in the U.S. Open tennis
tournament at Forest Hills.
The United States Tennis Association agreed Wed
nesday to accept her as an entrant in the championships
for women’s singles.
