Penrose to start for Broncos
against Falcons Saturday night
ATLANTA (AP) - Craig
Penrose, the second-year quar
terback from San Diego State,
has been given the starting nod
for Denver Saturday night when
the unbeaten Broncos seek their
third straight preseason victory
against the Atlanta Falcons.
Denver, which already has
defeated playoff contenders
Baltimore and St. Louis, will be
favored to dispose of the re
building Falcons in the 7 p.m.
EDT National Football League
battle.
However, the Broncos lost
both of the previous exhibition
engagements with Atlanta and
own only one triumph in a trio of
regular season games.
Coach Leeman Bennett of the
Falcons will stick to his plan of
giving each of his quarterbacks
a start, going this time with
Kim McQuilken and following in
the second half with his No. 1
quarterback, Steve Bartkowski.
Veteran Craig Morton is
scheduled to divide playing
time with Penrose.

Flames schedule home
games for Saturdays
ATLANTA (AP) — Saturday
night will be the most popular
time for the Atlanta Flames to
play home games this season.
The National Hockey League
team announced its 1977-78
home schedule Thursday, and
President Bob Kent said the
club will play 15 of its 40 games
at the Omni on Saturday nights.
He said fans have been re
questing more Saturday night
games since the Flames came
to Atlanta.
“We still have to play the
unit, particularly on offense,
and the experience of winning
together,” he said.
Bennett will move No. 1 draft
choice Warren Bryant into a
starting tackle berth to replace
find his way into the starting
lineup sometime this season.

same teams as everyone else,”
Kent said. “But we’ve estab
lished Saturday night as the
important home game night,
along with Wednesday for mid
week.”
In the past, many Atlanta
home games were played on
Friday nights, but the new
schedule calls for only five Fri
day night matches. Twelve
games are to be played on
Wednesdays, five on Thurs
days, and three on Tuesdays.
Half the team’s home games
will be on weekends, with the St.
Louis Blues supplying the op
position in the home opener on
Saturday, Oct. 15. The home
schedule will close Saturday,
April 8, against the Phila
delphia Flyers.
Atlanta will play each NHL
team at least twice at the Omni.
Patrick Division rivals — the
New York Rangers, the New
York Islanders and Phila
delphia — will each appear
three times in Atlanta. Also vis

knee surgery that left his return
this season “questionable,”
according to a Falcons
spokesman.
The spokesman said doctors
repaired ligaments and re
moved cartilage from the six
year veteran’s knee during the
operation in Atlanta.
As a result, Bryant will start
in place of Gotshalk in Satur
day’s pre-season game against
the Broncos in Atlanta, Coach
Leeman Bennett said Thursday.
Although Bryant may fulfill
the coaches’ high expectations
for him at tackle, Gotshalk’s in
jury weakens the over-all
strength of the offensive line.
Bennett had planned to move
Gotshalk to right guard when
Bryant appeared ready to start
at tackle. Now, that position
probably will go to either Roy
Smith or Greg Kindle.
Following Thursday’s light
workout, Bennett said he will
start four-year veteran Kim
McQuilken at quarterback and
leave him in for at least the first
half.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - The

The remainder will determine

136-57 in World Games
SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) - “We
didn’t try to run up the score,”
United States basketball Coach
Denny Crum insisted after the
Americans routed Belgium 136-
57 at the World University
Games Thursday night.
But Crum likely was to have
even more trouble holding down
the winning margin when his
collection of college allstars
played Kuwait today in the
second round.
Poland overwhelmed the
Arab team 136-20 in the opening
round earlier Thursday, and the
taller and better-shooting
Americans could hardly fail to
match Poland’s performance.
“I just hope we’re awake (the
game was at 9 a.m.),” the 40-
year-old University of Louis
ville coach said with a smile,
when asked for a prediction.
Guard Darrell Griffith of
Louisville scored 20 points and
Freeman Williams of Portland
State had 18 as the Americans
overwhelmed the Belgians with
their fast break, board control
and a dazzling display of shoot
ing that earned roars of ap
proval from the 1,000 fans at
Sofia University Hall.
Four other Americans were in
double figures. Starting for-
wards Phil Hubbard of Mich
igan scored 17 and Larry Byrd
of Indiana State had 15. Guard
Sid Moncrief of Arkansas added
16 and forward Walter Jordan of
Purdue had 11.
“For the first time, we played
realiy well together,” Crum
said. “There must have been 60
assists as players unselfishly
passed the ball to the man in the
open.”
The Americans will face their
first tough game Sunday when
they play Poland. Thirty-one
teams are competing in the
