New team
(Continued from page 1)
companied to Georgia for a few days
vacation. Upon returning to Toronto,
they said they both knew in their hearts
Georgia was where they wanted to live.
“We fell in love with it right away,”
Mrs. Traviss said.
They moved to Atlanta and the major
was made an envoy to the corps home
in Athens while he trained in Atlanta.
Since, they have had tours of duty in
Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland,
Alabama and Arkansas.
“We picked up a little in each place,”
Major Vivian Traviss said.
The Traviss’ have a foster son,
Captain Larry Revass, who is stationed
in Montevideo, Uraguay as a Salvation
Army missionary. He has been there
for some 9 years.
Captain Revass has also given ser
vice to the Griffin Corps home. He was
stationed here for a few months some
years ago.
The Travisses believe they are doing
a vialble work with reference to both
the spiritual and physical growth of
those with whom they come in contact.
They feel the physical needs of their
clients must be met before they can
effectively deal with the spiritual.
“If a man is hungry, you can’t talk to
him about his soul,” Major Traviss
said.
“We feel meeting his physical need is
a necessary part of the total work of
salvation,” he continued.
Mrs. Traviss agreed and added the
spiritual aspect of a client is, however,
extremely important.
The Traviss’ said the work they are
doing is primarily the same as was
intended by the founder of the Salvation
Army, William Booth.
In Griffin, the Traviss’ plan to direct
a ladies home group which will address
itself to worship, service, education,
and fellowship. Persons desiring to
participate in the ladies’ activities do
not necessarily have to be Salvation
Army converts or soldiers.
The Guard and Sunbeam is a scout
like organization for girls. It, too, will
be open to the public.
There are 7 members of the corps
cadets at the Griffin mission. At least
two have expressed a desire to go into
Salvation Army work.
Milton Califf plans to go into
Salvation Army service. A 16-year-old,
Terry Buck, is thinking seriously about
dedicating his life to the Army.
The mission here will also sponsor a
summer camping program.
Regular church services as well as
Sunday School are held in the mission
sanctuary.
The morning services are directed
toward teaching the soldiers to walk
closer to the Lord.
The evening services primarily are
directed toward converting sinners.
A 30-day waiting period is required
before a new convert is accepted as a
soldier.
The Traviss’ are happy they have
come to Griffin. Their ongoing
assistance in providing for the physical
and spiritual wellbeing of people
requires their kind of dedication.

Griffin police are in
vestigating several thefts and
burglaries.

Pike busses operating smoothly
The Pike County School system had one of its best
openings ever last month and a major part of the success
was in transportation.
Speaking of busing students to and from school, Jim
Crayton said, “It was very smooth. In fact it’s hard for me
to believe how well it’s running.”
Crayton, who is in charge of transportation assured the

Henry
Henry full of confused tax payers
Some property owners in Henry County are confused
about their county tax notices. As the result of a hike in the
county’s millage rate last week, county tax officials
mailed tax bills based on the original millage as the first
part of each person’s total bill. The second set of bills will
be mailed later to account for the millage increase.
The confusion came when a computer used to prepare
the bills failed to put the words ‘first payment’ on about
5,000 of the first bills.
Ex-jailer accused of pocketing fines
A former Henry County jailor is free on $6,000 bond after

custody after Stockbridge police found 24 traffic citations
and a receipt book belonging to the Henry County
