Griffin - Newton
Bears suffer
first loss
Griffin's domination of
Newton County is over.
It ended Friday night in
Covington when the Rams
defeated the Bears, 3-0.
Newton’s first-time-ever
victory over Griffin was a
major unset.
The Rams were 0-2 going into
the game. Griffin was 2-0 and
rated anywhere from Number
One to Number Four in prep
polls.
There were no excuses
coming out of the Griffin camp.
“They just flat whipped us,”
Coach Max Dowis said. ‘ That’s
the extent of it. Newton was a
well coached and well prepared
team. They really came at us
and you have to give them
credit. They were an aggressive
team. We didn’t accept the
challenge.”
Coach Dowis didn’t blame the
loss on weather conditions.
“It was wet on both sides of
the field so we have no com
plaints at all about the rain.
“Weather is part of the game
and it will be as long as games
are played out of doors. The
best team will handle the
weather conditions and we just
didn't handle it,” the Griffin
coach said.
Coach Dowis said Griffin’s
offense did not play with much
intensity.
“We must get that
straightened out right away. We
will not challenge anybody until
we do,” the Griffin coach said.
Coach Dowis agreed that
Griffin’s defense played well.
“You just don’t give a team
that many chances and expect
to survive,” he said.
Newton had a least a half
dozen scoring opportunities.
Griffin’s defense turned back
all except a 24 yard field goal
with 6:28 left in the fourth
quarter.
“I thought we got fired up a
couple of times. But things
happened, such as fumbles, to
stop us.”
"Actually the key to the game
was field position. They took it
and kept it.”
“Every time it looked as if we
would get room to operate we
would lose field position again,”
Coach Dowis said.
Griffin didn’t waste any time
going to work in an attempt to

A practice was scheduled
today.
“It won’t be a hard practice,”
Coach Dowis said. “We’ll work

situation.”

Griffin couldn’t move. It was
apparent on the first series that
Newton had loaded up to stop
Griffin’s ground attack.
Three snaps produced 5 yards
and Charles Steele punted.
The kick was returned to the
Griffin 45 and the Rams
promptly drove to 20 where they
had a first and 10.
Griffin’s defense showed it
came to play. Two running
plays gained 4 yards to the 16.
Cornerback J. C. Davis hit
Kenneth Stokes for a 4 yard loss
on third down and linebacker
Jeff Jackson hit quarterback
Wes Bowers for a 4 yard loss on
fourth down.
Late in the first quarter the
defense turned the ball over to
the offense when Tommy Joe
Coleman intercepted a pass and
returned it to the Newton 40.
Griffin was hit with a 15 yard
penalty and that mild threat
ended.
Steele’s punt was blocked and
Newton had possession at the
Griffin 39.
Griffin’s defense went to
work. Three snaps cost Newton
2 yards and the Rams punted
again.
Coach Dowis hoped Griffin
could get field position early in
the third.
It didn’t happen.
After taking the kick off,
Newton drove to the Griffin 17.
A 35 yard pass from Bowers to
Mike Nolley put the Rams in
scoring position at the Griffin
25. Stokes picked up 8 to the 17.
Griffin’s defense killed the
drive right there.
The Bears’ offense
momentarily came alive.
Russell Miller got Griffin out
of a hole with a 14 yard run.
Griffin fumbled on the following
play and Newton recovered at
the 32.

in trouble again when a snap
slipped through Charles Steele’s
hands. Griffin lost 17 yards on
the play and Newton was in
possession at the 19.
Newton picked up a first down
to the 5. Griffin was penalized to
the 3.
Griffin’s defense threw up a
stone wall and shoved Newton
back to the 19.
Early in the fourth Newton
started a drive at the Griffin 43.
It carried to the 7 where
sophomore Billy Gunter kicked
a 24 yard field goal. Newton had
a 3-0 lead with 6:28 left in the
game.
Tailback Ricky Williams
returned the kick off to the
Griffin 30.
Griffin fumbled on the first
play from scrimmage and
Newton recovered.
Two plays later Newton
fumbled.
Defensive end Chuck Scott
picked up the loose ball and
raced 79 yards to the Newton
end zone.
The play was called back.
Officials ruled the ball was dead
and, in addition, penalized
Griffin 11 yards for a dead ball
foul, piling on.
Newton drove to the Griffin 2
before running out of downs.
Griffin came out throwing.
Quarterback Jeff Ector hit
Williams with a 12 yarder.
Ector and Williams clicked
again on a 34 yarder to the
Griffin 48.
A running play and 3 more
passes went astray and Newton
took over on downs.
Griffin had one more chance
but it ended with an interception
with 11 seconds to go.
Linebacker Bobby Willis led
Griffin’s defensive effort with a
pass interception and 14
tackles. Kent Head made 8
tackles, Chuck Scott had 7, Jeff
Jackson 6, and Freddy Gilbert
and Eric Jackson 5 each.
End Cyrus Jackson played a
sound game. Fullback Kenny
Barrow joined the defense a
couple of times and helped
stymie Newton threats.
Newton completed only 2 of 9
passes and had 2 intercepted.
Williams was Griffin’s
leading ground gainer with 35
yards on 10 carries. Miller
made 32 on 11 runs and Barrow
had 23 on 10.
