Discounts offered the elderly
By LOUISE COOK
Associated Press Writer
Millions of senior citizens are learning that it sometimes
pays to grow older.
They are taking advantage of discount programs of
fering older Americans up to 50 per cent off on products
and services.
The programs, most of which were begun in late 1975 or
early 1976, are spreading across the country. They vary in
organization and eligibility requirements, but they all
have the same goal: to help senior citizens, particularly
those on fixed incomes, save money.
One of the most ambitious efforts is Ohio’s “Golden
Buckeye Card.” Joe Gall of the Ohio Commission on
Aging aid it is the only statewide program in the country.
The Golden Buckeye plan started in March 1976. Ohio
residents 65 and over can apply for a card at any one of
about 1,500 locations. Holders of the cards are then en
titled to discounts on everything from auto repairs to
groceries at participating merchants.
As of the beginning of September, Gall said, 517,465 per
sons had applied for cards and 17,178 merchants were
participating. He said the state had started a campaign to
reach shut-ins and others who normally would not hear
about the program through organized senior citizens clubs
or activities.
A nationwide discount program is available through the

Not ducky
SEATTLE (AP) - Bob Holt
says he was just walking along
when a stranger ran up, yanked
off the duck head he was
wearing and hit him with it.
Holt, 20, promotion manager
for a radio station, tours rock
concerts, high school football
games and downtown streets
dressed as a 7-foot-tall duck
with a wingspan of BMs feet.
Holt told police he was walk
ing downtown, when, for no ap
parent reason, a 200-pound man
wearing an English driving hat
spun him around by his left
wing, pulled off the duck’s head
based group with 10.8 million members. Anyone 55 or over
can join the group — you don’t necessarily have to be
retired. Members pay a |3 annual fee and receive
discounts at nine national hotel and motel chains and two
rent-a-car companies, Hertz and Avis. They also can take
advantage of a pharmacy service providing home deliv
ery of prescription drugs and medical items at low cost.
Information is available from the association at 1909 K.
St., Washington, D.C., 20049. (The association, in con
junction with the National Retired Teachers Association,
also published a comprehensive “Retirement Information
Guide,” available from Fulfillment Section, NRTA

The federal government has many programs to help the
elderly. They range from well-known, widespread plans
like Social Security to more limited things like the Golden
Age Passport, which entitles holders to free admission to
national parks, monuments and recreation areas.
Information on the programs is available from federal
departments involved, but individuals may find it easier
to contact state or local agencies. A list of state agencies is
available from the Administration on the Aging,
Washington, D.I. 20201.
A list of some federal aids in the areas of jobs, food,
medical services and income supplements is included in a
fact sheet from the Department of Health, Education and
Welfare. For a free copy, write to Consumer Information

‘Sweet Pie’
DANIELSON, Conn. (AP) -
“Sweet Pie,” a local entertainer
who sings off-color ballads
while wearing a G-string, ap
parently hit a sour note with
some of his audience. They had
him arrested.
“Sweet Pie,” whose real
name is Paul A. Weiner, was
charged with breaching the
peace over the weekend after he
jumped off the stage and di
rected some of his lewd lyrics at
a table of patrons at AL’s 11,
Trooper Donald Chandler said.
The patrons felt harassed and
called police, who said they
stopped “Sweet Pie's” act,
made him change clothes and
booked him.
Weiner, 33, of Andover Mass.,
was then released. He put his G
sting back on and finished his
act “the proper way ... on a
stage,” Chandler said.
Trail of Tears
In the winter of 1838-39, the
Creek and Cherokee Indians
who lived in Georgia were
forced to move beyond the Mis
sissippi, so that settlers could
cultivate the land. During that
trek westward, nearly one out
of four died, leaving behind
what came to be known as the
Cherokee Trail of Tears.

Griffin’s
system
Alvin Waller who heads the
city’s sanitary department has
received a letter from York
County, S. C. officials telling
him that they were so im
pressed with Griffin’s garbage
transfer system, they have
decided to use it in their own
county.
York Councilmen Caldwell
Barron and Jerry Williams,
County Manager Gene Kleigh
and Bill Amick, a company
representative, came to Griffin
to study the system. Griffin’s
was one of several stops and the
councilmen liked it best.
The system uses large
trailers, instead of garbage
trucks, to haul trash to the land
fill 9 miles out in the county. The
trailers can hold 4 truck loads
and Waller estimates the city
saves about 180 miles of travel
per day.

Daniel Schorr
NEW YORK (AP) — Daniel Schorr claims his former
boss at CBS cooperated with the CIA.
Schorr has written a book in which he says board
chairman William Paley was on “a very personal basis”
with the spy agency.
• Schorr left the network after the release of sensitive
information to a newspaper. Now he’s telling all in a book
called “Clearing the Air,” excerpted by New York
magazine.
Among the incidents cited by Schorr was one in which
Paley supposedly let the CIA use the CBS booth
overlooking the United Nations Security Council so a lip
reading expert could spy on the Soviet delegation.
CBS spokesmen were unavailable for comment on the
article but have said after similar allegations were
published in the past that CBS, along with most other news
organizations, provided information through’ debriefings
and other assistance to the CIA during the cold war of the
1950 s but has had no recent dealings with the CIA.
Helen Reddy
HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — Singer Helen Reddy has
incurred the wrath of Kansas State Fair officials.
They’ve asked the Kansas attorney general to sue her
for canceling an appearance last Friday.
The fair’s board of managers announced its intention
over the weekend after deciding that Ms. Reddy did not
have a sore throat nor had she been in the hospital. Those
were the reasons they had been given for her cancellation.
A spokesman for the Las Vegas hotel where she was
performing last week said she completed a two-week
engagement Thursday night without missing a show.
Richard Talmadge
TOKYO (AP) — A mentally disturbed Chinese man
stabbed New York lawyer Richard Talmadge as he, actor
William Holden, actress Stephanie Powers and
Taknadge’s wife were returning to their hotel in Peking
Sunday, Holden reported by telephone.
Talmadge, 33, was stabbed in the chest and arm, but his
wounds were not serious, his wife reported. She said he
was hospitalized for observation, and she expected him to
be released today or Tuesday.
The assailant was arrested, the Italian news agency
ANSA reported. Death is the maximum penalty for an
attack on a foreigner in China.
“This was a minor incident and could happen in any
city,” said Holden.
Frank Fontaine
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Comedian Frank Fontaine
was in “very critical” condition in a Columbus hospital
coronary care unit after becoming ill at Port Columbus
International Airport.
“He is in extremely bad shape,” a hospital spokes
woman said early today.
Fontaine, 57, of Winchester, Mass., was unconscious,
and his relatives were on the way to Columbus, she said.
“We’re not sure that he has had a heart attack,” the
spokeswoman said, although doctors were not ruling out
the possibility.
Fontaine, known for his portrayal of the intoxicated
Crazy Guggenheim on the old Jackie Gleason television
show, completed a three-night performance at the San
dalwood Inn in Columbus on Saturday.
