2 teams couldn’t decide a winner in double-overtime.
The early upsets prove the point region coaches agreed
on in pre-season. . . the league is balanced from top to
bottom.
The season is only 3 weeks old and only one team doesn’t
know the taste of defeat.
Newnan is 6-AAA’s only unbeaten team. The 9 others
have lost one or more.
Newnan and North Clayton are the front-runners in 6-
AAA competition with 24) records.
Griffin, R. E. Lee, Forest Park, Jonesboro, Newton and
LaGrange are 1-1.
Morrow and Rockdale are 0-2.
Newton’s 3-0 victory over Griffin was the biggest upset
in 6-AAA and maybe the entire state.
Griffin went into the game rated Number One or
Number Four, depending on the poll. Newton was 0-2.
A 24 yard field goal with 6:28 left in the fourth quarter
did in the Bears.
LaGrange’s 25-7 victory over R. E. Lee was a surprise.
Lee was unbeaten and rated Number Seven in the AP
poll.
Newnan’s 8-7 victory over Forest Park wasn’t con
sidered an upset.
Most observers felt it would be a close game. Not only
was it close, the 2 strong teams played 2 overtime periods
without settling a thing.
Newnan finally was awarded an 8-7 victory on
penetration.
In other games last weekend, Jonesboro defeated
Morrow 44-13 and North Clayton stopped Rockdale, 204).
This week’s schedule doesn’t get any easier for Griffin
and Lee.
The Bears catch LaGrange coming off a big win over
Lee and the Rebels must entertain Forest Park.
In other games, Rockdale plays at Morrow and
Jonesboro invades Newnan.
Newton and North Clayton tangle in a Saturday game at
Tara Stadium.

Laney claims
Macon title
By BARBARA WASHINGTON
AP Prep Editor
Although Laney Coach David Dupree and his Wildcats
have yet to wrap up Georgia’s region 4AAA, the Augusta
team already has one title for the season: champion of
Macon high school football.
The Wildcats claimed to have won that unofficial title
Saturday night when they shut out Northeast 8-0 after a
touchdown by quarterback James Wilson and a two-point
conversion by Larry Givens.
Earlier in the season, Laney, now 3-0 for the year, also
beat Southwest and Central, Macon’s two other Class AAA
teams.
The victory Saturday night was set up by a pass inter
ception by Tyrone Davis, who returned the ball to the
Laney 43. Wilson passed to tight end William Banks, who
made it to the one-yard line, where Wilson then bulled
over for the score.

Peterson gained 101 yards and Mitchell scored on a two

)lay more is because we didn’t have them dressed out,”
said Richmond Coach Paul Inglett, pleased with his sixth
ranked Class AAA team’s third victory of the season.
Mark O’Neal led all rushers with 158 yards on 16 carries,
including touchdown runs of 75 and two yards. Quar

Defeats Forest Park
Bass says Bears
are team to beat
Coach Max Bass of Newnan
says he is glad his team won its
game with Forest Park
Saturday night but that Griffin
is still the team to beat in 6AAA.
Newnan was given an 8-7
victory over Forest Park on
penetration after the two teams
failed to decide the game in
double overtime.
“We’re glad to win, but
Forest Park has a tough
defense. They’re not so tough on
offense, though,” Bass said.
Bass who is considered the
most colorful coach in 6AAA
and probably in the state said
Newton County’s 3-0 victory
over Griffin was “a fluke, just
like Clemson beating Georgia
Saturday afternoon.”
“We have got some growing
up to do and I think this has
been some of the problem at
Griffin. There was a couple of
times we could have scored, but
we missed a few blocks and
made a few mistakes,” Bass
said.
“We have as good a backs as
there is anywhere in the state,”
he said.
Bass said this will probably
be a year when there will not be
an undefeated team in 6AAA “I
believe it will be possible for a
team to lose a couple of games
and still be in file running.
There is a lot of balance in our
region.... and there is a lot of

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The

But it won’t be at home.

Willie McCovey’s ninth inning

couldn’t beat the Braves.
They almost did it in the ninth
inning with two outs when
shortstop Bill Russell slammed
a drive down the left field line
with runners on first and sec

the stands for a ground rule
double, which meant only one
run could score and Davey
Lopes from first had to stop at
third. Reggie Smith was in
tentionally walked and then Ron
Cey flied to center ending the
game.
“It’s too bad that ball bounced
into the stands,” said rookie
Manager Tommy Lasorda.
“Otherwise we’d have had two
runs. The good Lord doesn’t
want us to win at home. He
wants us to win on the road. It’s
a shame we couldn’t win before
our home fans.”
A crowd of 32,209 saw Cey,
Steve Garvey, Dusty Baker and
Reggie Smith all hit homers.
Those blasts went for naught
because relief pitcher Dave
