Major Hoople favors
Bears over Grangers

Egads, sports fans.
The Major crawled out on a
limb last week and some culprit
sawed it off.
Yours truly, the greatest
football prognosticator,
predicted Griffin would defeat
Newton County, 35-7.
I hate to admit it, but Newton
upset Griffin, 3-0.
The difference in my
prediction and the final out
come can be explained, haff
gaff.
It rained. Boy, did it rain.
Normally I do my own
weather forecast. However, last
Friday the Great One depended
on the U. S. Weather Service.
No where did it predict rain
for Covington, Ga. so I assumed
the game would be played on a
dry field.
It wasn’t.

Lucchesi files suit
ORLANDO, Fla. — Former manager Frank Lucchesi of
the Texas Rangers filed a civil damage against Lenny
Randle, the baseball player who punched him in an
exhibition game in March.
James E. Shepherd, Lucchesi’s Orlando attorney, filed
the suit in circuit court and said that papers would be
served on Randle by the sheriff in New York, where the
infielder plays for the New York Mets.
Lucchesi will reportedly seek $200,000 in damages.
Last year’s magic turns
into spell for Koosman
By HERSCHEL NISSENSON
AP Sports Writer
Twenty is the magic number
for a pitcher but last year’s
magic has turned into this
year's evil spell for Jerry Koos
man.
A year ago, Koosman was
runner-up to San Diego’s Randy
Jones for the 1976 National
League Cy Young Award with a
1-10 record. But Wednesday
night, he lost for the 20th time
against only eight victories as
the New York Mets were
blanked by the Pittsburgh Pi
rates 4-0, Bruce Kison and Rich
Gossage combining on a five
hitter.
“I don’t believe I’m a 20-game
loser. If I did I would retire,”
said the 34-year-old lefthander.
“I will win 20 games next year, I
promise you.”
The last time a pitcher won 20
games in a season and then
turned around and lost 20 the
following year in the National
League was in 1973 when Phila
delphia’s Steve Carlton was 13-
20 after winning the Cy Young in
1972 with a 27-10 record.
Koosman matched shutout in
nings with Kison until the sixth
when Frank Taveras singled,
stole second and third and
scored on a single by Fernando
Gonzalez. Omar Moreno scored
all the way from first on a single
by Kison in the seventh and Bill
Robinson doubled a run home in
the eighth and then scored on a
single by Ken Macha.

some spots along the sideline
and the field itself was
saturated.
Griffin cheerleaders spread
hay around. That didn’t keep
them from getting soaked,
hummph.
The first half was played in a
steady rain. That my friends
washed away my prediction.
The Major and the Griffin
Bears were victims of cir
cumstances beyond our control.
Elsewhere, the Chicago Cubs

Phillies 2-0, the San Francisco

Cubs 2, Phillies 0
Ray Burris and Bruce Sutter
combined on a seven-hitter as
the Cubs slowed the Phillies’
pennant push. The Phils’ lead in
the NL East was sliced to seven
games over the Pirates and
their magic number remained
at four.
Giants 5, Dodgers 4

Because of that, we’re not
counting the miss against our
record, hee-hee.
So, with a clean slate, we
launch into this week’s
prediction.
The angry Bears play host to
the LaGrange Grangers Friday
night at Memorial Stadium.
Not only are the Bears bent on
recovering from last week’s
upset, Griffin remembers what
the Grangers did to them a year
ago.
For those, who are forgetful,
LaGrange beat Griffin, 24-14.
LaGrange scored on a 4th and
10,24 yard pass and on a 4th and
20, 70 yard pass.

Griffin is prepared for an air
raid.
The Mighty Bears have
recovered from the upset in
Covington.
I spied on Griffin a couple of
times this week from my
vantage point high in an oak
tree at the south end of
Memorial Stadium.
(The Major wasn’t perched on
his favorite limb. That’s the one
that was sawed off last week.)
Five tough Bears
from what he considers an off
year as the $150,000 Ohio Kings
Island Open got underway
today.
Making his last tour appear
ance of the year, Nicklaus needs
a victory to overtake Tom
Watson as the pro tour’s leading
money winner.
It would salvage what Nick
laus calls “a disappointing
year.”
The long-reigning king of golf
has gone two years without
winning a major championship.
“Anytime I don’t win a major
championship I consider it an
off-year,” he said. “It was a
disappointing year from the
standpoint that when I had the
opportunity to win, I didn’t. In
three of the major tournaments,
I was tied for the lead with two
holes to play.”
Nicklaus, $16,000 shy of his
first $300,000 season in four
years, trails Watson by $21,000
in pro tour winnings. Watson,
who is not entered, will have a
couple of opportunities left to
finish No. 1 in earnings.
Griffin’s offense has a new
look. We can’t divulge any
details. Fans will enjoy the
change.
The Griffin defense, which
has allowed only 1 TD, is more
defensive than ever.
The prediction here is that
Griffin’s pass rush and ex
cellent coverage will ground the
Grangers’ air attack.
Meanwhile, Griffin’s
rejuvenated offense, will
produce enough points for great
victory.
The crystal ball and slide rule
agree that Griffin will win.
The final score will be Griffin
21 and LaGrange 14.

a senior linebacker. The Bean will be attempting to
rebound from a 3-0 loss last week to Newton County. Game

Nicklaus joins 16 others tour
winners of 1977 to give the
young tournament its best field
ever. First prize of $30,000
would vault Nicklaus past Wat
son and give him the money title
for the sixth time in seven
years. He has reached the
$300,000 total only twice in his
career.
Winless since the Muirfield
tournament in late May, Nick
laus said a twisted ankle in mid-
June may have contributed to
his troubles.

Pirates *fired up 9

The Pike County Pirates will
be looking to even their season
record at 2-2 Friday night when
they invade Lamar County, but
the going may be tough for the
Pike Countians.
Lamar County will be on the
rebound from a loss last week to
Taylor County.
Pike will be seeking its second
victory of the season after
posting a 13-0 victory over Tri-
County last week in Zebulon.
“Our boys are all fired up and

if we are to be victorious over
Lamar County," Pike County
Coach Bobby Floyd said.
Floyd said defense was the
key to the victory over Tri-
County and it will be the key in
stopping the powerful Lamar
County team.
Last week the Pike County
tightend somewhat from the
first two games of the season
and forced Tri-County to punt 9
times and yielded only 52 yards
on the ground, allowing only 16
yards in the second half.
The Pirate defense allowed
only 2 completions for Tri-
County in the passing depart
ment for 22 yards. Several long
yardage pass plays were broken
up by the Pike defense.
“We are going into the game
optimistic," Coach Floyd said.
He said it will be homecoming
for Lamar County and “we
know they will be looking for a
victory in the game with us.”
Starting on defense for Pike
will be Marcus Thompson and
