Edith Washington receives
Georgia EAC scholarship
Edith Washington, the
daughter of Ruth and Melvin
Washington of Route 1, Bar
nesville, has been awarded a
scholarship from the Georgia
Educational Articulation
Committee for academic ex
cellence while in high school.
She was chosen from those
students who expect to enter
Griffin Tech this fall. Her
grades and academic
achievements were the major
criteria for her consideration
Powdery mildew hurts soybean yield
Powdery mildew can
decrease soybean yields, ac
cording to Dr. Dan Phillips,
plant pathologist at the
University of Georgia College of
Agriculture Experiment Station
near Griffin.
Phillips tested the Hampton
266-A soybean variety to
determine the effects of
powdery mildew on yield. After
37 treatments using several
different fungicides and several
methods of application, he
found a strong relationship
between low yields and high
mildew content. The treatment
with the lowest powdery
mildew rating produced the
highest yield—36 percent higher
than the control plants.
According to the research
scientist, Hampton is one
variety susceptible to powdery
mildew. “Hampton used to be
used a lot in Georgia but in the
last few years it has been
replaced by other varieties. Os

in her honor at Georgia
Tech in Atlanta.
Miss Washington graduated
second in her class at Lamar
County High School and was
salutatorian of her class. She
was a charter member and
later, secretary of the
