career in 1945 as an operator
and held positions in the plant
and commercial department
before assuming her present
position as a teller in the Griffin
Business Office.
She and her husband, John,
have 3 children and reside on
Hamilton boulevard.
Heavenly Way
observes
anniversary
The Heavenly Way Baptist
Church will celebrate its second
anniversary Sept. 22-25, at 210
Lakewood drive.
The Rev. R.L. Starks will
preach Thursday night and
the Rev. Jammie Curtis will
preach Friday night.
The Rev. L.R. Sims is pastor.
Federation of Garden Clubs appoints officers
The Griffin Federation of
Garden Clubs held its Sep
tember meeting Tuesday at the
Flint River Library. President
Mrs. Bates Bowers, Jr. an
nounced the following
resignations: Mrs. Tom
Lockhart as third vice
president; Mrs. Matthew
Maher, Jr. as second vice
president; and Mrs. Lutie
Johnston as recording
secretary.
She announced the following
appointments: Mrs. James
Cobb as third vice-president
Mrs. Tom Jones as second vice
president and Mrs. Ronald
Massey as recording secretary.
Mrs. Phil Boswell, flower
show chairman, announced the
times for horticulture entries to
be at the fair grounds and that
all plant entries were required
to remain at the fair grounds
until the fair was over.
Individual clubs are responsible
for keeping arrangements and
plants fresh and watered.
Mrs. Bowers, at the recom
mendation of Mrs. John
Carlisle, yearbook chairman,
proposed that a functional
yearbook instead of a
decorative one be used this
year. The board accepted this
measure.
The federation will be host to
the annual Redbud District
meeting Oct. 18 at the country
club. Town and Country
Garden Club will do the
program covers, name tags and
table decorations. President
Mrs. Danny Hudgins reported
that everything was precessing
well as was almost finished.
Mrs. Bowers announced that
the speaker for the meeting will
be Mrs. Clara Dunn and there
would be workshops on award
programs and garden therapy
among others.
The Garden Club of Griffin
will give a trophy to the
federation to be presented
annually to a garden club for
being the “Club of the Year.”
To be eligible for the trophy the
garden club must make a
presentation of all its projects
and activities accomplished
during the year. The award
must be applied for by January
15 and the trophy will be
awarded at the annual
federation spring luncheon. The
Historical Society will house the
trophy during the year.
A memorial for Quimby
Melton, Sr. was approved. Mr.
Melton was a life member of the
federation and a good friend. A
tree will be planted at the
Historical Society in memory of
Mr. Melton.
The civic projects will be
November 15 at the First
Methodist Church. Larry Lucas
of Atlanta will present a
program on holiday
decorations. There will be 2

morning and one in the evening.
Tickets will be sold to local
garden clubs and open to the
public on November 1. Mem
bers of the garden clubs in
Jackson, Forsyth, Barnesville,
Thomaston and Concord have
been invited to attend. Larry
Lucas will also offer items he
has demonstrated and some of
the materials used for sale.

Designer Flower Show at
Columbia Mall in Decatur will
be held. Competitors will be
members which are all judges.
On October 28, 29 the
Chrysanthemum Show will be
held at Rich’s downtown. Local
