Questions about prostate
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
j DEAR DR. LAMB - I am
K now in my 80th year and ex
cept for some prostate trouble
I am in fairly good health.
Last year I started having to
get up at night and have to
■ relieve myself more often
during the day. Whenever I
rise from the sitting position I
have to go. In addition, the
starting of the flow is difficult
and I do not empty completely
so that after a few minutes I
am compelled to relieve
|p myself again. I saw my
urologist and after a complete
examination including a
cystoscopy the only remark he
made was to see him in six
months or sooner if
■ necessary.
Now, Dr. Lamb, I have a
few questions. Can a
malignancy be involved? I
i realize that the enlarged
prostate diminishes the lumen
of the urethra so that there is
■ difficulty in starting the flow,
but why do I get another urge
B a minute or two later?
Although the urologist has
not suggested it, is there any
K reason why a prostatectomy
is indicated at this time?
Do you think the urologist is
i waiting for me to close up
jefore he operates? Is this the
jsual procedure in similar
cases?
If there is no malignancy at
present, can a malignancy be
precipitated by operating?
■ DEAR READER - Just
because a man has an enlarg
ed prostate or an obstructed
flow from the prostate does
not mean a malignancy is pre
sent. A prostate gland may
have an acute infection, a
chronic infection, become
enlarged or develop a
malignancy. To give you more
information on it I am sending
■ you the Health Letter number
1-6, Prostate Gland. Others
who want this information can
send 50 cents with a long,
stamped, self-addressed
envelope for it to P.O. Box

POLLY’S PROBLEM
DEAR POLLY — Slacks or pants that I buy for myself
are always too long When I alter them, I always save
the strips that are cut off the bottom and use them to
I make appliques to go on a shirt for a cute suit.
To make cute pants suits for my children I put strips
of a contrasting color or print in the sides of the pants
legs Then I either make a blouse or trim one with the
same material. I have also used pretty scraps of
material to add yokes and cuffs to plain shirts that were
bought before this style became popular.
Can you tell me how to get cola stains out of double
knits? The spray I use before doing laundry works on
every other stain I have tried it on but not cola spots.
-MRS. O.W.
DEAR MRS. O.W. — Soft drink spots are tricky in
that they may appear to be colorless at the time but
later turn yellow or brown. Cool water should always be
sponged on them at the time of the accident. If it looks
stained, sponge with equal parts of alcohol and water
and then rinse out. You might try rubbing glycerine into
your stain, leave on about 30 minutes, rinse out with
clear water and then launder, using hot suds if possible.
Os course, any stain removal treatment is subject to the
effect on a particular fabric and its color, so always test
first. -POLLY.
DEAR POLLY — Save three two-pound size coffee cans, cut
the bottoms out of two cans (an electric can opener will make
a nice smooth cut) and then stack all three, on on top of the
other with, of course, the one that is intact at the bottom. Tape
them all together and then cover with pretty adhesive backed
paper that matches your bathroom and have a convenient
holder that stores four rolls of toilet paper. —HILDEGARDE.
DEAR POLLY — I have had very good luck removing stub
born stains from clothes by using a denture cleaning pill dis
solved in water. —MAXINE.

The older a man gets the
more likely he is to have nests
of cancer cells in the prostate.
The later these occur the less
likely they are to grow rapidly
or spread. A man may live out
his life span and never have
any trouble from such cells. A
number of these are diagnos
ed only by examination after
death, or found only during a
prostate operation. Frequent
examinations by your doctor
will detect any lump or nodule
that might signal a change
and still gives the doctor time
to provide an actual cure of
the cancer.- The cancer
growth should be detected as
early as possible. That is the
reason for repeated ex
aminations.
The enlarged prostate
prevents complete emptying
of the bladder and because it
is distended it is constantly
sending out signals through
your nervous system that you
need to empty it. That is the
basic reason for the frequent
need to relieve yourself. Your
doctor knows just how much
residual urine is in your
bladder from your tests. Ap
parently he doesn't think it is
enough to justify surgery in
your case at this time.
If there is a malignancy in
volved it must be a small nest
of cells in the prostate and
probably has nothing to do
with your obstructive symp
toms or your doctor would
have advised surgery.
Whether or not you need a
prostate operation depends
upon how much obstruction
you have. Doctors usually do
not wait until the opening is
completely closed. Surgery
will not cause a malignancy
but if there are any small
nests of cells that cannot be
felt by finger examination
these might then be found.
