in 1908. The anniversary will be held Sunday, Sept. 25 with
Sunday School at 9:45 a.m., Sunday services at 11:00 a.m.,

Rev. Beddingfield, pastor of the church from 1944-47 and
pastor since 1971, said all friends and former members of
the church are invited to attend the observance.

where they were to board the
buses.
A witness said the crowd in
side the hall panicked when
they learned police had con
verged outside. “There were
about 500 inside the hall and
more outside. Everyone scat
tered and ran,” said the wit
ness, Manassch Moerane.
The disturbance followed a
last-minute refusal by the local
road transportation board to is-
sue permits to five black-owned
bus companies hired to take
mourners to Biko’s funeral Sun
day in King William’s Town, 350
miles from here.
The board issues permits
needed by bus companies to
travel outside their normal
routes and areas.
About 20,000 mourners are
expected in King Williams
Town for funeral services at a
sports stadium for Biko, who
died under mysterious circum
stances in a Pretoria prison
hsopital Sept. 12.
Biko, 30, founder of the black
consciousness movement in
South Africa, had been arrested
three weeks earlier. Authorities
said he was on a week-long
hunger strike before his death,
but the results of an autopsy
have not been released.

average homeowner but is a big windfall
to the big property owners — many of
whom don't even live in the city.
