Civil session
The civil session of Spalding
Superior Court will continue for
two weeks. The first week gets
under way Monday, Oct. 4 at 9
a.m. with Judge Andrew
Whalen presiding.
The second week begins
Monday Oct. 10 at 9 a.m.

NEW YORK (AP) - The
American Friends of the Hebr
ew University have presented
the Torch of Learning Award to
Sir John Pope-Hennessy, direc
tor of the British Museum and
former director of the Victoria
and Albert Museum.
Pope-Hennessy, 63, has writ
ten a number of books on art
and has done catalogs for the
Victoria and Albert Museum,
the Frick Collection and the
Kress Collection. He is also
consultative chairman of the
department of European paint
ings at the Metropolitan Mu
seum of Art in New York.

World's Largest Live Land Turtle In Capativity. Gussie Will Be At Spalding Square.

300 YEARS OLD 582 POUNDS
She is listed as the world's largest land turtle in captivity, and is 10 feet, 4 inches
around the shell and stands 37 inches tall. Gussie is a young 300 to 500 years old and
probably will live another 200 years. She was captured in 1940 in the Galapagos
islands. She lives in Orange Grove near Tampa, Ha. where the children love her and play
with her.

Night classes
in slimnastics
begin Oct. 4
The Griffin-Spalding County
Recreation Dept, has an
nounced that fall slimnastics
classes for women at night
will begin Tuesday, Oct. 4.
They wiU be held each Tuesday
and Thursday night, from 7
p.m. until 8 p.m..
Registration fee is $3.00 per
month, payable at class only.
Adele Brinkley wiU be the in
structor.
McLendon
completes
workshop
Griffin resident F.W. “Rick”
McLendon has completed a
merchandising management
training workshop at the
JCPenney Regional Training
Center in downtown Atlanta.
The course emphasizes the role
of the merchandiser in the
store, merchandising principles
and systems and such
management precesses as
objectives-setting, planning,
organizing, leading and con
trolling at the first-level
management assignment.
McLendon lives on Route 6 in
Griffin, and has been with
Penney’s since last September.
He is a management trainee at
the Southlake Mall JCPenney
store in Morrow.

Coker and Connell to lead revival
Dr. Sam Coker, senior
minister of Grace United
Methodist Church in Atlanta,
will be the evangelist for revival
services Monday through
Thursday at 7:30 at the Midway
United Methodist Church on
High Falls road.
The Rev. Les Connell, pastor
of the Adairsville United
Methodist Church, will be the
song leader and soloist.
Dr. Coker has pastored
several churches in the North
Georgia Conference, including
the First United Methodist
Church of Barnesville.
He graduated from Peidmont
College and received a master
of divinity from Candler School
Page 13
of Theology, Emory University.
He received his doctorate of
divinity at LaGrange College.
Dr. Coker serves on several
committees of the North
Georgia Conference and has
been active in the “Here’s Life
America” conferences
throughout the United States
and Canada.
He is married to the former
Gene Allison and they are the
parents of two daughters, Cathy
and Carol.
Connell is best known in the
Griffin area as music director
and youth leader at Mt. Zion
Campground. He also has
pastored several churches in
the North Georgia Conference.

A native of Atlanta, he is a
graduate of Auburn and Emory
Universities.
He is married to the former
Marcia Fleet of Athens and they
are the parents of a daughter,
Kimberly.
Mrs. Joanne Bass will be the
organist for the revival. Mrs.
Jewell Harper will be pianist
and Mrs. Myrna Sterson, the
choir director. The choir will
present special music each
evening.
A nursery will be provided for
the services.
After the service on Monday
night, a reception will be in the
fellowship hall in honor of Dr.
Coker and the Rev. Connell.
