Care of the skin
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR LAMB - I
would be thankful if you could
write something about the
salve, 5-Fluorouracil. 1 was
told by a dermatologist that I
have actinic keratosis „nd she
prescribed this salve to heal
it. I heard that this is a very
powerful drug and am uneasy
and worried about using it. I
would have to put it all over
my face. Could you give me
vour opinion?
DEAR READER - It is a
well recognized and effective
treatment for actinic
keratosis, those little gray or
brownish scaly spots that
develop on the skin. These
changes in the skin are the
result of damage from solar
radiation. Some people are
more susceptible to the sun’s
damaging rays than others.
, It is important to treat these
spots as some of them can
become skin cancer and re
quire more drastic treatment.
I might add that skin cancer,
other than malignant
melanoma, can usually be
completely cured. If you don't
treat it early though the treat
ment may increase any
disfigurement that might be
caused by removing the
malignant area.
The salve you mention is a
prescription item so readers
needn't expect to go to the
drug store and buy it for home
use. It is a powerful salve and
one must be instructed in its
use. It is important to not get
it in the eyes.
It will cause areas of the
skin that have already un
dergone changes that you
can't see with the naked eye to
turn red, and eventually scale
off Completely normal skin
tissue will not be affected by
the salve In this way it
literally identifies areas that
have been damaged or un-
Jacelyn and Dennis:
no wedding plans
By Dick Kleiner
DEAR DICK: Is there any truth to the article which said
that Jaclyn Smith and Dennis Cole were expected to marry?
J.K.L., Linden, Pa.
No. Friends, yes. Good buddies, yes. Date mates, yes. But,
at the moment, they have no marriage plans.
DEAR DICK: Is it true that Jaclyn Smith is quitting
Charlie’s Angels? SUSAN FLAMMANG, Dyersville, lowa.
No. At least not this season. Jackie will stick with her
angelic wings through the '77-’7B season, and we 11 have to
wait until next year to see what happens next year.
DEAR DICK: Why do you give silly readers the time of day?
Somebody asked you if Peter Marshall had artificial legs. You
must either feel sorry for them or not get any better letters. I
suggest you start writing your own questions. By the way, did
Barbra Streisand have a nose job? STEVEN M.
MCALLISTER, Kalamazoo, Mich.
Speaking of silly questions, right? Actually, I once inter
viewed a plastic surgeon who swore that he had performed a
very minor job on Barbra — not a total reconstruction, merely
a small thing — and I reported that and Barbra, through her
representatives, insisted it wasn’t true, that it had never
happened, and that she has never been touched by a plastic
surgeon. She should know.
DEAR DICK: Rumor has it (and the rumor lingers on) that
Danny Bonaduce died from a drug overdose. Is he dead and, if
so, what of? LEON DURUPT, Hays, Alta., Can.
No matter how long that rumor lingers, it’s still untrue.
Danny is alive and well and, as a matter of fact, currently
filming the movie, “Stingray,” with Mark Hamill of “Star
Wars.”
DEAR DICK: I have heard that when a fan writes to a star,
that they usually get a form letter in return because, un
derstandably, the stars do not have time to read all their fan
mail and must hire secretaries to look through and answer.
But I have also heard that if a letter is interesting and funny
with little drawings and not full of the usual mush that it will
reach the star, who may even answer it. Is this true? J.H.,
Wilder, Ida. , u .
You can’t generalize. It could happen. But it s just as likely
to be answered by a form letter, if anything. More and more
stars employ fan mail services to handle their mail, and they
rarely pick out an interesting letter — no matter how good the
drawings are — to send to the star directly.
DEAR DICK: I have a bet with a friend on this. I say Jeff
Chandler passed away several years ago. She says he is still
alive. Please settle this. WILLIAM JACKSON, Springfield,
Mo.
You win this one. Chandler died in 1961.

dergone changes compared to
healthy skin.
Because the face is exposed
so much more to the sun than
the body it is frequently the
main location for solar
keratosis. The backs of the
hands are also often involved
You can help prevent these
changes in the skin by protec
ting the skin properly from
the sun I am sending you the
Health Letter number 7-10,
Your Skin: Sun, Aging, Spots
and Cancer, to give you infor
mation on taking care of your
skin and how to prevent solar
damage of the type you now
have. Others who want this in
formation can send 50 cents
with a long, stamped, self
addressed envelope for it to
P.O. Box 1551, Radio City Sta
tion. New York, N.Y., 10019.
People who do not care for
their skin properly are more
apt to have an “old skin"
earlier in life. The suntan
ritual is a frequent factor as is
cigarette smoking.
The effects of skin damage
may not show up for years
afterward Young people want
a nice tan but when age 40
rolls around they want to look
25. The two are not compati
ble
It is important to realize
that the sun affects the skin
all year round. People with
exceptionally fair skin should
use protection all year, in
winter as well as summer.
You can use one of the
chemical screening agents
mentioned in The Health
Letter as a simple lotion each
morning before being exposed
to the sun.
(Because of the volume of
mail Dr. Lamb cannot answer
your letters personally, but he
will answer representative
letters of general interest in
his column I
