Jackson
beverage
firm to move
Jackson Beverage Company
has scheduled groundbreaking
ceremonies Monday at 9:30
a.m. to signal the start of
construction on its new home.
The firm will move to
property near the Borden
Company just off the
Williamson road.
The firm will vacate its
facilities on the Jackson road
near East Griffin when its new
home is complete.
Students
planning
paper drive
The Griffin High Student
Council will have a paper drive
during the next two Sundays.
Students will pick up paper on
the south side of Griffin this
Sunday and on the north side
next Sunday.
They asked people with paper
to donate to tie it in bundles.
Sosbee guest
evangelist
Evangelist J. D. Sosbee, Jr.,
of Gainesville, will be guest
speaker at the First
Congregational Holiness
Church, Sunday, Sept. 25, in
both the morning and evening
services.
Services begin at 11 a.m. and
7 p.m. The church is located on
Hwy. 92 at West Mclntosh road.

VFW 8480 Auxiliary
The Ladies Auxiliary of Vaughn-Blake Post 8480 of VFW
will meet Sunday night at 7 o’clock at the post home. All
members are urged to attend and bring a covered dish.
Homecoming
Homecoming at Central Lake Church of God on High
falls road will be held Sunday with the Rev. Timothy L.
Cornett of Duluth as guest minister. Singing will be held
in the afternoon, beginning at 2 p.m. Gerald Bailey is
director. Featured on the program will be the Duluth
Church of God choir, Mrs. Timothy Cornett, director; the
Mike Greer family; Terry Skinner and the Heirs of Glory
and the Ladies Trio. The Rev. Walter Pettitt is the pastor.
Revival
The Barnesville First Pentecostal Holiness Church will
be in revival Sept. 26-Oct. 2. Services will begin each
evening at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Joe E. Campbell of Greenville, S.
C., will be guest evangelist.
On Friday night a singspiration service, featuring
Shirley Salters and The Believers of Thomaston will be
held. The Rev. Earl Smith is the pastor.
Griffin BPW Club
The Griffin Business and Professional Women’s Club
will have its monthly dinner meeting Tuesday night at 7
o’clock at the Griffin Country Cub.
King, Queen
Sunday will be King and Queen Day at the Providence
Baptist Church to be observed in a special program at 3
p.m. The Rev. R. L. Curtis is pastor. The public is invited.
Fashion show
Girl Scout leaders, co-leaders and other interested
adults are invited to a fashion show on Girl Scout uniforms
and accessories Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 to 9:45
a.m. at J. C. Penney Co., Girl Scout uniform headquar
ters. Refreshments will be served.
Class meeting
The Fairmont Class of '6B will have a class meeting
Sunday, at 4 p.m. at the Police Youth Community Center.
PWP camping trip
The Parents Without Partners Family Camping Trip is
now in progress. Families left for Unicoi State Park
Friday from Northgate Shopping Center and will return
on Sunday.

Pike
Schools open smoothly
Pike County Elementary School opened smoothly
largely because of a one-week preplanning program the
teachers attended.
During the preplanning, teachers arranged schedules,
gathered materials, grouped students, arranged
classrooms and wrote lesson plans. They also took part in
a first aid workshop with a nurse from the Griffin-
Spalding County Hospital.
Lamar
Barnesville receives grant
The City of Barnesville has received a >IO,OOO grant
from the Governor’s Emergency Fund for a recreation
project. Supplemented with SB,OOO of local funds, the grant
will be used to build a tennis court, a basketball court, and
fencing for both at the Mill Street Recreation Center.
Jaycees get assistance
In response to a request from the City of Barnesville,
MTAPDC is assisting the Barnesville Jaycees with a
beautification project for Market street in the downtown
area.
Graphics chief Kinn Jester has prepared a series of
drawings for the Jaycees depicting a plan for street trees,
planters and sidewalk improvements.
Henry
Employees get bomb scare
Some employees of McDonough Power Equipment went
home early Tuesday afternoon after a switchboard
operator received a bomb threat. The anonymous phone
call came around 2 p.m.
According to the caller, the bomb was set to go off
between 3 and 4 p.m. The plant was shut down at 2:30 and
its employees were dismissed. No evidence of a bomb was
found.
Nudist story finished?
The stormy story of the Garden of Eden Nudist Club
may have ended Thursday when Larry Fowler appeared
before the Henry County Planning Commission to request
a conditional use permit for recreational activities.
Fowler said he wanted to reopen the shooting range which
has been on the property for some time.
Fayette
Fayette is third fastest
Fayette County is the third fastest growing county in the
state according to a study released by the office of
planning and budget for the state. The report shows
Fayette had a gain of 47.84 percent in a 6-year period.
Fayette was ranked behind Gwinnett and Douglas
counties in percentage growth.
Board increases millage
The Fayette County Board of Education increased its
tax millage rate for the coming year by 1.17 mills. The
new rate is 16 mills; last year’s millage rate was 14.83.
Os the 16 mills, 14.22 are for general operating funds and
1.78 for bond sinking funds.
Butts
School bond issue proposed
A report from a citizen’s committee in Butts County
recommends that a bond referendum be held on Nov. 8 to
provide $3,300,000 for a complete renovation and
modernization of the county’s school facilities.
The Butts County Board of Education has unanimously
endorsed the proposed bond issue and set the date for the
referendum on Nov. 8.
Flovilla kills property tax
The City of Flovilla has become the second municipality
in Butts County to abandon the levying of property taxes
for 1977. The City of Jackson was first.
Flovilla Vice Mayor David T. Floyd said that revenues
produced by the local option sales tax were sufficient to
operate the city without any assessment against property
owners.
Upson
Deputies destroy marijuana
Upson deputies last week destroyed some 200 marijuana
plants just off the Rocky Bottom road.
No arrests were made. The deputies said it was just a
routine clean-up job.
Sherrer named president
Perry D. Sherrer has been named president of the
Thomaston Publishing Co., Inc. which publishes The
Thomaston Times and Free Press and the Shopping News.
Sherrer, 34, was president of the Ashley County (Ark.)
Publishing Co., Inc. and publisher of The Crossett News-
Observer and the Ashley County Shoppers Guide. He is a
native of Tallahassee, Ala.

Mrs. Starr
Mrs. Sallie Mae Miller Starr
of 510 North Eight street died
Friday at her residence after a
lengthy illness. She was the wife
of the late Seaborn Starr and the
daughter of the late Otis Miller
and the late Rocelia Heard
Miller. Mrs. Starr was bom in
Spalding County and was a
member of the Red Oak United
Methodist Church.
Mrs. Starr is survived by a
niece, Miss Carrie Miller of
Atlanta; a nephew, Robert Otis
Miller of Atlanta; uncles and
aunts, Mr. and Mrs. Modis
Miller, Mr. and Mrs. I. John
Heard, all of Griffin, Mrs.
Gazzie Barette of Beaver, Falls,
Pa., and Della Milner of Cin
cinatti, Ohio; and 4 sister-in
laws and 2 brother-in-laws.
The funeral will be conducted
Sunday at 1:30 p.m. from the
Heck • Chapel United Methodist
Church with Dr. W. A. Perry,
Sr. officiating. The body will lie
in state 30 minutes before the
funeral. Burial will be in the
Red Oak Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family
has requested donations be
made to the Red Oak Church
building fund or the American
Cancer Society.
Friends may visit the family
at the home of Mrs. W. J. Ison of
328 Jefferson street.

Charles Swanson will be con
ducted Sunday at 3 p.m. from
the Pleasant Grove Baptist

Mrs. Mary Viva Hagwood
Kent of 201 Elizabeth street died
at Brightmoor Nursing Home
Friday. Mrs. Kent was born in
Tennessee but lived in Griffin
for more than 60 years.
She was a member of the
First Assembly of God Church
and was a retired Crompton-
Highland Mills employee.
Mrs. Kent is survived by a
daughter, Mrs. Robert Short of
Griffin; A son, Charles Stanford
of Griffin; 2 sisters, Mrs. Vera
Harmon of Griffin and Mrs.
Inez Hambrick of Atlanta; a
brother Mack Hagwood ol
Texas; and 8 grandchildren and
10 great-grandchildren.
