John Astin:
Operates his own submarine
John Astin Operates His
Own Submarine By DAN
LEWIS
HOLLYWOOD - It had
not been John Astin’s in
tentions to star in a televi
sion series this season.
When he initially agreed to
get involved with a new
series, 'Operation Petti
coat' for ABC, he was
hired to direct the pilot. He
had also directed the pilot
film for another new series
coming into the fall season,
'Rosetti and Ryan' for
NBC.
But somewhere along
the way, while John Astin
pursued his assignment as
director of 'Operation
Petticoat," and was testing
other actors for the leading
role of submarine com
mander, he suddenly found
himself in demand as an
actor, as well as director:
'One day, Fred Silver
man (ABC’s programming
chief) came over to the set
and suddenly said, ’You
know, John, I think you
ought to play Sherman (Lt.
Comdr. Matthew Sher
man, skipper of the sub).’ I
thought about it for a week,
and then decided it was a
great idea.*
So Astin took over the
lead role, and also directed
the pilot. Now he’ll con
tinue as Comdr. Sherman,
and will direct some epi
sodes. He won’t be able to
direct any more 'Rosetti
and Ryan* episodes, how
ever.
"Operation Petticoat*
which is slotted for Satur
day nights, 8:30-9 on ABC
derives from a 1959 com
edy of the same title.
It costarred Cary Grant
and Tony Curtis, and was
slapstick, sophisticated
comedy. The film had
many hilarious moments,
but was an uneven come
dy.
Astin believes that his
television version has a
different look than the or
dinary TV comedy fare,
which is what appealed to
him.
There are lots of stories
unique to submarines, "he
explained. There is a par
ticular confinement, isola
tion and continuing jeop
ardy. But in the series, we
face a completely new situ
ation. The film was made
in 1959. Today we have
different standards for
entertainment, different
moralities. If, in fact, the
TV version has any artistic
anticedent, I would think it
would be ’Mr. Roberts’ a
more mature movie.'
The basic plot involves a
submarine crew which res-
Baker, Felicia Farr,
Sheree North and Nor
man Fell co-star. 1973.

cues five nurses during

ing circumstances that
keep them together in the
confined quarters of a sub
marine of questionable
seaworthiness in the Pacif
ic. Richard Gilliand as
wheeler-dealer Lt. Nick
Holden, Yvonne Wilder as
Major Edna Howard, are
costarred. Melinda Naud,
Jamie Lee Curtis, Dorris
Thomson and Bond Gideon
play the other nurses,
whose fairly attractive
legs play equally impor
tant roles in the story lines.
In a trend to sex on TV
and away from violence,
shows with pretty ladies
and attractive legs are in
particular popularity at
the moment. Obviously,
ABC feels 'Operation Pet
ticoat' will do a lot for
voyeurism. Early indica
tions support this conten
tion since the series has
been sold to the Canadian
market for the highest
price ever paid for a half
hour situation comedy
series, according to Astin.
But Astin is quick to
defend television, versus
films, on sex appeal. Atti
tudes are in sharp con
trast, he contended.
"One of the things wrong
with movies today is that
they are anti-human. Mo

tion to the graphics of the
body, whether copulating
or killing. There’s no depth
to the characters. They
(the characters) have no
minds, which explains why
people don’t go to movies.
In television,' he contin
ued, 'we’re not interested
in the graphics (although
viewers of the pilot would
question that) of it. We’re
more interested in charac
ter study.'
Astin speaks from years
of experience in a career
that includes stage (more
than 1,000 appearances in
many shows) and TV
series.
Married to Academy
Award-winner Patty Duke,
he has often worked with
her since their marriage.
But, in recent years, he
spends more time direct
ing and writing and pro
ducing than acting. His
earlier series were I’m
Dickens, He’s Fenster,'
and The Addams Fami
ly,' which enjoyed a good
run.
He speaks glowingly of
his wife’s acting. "She is
such a good actress. She
can very easily drop her
self into characters, with
total absorbtion of reality.
She’ll be a good director
some day.*
