Lamar County tops
Pike county, 21*7
Lamar County was given
credit for a 21-7 victory over
Pike County Friday night, but
the Pirates themselves should
have been given some of the
credit.
The Pirates fumbled the ball
away to the Trojans four times
and gave up a safety.
One of the fumbles set up a
touchdown and another was set
up on a long punt return. The
safety occurred when quar
terback Andy Cooper tried to
pass to Johnny Pilkenton in the
backfield.
Pike’s own touchdown was set
up by a Lamar County fumble in
the third quarter.
Lamar County put its first
points on the board in the
middle of the first quarter after
recovering one of the Pike
fumbles.

Who says you can’t go home

Both of them will surface

Jaworski called signals for

The Pirates lost the services
of running back Cliff Davis who
was injured in the first quarter.
Davis has been one of the
mainstays of the Pike backfield.
He was replaced with
sophomore Ken Presley who did
an outstanding job, Coach Floyd
said.
Lamar County found itself
unable to move against the Pike
defense in the first quarter and
punted the ball to the Pike 29.
On the first play, running back
Perry Burden fumbled and
Lamar recovered at the 30.
James Harris punched the Pike
defense for 6 yards. Quar
terback Ron Hinson hit Ricky
Lawrence with a 24-yard pass
and Harris took the ball in from
the 4. Hinson kicked the PAT.
Late in the second quarter,
Pike was backed against its own
goal and quarterback Andy
suffered a 17-6 upset loss at At
lanta.
The NFL’s second weekend of
action begins Saturday night
with Minnesota at Tampa Bay.
Besides the Eagles-Rams
clash, Sunday’s program in
cludes Baltimore at the New
York Jets, Buffalo at Denver,
Oakland at Pittsburgh, San
Diego at Kansas City, Seattle at
Cincinnati, Atlanta at Wash
ington, Chicago at St. Louis,
New Orleans at Detroit, the
New York Giants at Dallas,
Houston at Green Bay and
Miami at San Francisco.
On Monday night, New Eng
land plays at Cleveland.
Jaworski had a happy debut
against Tampa Bay, completing
14 of 24 passes for 147 yards and
two touchdowns. And
Philadelphia’s defense allowed
the Bucs just 118 yards and
eight first downs.
The Rams, on the other hand,
dropped their opener against
show Friday night as Bar
nesville defeated Rutledge
Academy 34-0.
Milam scored 3 touchdowns,
rushed 11 times for 70 yards,
completed 3 of 6 passes and
intercepted a pass to set up a
touchdown.
Milam scored Barnesville’s
first touchdown midway
through the first quarter. He
scored a 4-yard run.
He also scored the second
touchdown on a 4 yard run.
His 2 touchdowns gave
Barnesville a 12-0 lead at
Baker nips FRA, 6-0
Baker Academy scored in the
first quarter Friday night and
then played a see-saw battle
with Flint River Academy to
win 6-0.
Coach Curtis Morris said his
Flint River team penetrated the
Baker 20 several times, but
Cooper boomed a punt 40 yards.
James Mays returned it to the
Pike 19 and a penalty moved the
ball to the Pike 10. Harris
picked up 5 yards and Mays
took it into the end zone on the
next play. The PAT failed.
Lamar attempted a field goal
as time was running out in the
half. It was wide.
The field goal had been set up
by a bungled punt. Pike
received the kickoff and was
unable to move the ball, forcing
Cooper to punt. In attempting
the punt, he stepped into the
back of one of his own players.
Lamar recovered at the 15, but
found itself at the 19 after three
plays. The field goal was at
tempted on fourth down.
Fumbleitis struck the Pirates
again in the second half.
Early in the fourth quarter.
Pike’s Joe Roberts recovered a
the Falcons with new quarter
back Joe Namath hitting 15 of 30
for 141 yards and one TD.
Coach Chuck Knox called the
Ram plays from the sidelines
against Atlanta and will contin
ue that policy this week. I-os
Angeles has not lost a home
opener since 1963.
Atlanta, meanwhile, used a
revitalized defense to block the
Ram attack and the Falcons
hope the same ploy works this
week in Washington.
Against the Falcons, the
Rams’ ground game managed
only 59 yards in 21 carries.
The Redskins, shut out for
three periods, packed 17 points
into the final qarter but still lost
to the Giants. New York scored
10 points in the final two
minutes, the last three on Joe
Danelo’s 30-yard field goal with
three seconds left, to score the
upset victory.

Tim Cook played an excellent
game for FRA, gaining 124

Coach Morris said his team

offense Baker was operating.
“We have been hurt by long

we contained their passing

he said.

of the drive were an 18 yard run
by Mays and a 23 yard run by

An attempt by Lamar to gain
2 points by running failed.
Later in the fourth quarter,
Lamar County recovered a Pike
fumble at the Pike 30. Three
plays and a penalty put Lamar
in a punting sitaution at the
Pike 34. The ball rolled dead on
the Pike County 1.
Cooper pushed the ball out to
the 4 and then attempted the
backfield pass which resulted in
the safety.
Lamar County was unable to
put its ground game together in
the first half, but came back
sweeping the ends in the second
half.
Coach Floyd said the
mistakes were costly to Pike
County. Statistics show the
game to be much closer than the
score.
Once again, he had praise for
his defense. The defense was
able to stall the Lamar ground
game in the first half, “but they
were bigger and stronger and
wore us down in the second
half,” Floyd said.
The loss gives the Pirates a 1-
3 record for the season.
Next Friday night, the
Pirates return to their home
field against East Coweta which
was defeated by Palmetto, 14-6,
last night.
Coach Bob Peck had high
praise for his defense which
limited Rutledge to 64 yards
total offense.
Leading the defense were
Robbie Tenney and Jimmy
Wallace. Tenney had 7 tackles
and 4 assists and Wallace had 9
tackles and 2 assists.
Offensively, Scott Tenney
rushed 11 times for 80 yards and
backup quarterback Mike

Foster said he was swinging
for a home run against Atlanta
