Actor Walter Pidgeon
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) - Actor Walter Pidgeon
has returned home to recuperate from a blood clot on his
lung. *
Pidgeon, who celebrated his 79th birthday this weekend,
left St. John’s Hospital on Monday. He had been
hospitalized since Aug. 4, when he entered St. John’s for
brain surgery and was forced to stay when a clot
developed on one of his lungs.
“He’s in very satisfactory condition, and he’ll be going
home to recuperate,” said spokeswoman Peggy Frank.
She said Pidgeon was cheerful and had been given a small
party for his birthday.
Astronaut Jack Swigert
DENVER (AP) — Jack Swigert hopes to join the list of
astronauts who have moved into politics.
The Apollo 13 astronaut, who helped guide a crippled
spacecraft back from an aborted trip to the moon, an
nounced Monday that he will run for the U.S. Senate.
Swigert, a 46-year-old bachelor from Denver, said last
June he would seek the Republican nomination for the
Senate seat now held by Democrat Floyd Haskell, who has
said he will seek re-election.
James E, Groppi
MILWAUKEE (AP) — James E. Groppi, a former
Roman Catholic priest who gained national attention in
the 1960 s as a leader of civil rights demonstrations, now is
trying to become an Episcopal priest.
Groppi said he and his wife, Margaret, have been at
tending St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church for a year. He
goes before a church commission Oct. 4 for interviews
that could lead to his being accepted as a priest.
He said he doesn’t feel he is leaving the Catholic church
because “the essential teachings are the same.”
Groppi was excommunicated by the Roman Catholic
Church several years ago when he married, despite
warnings from superiors that priests were not permitted
to do so.
Singer Bing Crosby
LONDON (AP) — Bing Crosby received a standing
ovation from more than 2,300 fans on the first night of a
two-week show at the famed London Palladium.
Crosby was accompanied Monday by his wife Kathryn,
his guitar-playing son Harry, singer Rosemary Clooney
and jazz pianist Joe Bushkin and his trio.
He last appeared at the Palladium in June, 1976.
Maddox reported
resting comfortably
ATLANTA (AP) — Former
Georgia Governor Lester Mad
dox was reported resting com
fortably late Monday after suf
fering a heart attack Sunday
night.
A hospital spokesman said
Maddox was in guarded condi
tion. Earlier, his doctor had ex
pressed satisfaction with Mad
dox’s progress. He suffered the
attack while working in the
garden of his Marietta home.
An avowed segregationist, the
61-year-old Maddox recently
caused a stir by launching a
nightclub act in partnership
with a black former employe of
his restaurant, Bobby Lee
Fears. Maddox billed his act
“The Governor and the Dish-
Schools

washer.”
Maddox was governor from
1967 to 1971 and lieutenant gov
ernor from 1971 to 1975. During
the latter years he often came
into sharp conflict with then-
Govemor Jimmy Carter.
In 1976, he ran for president
on the American Indepent Par
ty ticket and used the race to
attack Carter as a “radical left
winger.”
Maddox came to national
prominence in the 1960 s when he
used a pick axe handle to guard
the door of his Pickrick fried
chicken restaurant in an effort
to keep blacks from eating
there.
lack of basic learning — read
ing, writing and arithmetic — is
“the No. 1 problem in Georgia
schools,” state School Su
perintendent Dr. Charles
McDaniel said Monday.
Stressing the basics at the
start would eliminate the need
for remedial programs in high
er grades, he said as he toured
Richmond County schools.
Many high school graduates
don’t possess those skills, he
said, adding that sources of
money other than the property
tax should be found to help edu
cation.
