Textile Classic
Clark seeks revenge against Ft. Valley
“52-0”
A large sign with that score on it hangs in the Clark
College dressing room.
Coach Jesse McClardy doesn’t explain the message.
There’s really no need to. His players already know.
For those who don’t: Fort Valley State ran over Clark
College 52-0 here last year in the 16th annual Textile
Classic.
The 17th Classic is scheduled Saturday and the huge
sign is Coach McClardy’s way of reminding his players of
what happened a year ago.
“I hung up the sign Monday,” Coach McClardy said. “I
didn’t say a word for 5 minutes. I just let the players look
at it and they got the message,” the coach said.
Coach McClardy, Coach L. S. Epps, Clark Athletic
Director, Coach J. E. Hawkins, Fort Valley, A.D. and one
of his assistants were in Griffin Tuesday to promote the
Classic.
Coaches Epps and Hawkins have been associated with
the Classic from its beginning. They have seen it grow into
one of the state’s top football attractions.
Coach Hawkins called the Textile Classic one of the high

“It is a popular part of our program. People in
Middle Georgia look forward to it,” the athletic director
said.
Coach Epps agreed.
“The Classic means a lot to our program not only in
terms of revenue.
“It offers our alumni in this area an opportunity to see
us play," he said.
Coach Hawkins recalled that several players who
participated in previous Classic have moved on to the
pros, including Larry Rayfield Wright and Morris Stroud
of Griffin.
Mayor Raymond Head welcomed the coaches to Griffin.
“We are proud to be the host city. The city stands ready
to make the Classic a success and we welcome the visitors
to our town,” the mayor said.
Commissioner Louis Goldstein echoed the mayor’s
remarks.
“We appreciate Clark and Fort Valley State playing
here,” he said.
Commissioner Tiggy Jones said the Classic gives

pole and light could not be fixed'
before the game.
Game time is 8 o’clock.
“Flint River is in the process
of rebuilding their football
program. They’ll be playing a
good many sophomores and
juniors. They are looking to the
future,” Coach Bob Peck of
Barnesville Academy said.
Coach Curtis Morris of Flint
River Academy is hoping that
his young team will be able to
break the jinks and bring a
victory home from Barnesville.
Barnesville also is playing a
number of sophomores, in
cluding starters Tim Hearn
(end), Jimmy Wallace
(noseguard), Mike Woodcock
(safety), Earl Rowe (fullback
linebacker) and Don Davis
(slotback).
Barnesville Academy also
has one freshman in a starting
position, Fred Moye at guard.
Senior Jim Milam took over
the quarterbacking duties for
Barnesville Academy after the
second game and has directed
the Warriors to a 2-2-1 record.
Milam started the first two
games as tailback.
Junior Scott Tenney has been
one of the Warriors most con
sistent performers this year and
has twice been selected the
Warrior “Player of the Week,”
according to Coach Peck.
Tenney is averaging 6.1 yards
per carry from his tailback
position and is second in rushing
behind Milam.
Barnesville’s offensive line is
anchored by seniors John
Cannafax, Robbie Tenney and
Todd Jenkins — all probable
All-Region candidates.
Defensive tackle Mark
Thompson, another senior, is
enjoying his best year at BA,
Coach Peck said.
The Warriors are not taking
Flint River lightly despite Flint
River’s 4-0 record.
“They gave Baker a good
game on the road last week and
I don’t feel like they’ll have any
problem getting up for us,”
Peck said.

ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta
Falcons Coach Leeman Bennett
is trying to get his team up to
play the New York Giants,
while General Manager Eddie
Leßaron is looking for a home
where the National Football
League club can settle down.
Bennett said Tuesday it might
be “more difficult to get the
team up” to play the lowly
regarded Giants after a victory
over Los Angeles and a close
loss to Washington, both felt to
be title contenders.
“My approach won’t really be
any different,” Bennett said
during a Tuesday news confer

The Griffin High B-team will

Grangers, the B-team had
compiled a string of 19 con
secutive wins.
The Bear Cubs had romped
over Newton County, the last
team to beat them before the

Coach Joe Grubbs has had his
team working hard this week
and is hoping the Forest Park
game will be the beginning of
another string.

the annual Elks benefit game.

who are now members of the teams.
“The Classic is an asset to our town,” he said.
Several ex-Griffin High players will be on the starting
teams when Clark and Fort Valley kick off Saturday night
at 8 p.m.
The Clark Panthers are loaded with Griffinites.
Five of them are listed as starters.
They are: Kenneth Ellison, tightend; Phillip McCrary,
flanker; Meredith McCrary, split end; Johnny Wilder,
strong safety; and Gary Hall, cornerback.
Walter Jester and Terry Willis will start for the Fort
Valley State Wildcats.
Fort Valley State has won 8 of the 16 Classics. Clark has
won 6 and 2 ended in ties.
This could be Clark’s year to close the won-lost gap a
little.
The Panthers have a 2-1 record. They defeated Lane 20-
13 and Fisk 13-0.
Miles nipped the Panthers 7-6. “We fumbled the ball a
few times in that one,” Coach McClardy said.
Despite the fumbles, it was a couple of unlucky breaks

should be rated about even, with
a point or two either way. I don’t
look at the schedule and say we
should win this game or lose
that game.
“I know you’ve heard all
coaches say it, but you’ve got to
take them one at a time.”
The Giants did that, beating
the Redskins, who beat Atlanta.
They “got behind four touch
downs in a hurry against Dallas
and few teams can overcome
such a start,” Bennett ob
served. “That score (41-21) is
not as one-sided as it sounds.
The Cowboys had only one or
two long drives.”

Fayette faces tough
test at
The Fayette County Tigers
will face their toughest test of
the season Friday night when
they face the Lakeshore Lan
cers on Lakeshore’s home field
in College Park.
The Tigers have compiled a 4-
0 record and have rolled up 145
points while allowing their
opponents only 6. The Tiger
offensive machine has racked
up 92 first downs and has gained
a total of 1,467 yards.
Coach Reece Hefner’s Lan
cers also have an explosive
offensive machine. The Lancers
have scored 137 points and
yielded only 25 in compiling a 3-
1 record.
Lakeshore will be attempting
to rebound from a 19-6 loss last
week to Avondale.
Fayette County was off last
week and Coach Charles
Winslette’s Tigers are expected
to be up for the Lancers. They
will be trying to keep their
winning string going. He says
his team will be ready mentally
physically.
Fayette County and
Lakeshore have been high in the
cons games, Bennett added up
the score.
“The plus would be that we’re
not turning the ball over and
we’ve stopped the rush,” he
said. “The minus has to be
blown assignments. Last Sun
day, at Washington, we had a
guard pull the wrong way on
first-and-goal at the 10. We
missed blocks that hurt.
“Our goal is to eliminate mis
takes,” he said. “From the be
ginning, I’ve said we don’t want
to be a team of peaks and
valleys. Right now, I’d say
we’re somewhere on the moun
tainside.”
that kept Clark from tying or winning the game.
First, the kicker’s shoe came off on the extra point
attempt that could have tied the score.
Second, a field goal kick hit the cross bar.
Fort Valley State is 0-2. Morehouse beat the Wildcats 13-
6 and Morris Brown stopped them, 35-14.
“We haven’t played all that bad,” Coach Hawkins said.
“We are better defensively than we are offensively. We
, are improving,” he said.
Fort Valley held Morris Brown scoreless for 25 minutes
before losing, 35-14.
Advance Textile Classic tickets are on sale here. They
are available at Cleanwell’s Pressing Club, Simmons
Grocery, VFW 8480, Ralph’s Barber Shop and Horton’s
Service Station.
Advance tickets will be sold until noon Saturday.
Griffinites were urged to purchase them as soon as
possible.
Otis Head, the Classic’s first and only chairman, and
members of VFW Post 8480, sponsors of the event, are
expecting another capacity crowd.
The first Classic was played before fewer than 1,000
fans. The last 3 or 4 have been sellouts.
