Beware of dog
A sign in a window of a Denver service station warns
intruders away as “Was”, a chihuahua, peers out from
inside the station at passersby. But the sign wasn’t meant
to warn people away from the tiny dog. It was posted to
warn them away from “Dave”, a part husky, part wolf
that normally gazes from the window. (AP)
Hired to kill, man says
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - A 46-year-old Atlanta man said
he was hired by an Athens restaurateur to kill restaurant
operator T.K. Harty, a witness testified Wednesday.
Robert Reinhold made the statement during a pretrial
hearing, after which Elmo Liston Florence was bound
over to Clarke County Superior Court on a murder charge
in the Aug. 30 slaying of Harty, operator of T. K. Harty’s
Saloon.
Reinhold testified that Florence told him John H.
Mooney, owner of a pizza restaurant, hired him to kill
Harty. Mooney has not been charged in the case.
Reinhold, owner of Prime Time, another Athens restau
rant, quoted Florence as saying during the conversation
that be shot Harty in the study of his home “and one thing
I hated was messing up that beautiful Persian fug.”
State could get funds
WASHINGTON (AP) - Georgia will receive $300,000
from the U.S. government if Congress approves a
Department of Health, Education and Welfare proposal to
settle a $2.4 billion dispute with 28 states over payment for
social services to the poor.
HEW Secretary Joseph Califano announced the
proposal Wednesday, calling it “the largest financial
dispute between the federal government and the states.”
Georgia had sought $700,000 in the dispute, which had
been fought in the courts since the early 1970 s when HEW
claimed states were receiving or demanding money for
services not authorized by federal law.
New York, which claimed HEW owed it nearly $1
billion, would get the largest share of the settlement,
$214.4 million.
Charged in death
HOMER, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a Commerce
youth who claimed he thought he hit a post, not a person,
has been charged with vehicular homicide in the hit-and
run death of Luther Chambers, 44, of Maysville. '
Banks County Sheriff Henry Crane said Gerry Lewis,
18, was arrested Wednesday and charged in the death of
Chambers, whose body was found on a rural road Sunday
afternoon.
Accused of embezzling
WINDER, Ga. (AP) — Four more counts of theft by
conversion have been brought against Willie Shivers of
Commerce, accused of embezzling about $16,000 from the
United Glass and Ceramics Workers union at the Johns-
Manville fiberglass plant here, officials said.
Authorities in Barrow County said the four charges filed
against Shivers Wednesday bring to nine the number of
counts against him.
Barnwell plant
funds in budget
WASHINGTON (AP) - A
joint U.S. House-Senate confer
ence committee has passed a
compromise fiscal 1978 budget
bill for the Energy Research
and Development Adminis
tration (ERDA).
That removes one more ob
stacle in the way of keeping the
Allied-General Nuclear Ser
vices plant at Barnwell, S.C.,
open for the next year.
The sl3 million appropriation
for research and development
activities at the Barnwell plant
was provided in a separate bill,
but it could not have been spent
without the authorization for the
entire ERDA budget.
The budget bill now must be
approved by the full House and
Senate and signed by the Presi
dent before it takes effect. The
1978 fiscal year began Oct. 1.
Sen. Ernest F. Boilings, D-
S.C., a member of the com
mittee, was successful Wednes
day in turning back an amend
ment that would have delayed
funding for the plant.
The amendment, contained in
the House version, would have
required the House Science and
Technology Committee and the
Senate Energy and Natural Re
sources Committee to review
any ERDA disbursement for 30
legislative days.
