Major Hoople
Bears 14-point favorite
over Jonesboro Cards
By MAJOR AMOS B. HOOPLE
Football Expert
Egads, sports fans.
The Griffin offense broke the
14-point barrier last Saturday
with a 21-6 victory over Forest
Park.
Prior to that game, the Bears
were hung up on 14 points. They
beat Central of Macon 14-7,
Rockdale 14-0 and LaGrange 14-
0.
Now that that jinx is broken,
the Bears’ offense is free to
romp up and down the field with
gusto.
Griffin stands midway of the
season with a 4-1 record. That's
not bad for a team that had to
replace 12 or 13 starters lost to
graduation.
The Bears hit the heart of
their schedule, starting Friday
night at Memorial Stadium.
Jonesboro will be in town for a
bout with Coach Max Dowis’
bruins.
After ’Boro comes battles
with Newnan (the only un
beaten team in 6-AAA) and the
powerful R. E. Lee Rebels.
Coach Dowis and his players
aren’t thinking of Newnan and
right now. They are con
centrating on the Cardinals.
My spies discovered that
Jonesboro has a good offensive
unit. The Cardinals scored 109
points in 5 games. That’s nearly
twice as many points as Griffin
has made.
The same scouts confirmed
that Jonesboro has a porous
defense. The Cards have
allowed 115 points. Over 7
times as many points as Griffin
has given up.
Griffin’s defensive unit is

Cedartown likely to break
loss string to West Rome

Coach John Hill, whose debut in 1976 at Cedartown High
signalled the football team’s first winning season in years,
is concentrating on No. 13 as he prepares the Bulldogs to
face West Rome Friday night.
That is bad news for Cieftan Coach Robert Green, who is
convinced the ’Dogs, now 4-0-1, need no further en
couragement to break the string of 13 games they have
lost to West Rome since 1964.
“Coach Hill, who had a real good weight program
during the off-season feels he’ll have a real good chance to
knock us off this year, and our team isn’t as stront as it
has been,” said Green, whose Cieftans are 2-1-2 for the
season.
“We’re not throwing in the towel, though,” added
Green. “We’re just working a little harder.”
Dale Ayers, who transferred to West Rome this year
from Sprayberry High in Marietta, will start at quar
terback for West Rome, which won the region 7AA title
last year by defeating Cedartown 17-14.
Ayers has completed 24 of 54 passes for 324 yards and
one touchdown. He will get help in the backfield from
tailback Mark Phillips, who has rushed for 306 yards in 44
carries, and fullback Steve Kidney, who has carried the
ball 32 times for 112 yards.
On defense, where the Chieftans have the most ex
perience, tackles Lynn Hudson, a 185-pound sophomore,
and John Morgan, a 180-pound junior, have been in on an
average of 15 tackles a game.
Ned Elrod, who backed up all-state quarterback Ted
Peeples last season, is the strength of the ‘Dogs’ offense
along with fullback Larry Chubb.
Elrod scored on touchdown runs of one and 33 yards and
Chubb scored on a 46-yard run from a fake punt formation
in Cedartown’s 30-0 shutout of Walhalla, S.C., last week.
In that game, the ‘Dogs’ defense, led by linebacker Tim
Mosley, who recovered a fumble and made 12 individual
stops, held Walhalla to nine yards rushing. A week earlier
they allowed Rockmart only 10.

another scoreless string. That

Information gathered by the
super scouts was fed into the
miniature computer. The an-
of Albany, Jonesboro takes on Griffin, Peachtree is at
Lakeside, Americus visits Dublin, Lakeshore tackles
Woodward Academy, Oconee County is at Monroe Area,
Wrens is at Lincoln County and Jefferson meets Dacula.
Woodward, which plays Lakeshore without injured
starting quarterback David Archer, faces a fired-up
Lancer squad which last week blanked previously third
ranked Fayette County of Class AA 28-0.
“Scott McGregor will be our quarterback, but he hasn’t
had any real experience in a game until we were ahead,”
said Woodward Coach Graham Hixon. “He’s capable, but
he just can’t do the same things Archer can.”
Quarterback Mark Sheffield, who passed 27 yards for
one touchdown and ran 11 yards for another against
Fayette, and tailback Johnny Scott, who scored from 24
yards out, are the nucleus of the Lancer offense.
Woodward, currently No. 1 in AA in an associated PresM
poll, is 5-0 for the season and lOthranked Lakeshore is 4-1.
Other Friday games feature Bainbridge at
Thomasville, Central of Thomasville at Tift County,
Baker at Newnan, Richmond Academy at Evans, North
Cobb at Wheeler, Clarke Central at Johnson of Gain
esville, Ware County at Cairo, Jones County at Peach
County, Perry at Putnam County, Collins at Fayette
County, Gordon at Avondale, Dalton at LaFayette,

Deaf, Loganville is at Buford, Banks County at Rabun
County, Mt. de Sales at Monticello, Metter at Wheeler
County, Atkinson County at Patterson, Pickens at Car
tersville, Pelham at Unadilla, Southwest of Atlanta at
