Pearson wins pole
for National 500
By MONTE PLOTT
Associated Press Writer
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -
David Pearson could probably
win the pole position at Char
lotte Motor Speedway in his
sleep.,
The Mercury pilot did it again
Wednesday by taking the pole
for $250,000 National 500 stock
car race. The NASCAR
sponsored event Sunday will
mark the ninth consecutive race
at the 1.5-mile track in which
Pearson has started from the
pole.
“We put a new gear in the car,
stopped up the front end and
gave it our best shot,” a relaxed
Pearson said after hurtling
around the track for a two-lap
average speed of 160.892 miles
per hour.
His 67-second run earned him
the SIO,OOO pole award.
Donnie Allison, National 500
defending champion, earned the
front row spot beside Pearson,
but only after he and Cale Yar
borough pushed their Chevro
lets to speeds that registered
the same on timing clocks.
Both drivers turned in two-lap
averages of 159.848 m.p.h. and
Yarborough was actually listed
as being a thousandth of a
host to Harris County. Game
time is 7:30.
“Harris County has a good
second faster. But NASCAR
officials ruled that the listed
speeds were rounded-off aver
ages and Allison had gone fas
ter.
Yarborough wound up on the
inside of the second row, with
Buddy Baker’s Ford taking the
spot beside him.
Richard Petty, with a run of
just over 159 m.p.h. in his
Dodge, and Darrell Waltrip,
just under the 159 mark in his
Chevrolet, filled the third row.
Pearson was the man to beat,
and the drivers knew it before
the first car took to the track
Wednesday.
“Trying to catch Pearson is
like going bear hunting with a
.22 caliber rifle,” Allison said.
Pearson set the pace early in
the afternoon, being one of the
first of 49 drivers to run for the
20 spots that were filled Wed
nesday.
“I knew Pearson’s speed was
almost impossible to beat,”
Yarborough said, adding that
he felt “helpless, hurt” when
the learned what Pearson had
run.

short distances to qualify for

team and we will have to play a
good game to beat them,’’
Coach Bobby Floyd said.
The Pirates are 2-3 for the
season with the two victories
coming at their previous home
games.
The current 3-game home
stand began last week with an
18-6 victory over East Coweta.
The Pirates had defeated Tri-
County 13-0 two weeks before on
their home field.
Coach Floyd said he was
hoping that all of his players
would be recovered from in
juries in time for the Harris
County encounter.
Last week, running back
Perry Burden saw limited
action, running the ball 9 times,
gaining 37 yards and scoring a
touchdown.
Quarterback Andy Cooper
absorbed most of the loss of his
two main running backs,
carrying the ball 21 times and
gaining 59 yards. Cooper also
scored a touchdown.
Burden suffered an elbow
injury in the game with Lamar
County 2 weeks ago.
Running Back Cliff Davis was
lost for the season when he
suffered a knee injury that
required surgery.
Also expected to be back at
full strength this week are
David Owens and Mark Adams,
two of Pike’s key defensive
players.
Sophomore running back Ken
Presley was put into action in
the latter part of the Lamar
County game and played most
of the game last week against
East Coweta. He carried the
ball 10 times and gained 38
yards.
The Pirates have been
plagued with fumbles in the
backfield because of the in-

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Mis

ers has good reason to be pleased
with himself these days, but
he’s apt to shrug off any com
pliments while hoping aloud
that the Rebels can beat Geor
gia on Saturday.
The 6-footrs, 219-pounder had
what appeared to be his best
collegiate performance last
Saturday in the Rebels’ 21-15
loss to Auburn. He snared seven
passes for 99 yards and moved
up to fourth among the South
eastern Conference’s leading
receivers.
But Weathers, a junior from
Memphis, takes a different view
of the Auburn clash.
“The game was one of the
worst I have played since I’ve
been at Ole Miss,” he said. “I
got a pretty low grade on the
films, and that’s what I go by.”
“The errors I made weren’t
major,” he said. “There were
just a lot of little things like
missed blocking assignments
and my release from the line.”
However, Ole Miss Coach Ken
Cooper indicated Weathers’
leaping catches in the second
half did not go unappreciated
among the Rebel brain trust.
juries and the inexperience of
some of the players.
Coach Floyd has praised his
defensive unit for forcing
turnovers and forcing op
ponents to punt.
Lamar County was able to
capitalize on Pike County’s
mistakes and turn them into
touchdowns. Last week, the

Pirates turned East Coweta’s
mistakes into points on the
board.
“Harris County has a good
ball club and we are going to
have to be playing our best to
beat them. We’ve got to
eliminate some mistakes on
offense and tighten our
defense,” Coach Floyd said.
