Keeps House
Wheelchair is no deterent to Annie Ellis
BY KEVIN COOK
McDonough, Ga.
An accident some six
or seven years ago left
Mrs. Annie Ellis con
fined to a wheelchair,
but the McDonough
woman certainly has not
limited her many activi
ties because of this
misfortune.
“I may have fractured
my hip and I may have
to use this chair, but I
still do the washing,
ironing, cooking and
sewing,” she says indig
nantly. “The only thing I
can’t do is walk by
myself.”-

Mrs. Ellis is an
excellent cook and her
culinary efforts won her
$25 at the Henry County
Fair last year. "I won
the prize for my canned
peaches and apples,”
reports the Racetrack
Road resident, “but I
also put up pears,
berries and hot and
sweet pepper relish.”
One of her specialties
is a pepper relish
mixture consisting of
chopped bell peppers,
hot pepper, apples, car
rots and onions. This
spicy concoction is
superb with vegetables
(or by the spoonful,
provided you have an
asbestos tongue.)
Mrs. Ellis put up 300
jars of various edibles
last year and 150 this
year. ("We didn’t use up
all I canned last year, so
we didn’t need as
much,” she explains.)
The easygoing lady gives
much of her canned
goods to friends and
relatives.
Mrs. Ellis is fond of
baking cakes and pies
for her family. Another
service she performs for
her family is the making
of clothes for her grand-
children. “I make some
clothes for them all
during the summer and
into the fall,” she says.
"I can make two pairs of
pants in a day. I’ve
never done sewing for
money, just for the
family.”
She has also made
some beautiful star
shaped quilts.
Although Mrs. Ellis
came from a relatively
small family of five, she
herself had 10 children
and now has 21 grand
children. These offspring
are scattered from
Atlanta to Detroit, but
they sometimes gather
at the Ellis home for
Sunday dinner. “I fix
one large meal a week
for company, and about
once a month, eight of
my children come and
bring their children. It
takes a lot of cooking,
but I love it!”
A resident of McDon
ough for some 28 years,
Mrs. Ellis has lived in
Henry County all her
life, growing up in
Locust Grove. In the
mid-1940’5, she put her
sewing talent to good use
as a stitcher of Teddy
bears at a toy factory.
