Only women staff Rex Post Office
BY CINDY GLOZIER
Rex, Ga.
The feminist move
ment Is gaining momen
tum faster than most
people realize. Small
municipalities are feel
ing the impact of
women’s liberation
through what has in the
past been a male domi
nated department-the
United States Postal
Service. Today,
Hampton, Locust Grove,
and Rex have post
offices totally manned
by ladies-excuse the
pun-and the mail ser
vice is just as efficient
as ever.
“I suppose all-women
post offices are common
in smaller towns,” states
Rex Postmaster Helen
Copeland. “Over the
past few years, women
have really flooded the
Postal Service in areas
such as delivering mall.
But as far as the
postmaster position is
concerned, that’s been
going on in rural areas
for quite a while. I
replaced Mrs. Emma
Barr Sargent in 1968
here in Rex. She had
been postmaster for 26
years.”
In Georgia there are
148 postmasters, 46 of
them women. Most of,
them supervise small
rural offices.
The Rex Postal’ Ser
vice is divided into two
routes, each covered by
lady mall carriers.
Brenda Seymore handles
Route 1 and Corine Webb
delivers to Route 2.
“We don’t have any
problems with our de
livery,” states Mrs.
Copeland. "Many people
ask us about lifting large
packages and heavy
mailbags. We Just tell
them we can do it. The
Postal Service requires
that employees sign a
statement saying they
can lift up to seventy
pounds before they’re
hired,” she adds.
Mrs. Copeland says if
anything is too heavy all
the women just work
together to pick it up.
The Rex office is a
second class facility,
according to Postal Ser
vice standards. The rat
ing is based on the
office’s revenue and
officials say the Rex
area is growing so fast
that a first class rating
should come within the
next few years.
Route 1 is 23 miles in
area and services 727
customers. Route 2 is 86
miles in area with 602
boxes, having picked up
80 additional patrons this
year.
Mrs. Copeland says

CORNING, N.Y. (AP) -
Techniques for repairing bro
ken glass objects and restoring
books, slides, photographs,
prints, tapes and films are dis
cussed in “The Corning Flood:
Museum Under Water,” a
recently published book.
In June, 1972, the Corning
Museum of Glass was flooded.
Museum officials, terming the
damage “catastrophic,” began
four years of restoration work,
the results of which have been
compiled in the new volume.
The publication was supported
by a grant from the National
Endowment for the Arts in
Washington.
“The Corning Flood” is es
sentially an account of the mu
seum’s own experience, with
about 120 black-and-white pho
tographs, but is intended to be
useful to all similar institutions.
It also contains tips on how to
prevent massive destruction be
fore natural disasters strike.
What shoppers like
NEW YORK (AP) - What’s
the most important factor for
shoppers at a supermarket?
Progressive Grocer reports that
“cleanliness” is in a tie with
“all prices clearly labeled.”
The latter ranked second in
1975 and 1973. Cleanliness was
top-ranked then too.
“Low prices” ranked third in
1975 and fifth in 1977. Third
ranked this year is “good pro
duce department,” up from
fifth.
volumn is growing be
cause the Rex area is
attracting natives from
other states. “So much
of our mail is to and
from people who live or
have lived in other
states,” she says.
“That’s why there’s
more mail. People write
instead of calling.”
Clerks at the Rex
office are Katherine
