named finalist® in the 1977
STAY & SEE GEORGIA
Program.
The announcement was made
by James D. Gonia, chairman,
Travel Council, Georgia
Chamber of Commerce.
Gonia said the STAY & SEE
GEORGIA finalists will be
visited by out-of-state travel
writers Oct. 16-22 and Oct. 30-
Nov. 5, 1977. Following the
visits, winners will be an
nounced from the first, second,
and third year participants
categories in early November.
The 1977 STAY & SEE
GEORGIA State Champion will
be named at the “Carnival of
Awards” Banquet, Thursday,
Dec. 1, Peachtree Plaza Hotel,
Atlanta, in conjunction with the
Governor’s Conference on
Tourism sponsored.
Finalist communities are
competing in the following
categories for further STAY &
SEE GEORGIA Awards:

Man being held
in shoot death
Griffin police were holding a
man in connection with a
shooting incident early Sunday
morning at the VFW Club on
North Third street in which one
man was killed and another
injured.
John Wesley Davis, 32, of 430
North Second street, was held in
the killing of Isaac Williams,
Jr., 33, and of wounding Lin
wood Wynn of 212 Cabin Creek
drive. Williams was dead on
arrival at the Griffin hospital.
Wynn was shot in the ear and
was treated in the hospital
emergency room and released.
The shotting happened about
1:54 a.m., police said.
An investigation was con
tinuing today.
An automobile stolen early
this morning from the Randall
& Blakely Co. lot on the North
Expressway was the same car
used in an armed robbery in
N. Expressway
is getting
new surface
Griffinites who travel the
North Expressway to Atlanta
regularly have been ex
periencing some delays in
recent weeks because of
resurface work.
The delays can be expected to
continue for a few more weeks
as contractors complete the
work.
Resurfacing the route was
done under a state bonding
program.

conununities the tours will also
visit some of Georgia's top
tourist attractions including
Pineisle, Sea Island, Georgia
Agrirama, Plains, Callaway
Gardens, Stone Mountain, Six
Flags Over Georgia, and
Westville.
Clayton County, police said.
Spalding Sheriff’s officers
who were on patrol noticed the
gate on the north side of the
business had been broken open
and notified Griffin police about
3:50 a.m.
A 1977 Ford Granada,
described as silver with a red
top and tag number HHE-941,
had been stolen. Later police
learned it was the same vehicle
used in the Qlayton County
robbery.
A lookout for the vehicle was
continuing today.
Griffin police were checking
out the Jaycees’ Haunted House
on West Poplar street and found
some tire tread material in the
rear of the house which had
been stolen from Mid-Georgia
Bandag Co.
The items were brought to the
city jail and turned over to the
detective division for in
vestigation.
Police also continued to look
for Halloween face masks and
other equipment which was
stolen from the house last week.
Spalding Sheriff’s officers
were investigating the theft of
S6O from the home of William A.
Harris, 1643 Ethridge Mill road
and a tv antenna from the home
of Wayne Holman of the Town
and Country Trailer Park.
The battery was stolen from a
van owned by Goode Nichols
Furniture Co., 206 South Hill
street, police said.

Ceremony
Members of Boy Scout Troop One, the oldest in Georgia,
conducted the flag raising ceremony Sunday afternoon at
the Spalding Kiwanis Fairgrounds. The colors of the
United States and Georgia will fly there throughout the
week. St. George’s Episcopal Church sponsors Troop One,
the first organized in Georgia. Wednesday will be Scout
Day at the fair. All boys and girls active in any phase of
the scouting programs here who come to the fair in their
uniforms will be admitted free on that day.

The Griffin Area Chamber of
Commerce third quarterly
membership breakfast will be
held Thursday at 7:30 a.m. at
the Griffin Holiday Inn.
The business agenda includes
by-laws changes and all
chamber members are urged to
be present.
Dr. Loren Young will be the
guest speaker.
The deadline for making
reservations for the breakfast
meeting is Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Accident
is termed
unavoidable
Mrs. Maggie Reeves Hill, 55,
of 519 West Cherry street, was
listed in serious condition today
at Clayton General Hospital
with injuries she suffered when
hit by a car Saturday night on
North 13th street.
Police said Deloach Ponder,
26, of 548 North 13th street, was
unable to avoid hitting Mrs. Hill
who was walking in the center
of the street. The accident was
termed unavoidable and no
charges were placed against
Ponder.
Mrs. Hill was carried by
ambulance to the Griffin
hospital emergency room, then
transferred to Clayton General
where she was admitted to the
intensive care unit.
Two people were injured
Sunday evening in a collision on
West Taylor street in front of
McDonald’s Restaurant.
They were identified as
Dennis Lee Stuart, 18, of Route
1, Box 516, who was driving one
car, and Mrs. Debra Bryson, 25,
of Hampton, a passenger in a
vehicle driven by Sammy
Eugene Bryson, 28, of Hampton.
Both were treated at the
Griffin hospital.
A Griffin police officer
escaped injury Saturday af
ternoon in a collision at South
Ninth and Meriwether streets.
The 1977 police car received
several hundred dollars in
damages, however.
Sgt Billy Pitts was driving.
John A. Pangle of 634-B Maple
drive, the other driver, was
charged with failing to grant
right of way.

New nurse
supervisor
takes over
Mrs. Doris Dickinson, who
has been serving as interim
director of nursing at the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital since
August, took over duties as
director Friday.
Mrs. Dickinson succeeds Miss
Jean Meehan who resigned
Sept. 1.
She had served at the hospital
as recovery room supervisor.
Her husband is Charles E.
Dickinson, an employe of the
Dixie Pipe Line Co., and their
son, Mark, is a senior at the
University of Georgia.
Mrs. Dickinson graduated
from North Georgia College and
received a B.S. degree in
nursing from Emory Univer
sity. Her affiliations include
Pediatrics at Columbia Presby
terian Hospital in New York
City; Public Health Service in
Fulton County; and psychiatry
at Central State Hospital in
Milledgeville.
She has been employed as
clinical instructor in medicine
and surgery of nursing and
operating room technique and
as assistant professor of
maternity and infant care at
Emory University School of
Nursing.
She also was director of
nurses at Austell Hospital.
The Dickinsons reside at 1117
Skyline drive.

Mr. Fowler
Mr. Daniel Lewis Fowler of
117 Woodlawn drive, died
Sunday afternoon at his home
after an illness of several
months.
Mr. Fowler was a native of
Glenwood, Ga., and had made
his home in Griffin for 40 years.
He was a retired employe of
General Motors Corp., and was
a veteran of World War II when
he served in the U. S. Army. Mr.
Fowler was a member of the
Hanleiter United Methodist
Church.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Doris Shaw Fowler; 3
sons, Roger Fowler, Carlton
Fowler and Wayne Fowler; 2
grandchildren, Chris Fowler
and Gail Fowler, all of Griffin; 3
sisters, Mrs. Jack Bowden,
Mrs. Winfred Morris, both of
Griffin; and Mrs. Frank
Burroughs of Martinez, Ga.; 3
brothers, A. Y. Fowler, C. C.
Fowler, both of Griffin and J. C.
Fowler of Millen.
The funeral will be Tuesday
afternoon at 3 o’clock in the
Hanleiter United Methodist
Church. The Rev. Elvyn
McDonald and the Rev. Allen
Huckaby will officiate and
burial will be in Oak Hill
cemetery. Pittman Rawls
Funeral Home is in charge of
plans. The body will be carried
to the church 30 minutes prior to
the funeral hour.
Mrs. Gates
Mrs. Catherine Gates of 725
East Taylor street died Sunday
at Crawford W. Long Hospital in
Atlanta after an illness of
several weeks.
Mrs. Gates was the wife of
George Gates. She is also
survived by a daughter, Mrs.
Yolanda Anderson.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDowell United
Funeral Home.
Mr. Williams, Jr.
Mr. Isaac Williams, Jr., of 515
Clifton drive, Griffin, died
Sunday at the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Annie Jean Williams of
Forest Park; mother, Mrs. Ida
Williams of Griffin; 5 sisters,
Mrs. Geneva Head, Miss Sara
Williams, Miss Barbara Ann
Williams, Miss Connie
Williams, all of Griffin and Mrs.
Mary Ann Harris of Anderson,
Ind.; 2 brothers, Tommy
Williams and Gary Williams,
both of Griffin; several aunts,
uncles, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Higginbotham
Mr. Robert Lee Higgin
botham, 83, of Route 1, Brooks,
Kelley road, died Sunday
morning at his residence.
Mr. Higginbotham was a
native of Walton County and
had been a resident of Fayette
County for 32 years. He was a
retired farmer and a member of
the Baptist church.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Mattie Kinzy Higgin
botham; 2 daughters, Mrs.
Margaret Benton of Griffin and
Mrs. Doris Douglas of Stone
Mountain; a brother, Paul
Higginbotham of Athens; 5
grandchildren and 2 great
grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday
morning at 10 o’clock in the
chapel of Haisten Funeral
Home in Griffin. The Rev.
Worth Huckaby will officiate
and burial will be in the Brooks
Memorial cemetery. The body
will remain at the funeral home.
Arctic caribou
herd dwindles
The estimated population of
the western Arctic herd of ca
ribou has dropped from 250,000
to between 60,000 and 50,000
over the past six years, says
National Geographic. This
crisis threatens the people in
Alaska’s inland villages, where
hunters still depend heavily on
caribou for food in the winter.

Funds for Spalding County's 1978 Fiscal Year budget.

What’s
happening -
Revival
Revival services began tonight and will continue
through Friday night at the Meriwether Street Church of
God with services beginning at 7:30 each night. The Rev.
J. H. Bennett of Fayetteville, will be guest evangelist.
There will be a singing Saturday night featuring Fred
Coggins and his group from Thomaston. The Rev. Hulet
Smith is the pastor.
Revival
Emmanuel Tabernacle Church on North Hill Street
extension, is holding revival through Wednesday. The
Rev. Sammy Phillips is the evangelist. Services begin at 7
p.m. Special singing will be held each night. The Rev. J.
D. Madaris is pastor.
Woman’s Club
The October meeting of the Griffin Woman’s Club will
be held Thursday at 3 p.m. in the meeting room of the
Flint River Regional Library. A program on conservation
will be given by Ms. Susan Milsap of the Georgia Power
Company.
Exchange Club
Burton L. Wilson of the State Comptroller General’s
office will be guest speaker at the regular noon meeting of
the Exchange Club of Griffin on Tuesday, held at the
Moose Lodge. Claude Christopher is program chairman.
