Negotiators urge release
of women, children, ill
DUBAI, United Arab Emi
rates (AP) — An elite West
German antiterrorist team
stood poised for action today
while negotiators appealed for
release of the women, children
and ill among 87 hostages held
by Arab-speaking hijackers
aboard a German jetliner.
West German government
spokesmen in Bonn refused to
say whether a rescue operation
was planned. They said an as
sault would be ordered only if
requested by authorities in this
Persian Gulf sheikdom.
A top government official sent
from Bonn arrived late Friday
to help in negotiations but had
no direct contact with the
terrorists. Dubai authorities
have refused demands by the
hijackers to refuel the plane,
seeking concessions first.
As the twin-jet Lufthansa
Boeing 737 sat in the searing
desert sun for a second day, the
terrorists allowed airport
workers to deliver insulin for a
diabetic passenger and medi
cine for two other hostages, re
portedly including an American
woman. The passengers are
mostly German tourists, in
cluding about 10 beauty queens
who were on a complimentary
tour.
A Dubai government spokes
man said the captain of the
plane radioed the control tower
a message addressed to Ger
man Chancellor Helmut Sch
midt imploring him to meet the
hijackers’ demands.
He quoted the message as
saying, “On behalf of the crew
members, ladies and children of
the Boeing 737 Flight LHIBI, we
all depend on your decision. You
are our only and last hope.”
There were reported to be 31
women and seven children
aboard.
Schmidt and top West Ger
man leaders met in a crisis
meeting in Bonn to hear a situ
ation report from Dubai.
One of the hijackers —two
men and two women said to be
armed with pistols and gre
nades — identified himself as a
member of the radical Popular
Front for the liberation of Pal
estine (PFLP).
.They have threatened to blow
up the plane with the hostages if
demands for the released of 13
“comrades” in West German
and Turkish jails and a sls-mil-
lion ransom are not met by 8
a.m. EDT Sunday.
They said they are linked with
the West German terrorist
group known as the Red Army
Faction, which claimed respon
sibility for kidnaping industrial
ist Hanns Martin Schleyer last
month. The plane was seized to
back the German terrorists’ de
mands, the hijackers said.
An ultimatum they issued
Friday demanded that West
Germany arrange the release of
11 jailed German terrorists and
two Palestinians held in
Turkey. It said they must be
flown to Vietnam, Somalia or
South Yemen and each must be
given $43,860 in German marks.
Both the German and Turkish
governments said they were
studying the demands.
The plane carrying the anti
terrorist team left Germany
Thursday shortly after the Ger
man jetliner was hijacked while
on a flight from Majorca to
Frankfurt. But the commandos
missed the hijacked plane at
Cyprus, second of three
refueling stops. It arrived here
late Friday.
Hans-Juergen Wischnewski,
minister without portfolio and
Chancellor Helmut Schmidt’s
right-hand man, was sent here
as chief German negotiator.
Any government action on the
hijacker’s demands, however,
would have to be approved by
an all-party crisis staff in Bonn.
Federal court
overturns
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A
federal appeals court has over
turned the convictions of three
former officials of the Gilman
Paper Co. of St. Marys, Ga. The
men had been convicted of
paying off a fourth man to cover
up an alleged murder plot.
Nobody was ever murdered,
no plot was proved, and the sth
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
ruled Friday that convictions on
lesser charges were error
ridden.
The U.S. Justice Department
could request a rehearing by the
full 15-member appeals court.
But in the meantime, the ap
peals court sent the matter back
to U.S. District Court Judge
Alexander Lawrence with in
structions to order acquittals
for George Brumley Sr., former
vice president and manager of
the paper company ; Robert W.
Harrison, a former state
legislator and company lawyer,
and William T. Thomas, a
former Gilman chemist.
