Tony Randall is ...
Odd judge of network ratings
By DAN LEWIS
HOLLYWOOD - Tony
Randall is amused with the
suggestion that he has
gone from the No. 1 net*
work (ABC) to the No. 2
network (CBS).
nt’s a joke/ he says in
astonished tone. "Even the
No. 3 network (NBC)
makes astronomical
amounts.”
Network television ap
parently has a bottomless
money pit. The combined
earnings of the three net
works last year was $225
million, a quarter of a
billion dollars. The irony is
that the largest percent of
profit increase over the
preceding year was en
joyed by NBC - the net
work that finished No. 3 for
the season.
So it makes little differ
ence to Tony that "The
Tony Randall Show” will
be seen on CBS next fall,
rather than on ABC where
it originated last season.
1 hope it will be as good
next season as it was last,”
Randall intones. There will
be few changes. Devon
Scott, who played his
daugher (she’s George
Scott’s daughter in real
life) has departed.
Randall reports that it
was Devon’s decision.
'She left of her own
accord,” he reveals. *ln
the first scene of this
year’s opening episode, we
have her announcing that
she’s moving out to live
with her boyfriend. That
will make Mr. and Mrs.
Front Porch love it, I’ll
bet,” Randall observes
with a sly smile, at his
facetious suggestion.
Randall contends that
ABC did not drop "The
Tony Randall Show," in
which he plays a cautious,
conservative Philadelphia
jurist surrounded by
wacky characters in court,
and a brassy housekeeper
at home (Rachel Roberts).
'ABC did not cancel us,”
Randall claims,” they just
offered us 13 weeks with an
option for nine more. CBS,
on the other hand, offered
a firm 24 weeks."

stances, MTM Productions

Randall Show," comedy series to be broadcast on
Saturdays (9:30-10 p.m., ET) on CBS.
(Mary Tyler Moore’s com
pany) which owns the
series, decided to go to
CBS, where it has had a
good, long, and profitable
relationship. MTM has two
other new series going
there this season, spin-offs
'Lou Grant,” with Ed
Asner and "The Betty
White Show,” both from
the Mary Tyler Moore
series.
ABC’s was reluctant to
commit itself for an entire
season because the show
had marginal ratings in its
first season. Fred Silver
man, head of ABC pro
gramming, desired to see
if the ratings improved
during the early part of the
season. CBS, on the other
hand, is rebuilding under
Robert Wussler’s 16-
month-old administration
and is not as strong as it
had hoped to be. CBS felt
strongly that the Randall
show fit in the non-outra
geous, more family-ori
ented CBS ”mold” of situa
tion comedy.
Randall admits there is a
bit of trauma in leaving
ABC. He was there for five
madcap performers,
many of them her cast
mates from 'Laugh-In,'
when she hosts tonight's
parade of comedy acts
never previously seen on
network TV. (90 min.)
