Griffin-Wewnan
Cougars clip Bears
The Newnan Cougars over
came a 14-0 first quarter deficit
Friday to defeat the Griffin
Bears, 28-20.
The match-up between the
Region 6-AAA Division leaders
provided the expected thrills.
Both sides had plenty to cheer
about.
Griffin scored 2 quick TDs
before Newnan uncranked its
powerful offensive machine to
tie the score and then go ahead.
Coach Max Dowis’ Bears
knotted the score 20-20 with 3:19

to go in the fourth.
Newnan was trying to get in
field goal range with less than a
minute left, but instead, came
up with the tie-breaking touch
down on a brilliant 36 yard run
by Tim Clark.
Fans, who predicted a low
scoring game, were disap
pointed.
Griffin unveiled its veer-look
early and drove 90 yards in 17
plays for a TD. The lengthy
drive consumed 8 minutes 48
secons. It set the tempo for the
showdown between the
defending 6-AAA champions
and the league’s only unbeaten
team.
The game had some effect on
the 6-AAA standings but wasn’t
nearly as important as a couple
scheduled next Friday when
both division titles may be
decided.
Griffin plays R. E. Lee in
Griffin. The Rebels currently
are leading Division II of 6-AAA
with a 4-1 record. Griffin is
second at 4-2.
The Bears could regain first
place with a victory over the
Rebels and only Morrow and
North Clayton would stand in
Griffin’s path to the division
title and a playoff berth.

What more need be said? The scoreboard says it all.
A similar important game is
scheduled Friday in Division I.
Newnan, the current leader
with a 6-0 record, goes against
North Clayton, 5-2.
North Clayton needs a win to
stay in contention. A loss would
delay Newnan’s title drive.
“Beating Lee won’t be the
same as winning the division
title,” Coach Dowis said. “We
still have 2 tough opponents in
Morrow and North Clayton.
However, a loss to Lee would be
disastrous,” the coach said.
What did Coach Dowis think
of the Griffin-Newnan game?
“It was a great one. We have
been in a lot of great games
over the years and last night’s
was one of those.
“We could have won it but we
didn’t stop them when we
needed to. I guess you have to
attribute that to Newnan. They
have a great backfield. Their
quarterback is super.
“I thought we played a good
game. We did exactly what we
set out to do, especially on that
opening drive,” Coach Dowis
said.
The coach agreed that
Griffin’s opening 90 yard drive
was one of the best he’d seen in
years.
“Our plan was to carry it to
them. We didn’t plan to bobble
the kick off but everything else
went well,” Coach Dowis said.
Mis-handling the kickoff put
Griffin in a hole at its 10. The
Bears didn’t stay there.
Russell Miller, who rushed for
167 yards on 31 carries, started
the lengthy march with a 4 yard
burst. Ricky Williams got 6 and
Miller gained 6 more. The drive
was on.
Griffin picked up 6 first downs
as it worked its way 90 yards in
17 plays.
The final 10 yards came on a
quarterback keeper by Andra
Reid.
Ricky Pfrogner kicked the
extra point with 3:12 left in the
first quarter.
Griffin kicked off and Tim
Clark, who scored the game
winning TD, fumbled on
Newnan’s first play from
scrimmage.
Linebacker Jeff Jackson
pounced on the free ball and
Griffin was in offensive
business at the Newnan 29.
Miller scored from 17 yards
out with 1:19 to go in the first.
Pfrogner’s extra point kick was
true and Griffin was on top, 14-0.
Newnan came roaring back
with the help of two 15 yard
penalties.
The costly assesments and a
19 yard run by Newnan’s fine
quarterback, Chip McMillian,
put the Cougars in scoring
position at the Griffin 16.

the 4 early in the second
quarter. The extra point was
good and Griffin led 14-7.
Newnan got a big break a few
minutes later.
Victor Hart picked off a
Griffin pass and returned it to
the Bears’ 26.
After reaching the 23,
Newnan was stuck with a 15
yard penalty.
Anthony Alford scored from
40 yards away with 8:25 to go in
the second. The extra point was
good and the score was tied, 14-
14.
Griffin took the following
kickoff and drove to the Newnan
31 where it ran out of downs.
Newnan then drove to the
Griffin 25 with the help of a 15
yard penalty.
Griffin’s defense came alive.
Williams cracked Clark for a 5-
yard loss. Kent Head, Chuck
Scott and Eric Jackson got
McMillian for a 14 yard loss.
Newnan finally ran out of downs
and halftime came with the
score knotted.
Griffin had 11 first downs and
179 total yards in the first half.
Newnan had 6 downs and 108
total yards.
The Cougars took the second
half kick and drove 75 yards for
the go-ahead TD.
After making it to the Griffin
8, Newnan’s offense bogged
down momentarily.
Newnan had a first and 8 at
the 8. Three downs netted 5
yards. Clark scored on a fourth

the third.

version. The attempt failed on a
good play by defensive end
Chuck Scott.
Tommy Joe Coleman gave
Griffin its next possession with
a pass interception at the Bears’
39.
Griffin drove 61 yards for the
tying TD. The drive took 10
plays and featured the running
of Miller and quarterback Jeff
Ector.
Miller scored the tying TD
from 7 yards out.
Pfrogner’s extra point kick
sailed to the left, leaving the
score 20-20 with 3:19 left.
Newnan began its game
winning drive at the Griffin 35.
With time running out, the
Cougars stayed with their
ground game in an attempt to
reach field goal territory.
McMillian went to work. He
picked up one first down to the
45 and got another at the Griffin
45.
The crafty signal-caller
ripped off 9 yards to the Griffin
36 with 56 seconds left.
He called an option again.
McMillian was being dragged
down when he pitched off to
Clark, who worked his way
down the sideline on a 36 yard
TD run.
“When we had McMillian in
our grasp, the defenders
released on the pitch man which
was a mistake,” Coach Dowis
said.
McMillian made a 2 point
conversion as Newnan had its
28-20 victory.
Griffin’s offense, which has
struggled at times, played its
finest game.
The Bears accumulated 20
first downs and 293 total yards.
Newnan had 13 first downs and
273 yards.
Miller accounted for 167 yards
with some great blocking from
Tightends Bubba Andrews and
Bobby Willis, tackles Barry
Bunn, Zach Holmes and Keith
Barrow and guards Keith
Mathis, Victor Perdue and
Kenny Hunt and center Bart
Mills.
Newnan’s Tim Clark had 129
yards and McMillian rushed for
69.
Linebacker Jeff Jackson led
in tackles with 9. Bobby Willis
and Kent Head made 6,
Reginald Warren, Kenny
Barrow, Chuck Scott and J. C.
Davis made 4, Cyrus Jackson 3
and Ricky Williams and Marvin
Curtis made 2.
Coach Dowis expects another
great game here Friday when
Griffin plays R. E. Lee.
“They are as good as we are
and fans can look for another
good game,” the coach said.

Bearcats score second upset
Associated Press Writer
Coach Miller Shealy thought
his Bainbridge Bearcats had
peaked last week when they up
set favored Thomasville 28-20.
But the Bearcats, led by
Shealy’s son, Kent, got the sec
ond upset of the season Friday
night at Bainbridge when they
beat Dougherty, a top contender
for the region lAAA title, in a 21-
20 squeaker.
“Well, I thought we moved
the ball real well the first half
and controlled it and didn’t let
Dougherty get it,” said Shealy,
still dazed at the outcome. “We
also got the big play when we
needed it.”
The big play came in the third
quarter after Bainbridge
recovered a fumble by Doug
herty’s Scedric Moss. Running
back Clyde Mackey, who had
125 yards on 31 carries, scored
from the one on fourth down.
“Our defense really didn’t get
going, and later, in the second
half, we just didn’t have enough
offense,” said Coach Luther
Welsh of Dougherty.
Bainbridge’s other scores
came on a 24-yard touchdown
pass from Shealy to Donald
Barber and an 11-yard toss to
Lee Walker. A two-point con
version pass to Barber after
Mackey’s touchdown sealed the
game for the Bearcats, now 3-3.
Hewlett Boone scored touch
downs of five, five and seven
yards for the Trojans, ranked
10th in Class AAA in an Associ
ated Press poll. Dougherty is
now 4-2 for the year.
