Pike coach pleased with effort
as battered Pirates suffer loss
Pike County Coach Bobby
Floyd was not pleased with the
score on the board Friday night,
but he was pleased with the
effort his players put into the
game with Mary Persons.
Mary Persons turned 2
blocked punts and a long punt
return into touchdowns to beat
Pike, 2M.
“Our boys made a good ef
fort; they played a good game,”
Coach Floyd said.
Once again, the coach said,
mistakes hurt the Pirates who
were plagued with injuries and
were playing much of the game
with an inexperienced back
field.
Perry Burden, who had
suffered a back injury last week
and was a doubtful as a starter,
played part of the game. He did
not start.
Senior Johnny Pilkenton was
called on to do a good bit of the
running for the Pirates. The
running was shared with
sophomore quarterback Andy
Cooper, Burden and senior
Stanley Moses.
The first quarter appeared as
if Mary Persons would run up
the score against Pike County.

“The offensive line did an

Peck also praised his

Wilkes to 9 total yards and no

Barnesville Academy put

Love not part
of baseball
By FRED ROTHENBERG
AP Sports Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Love
is an integral part of tennis. The
New York Yankees are the best
proof that it has nothing to do
with baseball.
“Nobody cares about our
problems as long as we win,”
said Reggie Jackson. “People
give credence to the things that
don’t matter to ballplayers. All
the players want to do is play
baseball.”
Once again the Yankees left
their problems in the locker
room and made problems for
the Dodgers on the field, whip
ping Los Angeles 5-3 Friday
night to take a 2-1 lead in the
1977 World Series.
Jackson joined the Yankees’
other major malcontents, Mick
ey Rivers and Thurman Mun
son, in scoring three first-inning
runs.
Then the Yankees’ potential
free agent, Mike Torrez, was
sensational after yielding Dusty
Baker’s three-run homer in the
third inning. Rivers knocked in
the winning run in the fourth
and Jackson scored the insur
ance run in the fifth.
“Personal problems don’t
bother my playing,” said Riv
ers, the Yankees’ leadoff man
and the catalyst of their offense
who has asked to be traded from
time to time this season.
“I ain’t been hitting,” said
Rivers, who snapped an O-for-lO
streak with two doubles and a
single, one run scored and one
RBI. “But I’m starting to pick
up just where I left off in the
playoffs.”

The Flint River Academy
offense came alive Friday
night, but it was not enough to
overcome the heroics of Todd
Sauls of Piedmont Academy
which took home a 33-14 victory
from Woodbury.
Sauls scored 4 touchdowns
and gained 282 yards against
Flint River. Last week Sauls

Coach Curtis Morris of Flint

with the offensive play of his
team. “We moved the ball

we have in previous games,” he
said.
Flint River had hoped to hold

was unable to contain him.

the American League’s Most

a shame because the fans in
New York have treated me so
super. Money is one of the many
things that have something to

Jackson sounded drained
after the game, more likely the
result of the controversy he
triggered when he criticized
Martin for using a rusty Cat

than the game he just played.

said Torrez of the game-ending
whiffs of Manny Mota and Da

Torrez termed the pitch to
