1,800 leaders expected to attend 156th Baptist Convention
ATLANTA—The 156th annual
session of the Georgia Baptist
Convention, Nov. 14-16 at
Wieuca Road Baptist Church in
Atlanta, will stress the need for
daring missions through the
Bold Mission Thrust campaign.
It is an emphasis upon
establishing missions and
mission churches wherever
they are needed within the next
23 years.
Nearly 1,800 Baptist leaders
will attend the Convention, and
over 2,500 are expected to
participate in the closing
session Wednesday evening.
This year’s conference theme
will be “Mobilizing For Bold
Mission,” according to Dr.
Alvin H. Brackett Jr., chairman
of the Committee on Order of
Business.
The Convention meets an
nually to plan work for the next
year, hear reports on agencies,
institutions and programs, and
participate in inspirational
services. It represents over
2,900 Baptist churches and more
than one million Baptists in
Georgia.
Major speakers for the
meeting include: Dr. Franklin
D. Pollard, Jackson, Miss.,
pastor of First Baptist Church;
Dr. Duke K. McCall, Louisville,
Ky., president of Southern
Baptist Theological Seminary;
Rev. Tommy Jones, Macon,
pastor of Vineville Baptist
Church; Dr. Jean Hendricks,
Atlanta, academic dean at
Mercer University in Atlanta;
Dr. Landrum P. Leavell, New
Orleans, La., president of New
Orleans Baptist Theological
Seminary; Dr. Carolyn
Weatherford, Birmingham,
Ala., executive secretary of
Southern Baptist Woman’s
Missionary Union; Dr. C.

Singing
A singing will be held at the
East Griffin Congregational
Holiness Church on Saturday,
Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. Singing will
feature the Motes Brothers.
Pastor is the Rev. Leeco Smith.
The public is invited.
Recording
Tape recordings of the entire
Sunday service at Mount Zion
Baptist Church will be available
to the sick and shut-ins. Those
interested in the recording
should contact the pastor, the
Rev. Cleopatrick Lacy.
Woman’s Day
Mt. Calvary Baptist Church
at Milner will observe Woman’s
Day Sunday with “Mother”
Ross as the speaker at 2 p.m.
The pastor is the Rev. R.C.
Freeman.

Ronald Goulding, Washington,.
D.C., associate secretary of the
Baptist World Alliance; and Dr.
H. Edwin Young, Columbia,
S.C., pastor of First Baptist
Church.
Dr. Paul McCommon,
secretary of Church Music for
the Convention, will be music
director during the meeting.
Dr. William L. Self, pastor of
the host church and Georgia
Baptist Convention president,
will preside at the three-day
meeting and will deliver the
president’s message Monday
night at the opening session. Dr.
Pollard will also speak Monday
evening.
An added attraction on the
first night will be recognition of
Michael Zhidkov and Alexei
Bichcov, Baptist leaders in
Russia.
Dr. McCall will open four of
the seven sessions with
devotionals.
Tuesday morning’s con
vention sermon will be brought
by Rev. Jones. Tuesday af
ternoon Dr. Hendricks will
speak on Christian education,
followed by Dr. Leavell
speaking on theological
education.
Tuesday night, speakers will
be Dr. Weatherford and Dr.
Goulding. Dr. Harold Carter,
pastor of New Shiloh Baptist
Church in Baltimore, Md., will
deliver the message Wednesday
morning.
As a special feature, a service
will be held at 3 p.m. Wed
nesday afternoon to dedicate a
historical marker at Georgia
Plaza Park, located in front of
the state capitol. The park site,
comer of Washington and E.
Mitchell streets in Atlanta, is
where the old Second Baptist
Church was located. The

The film showing of “His
Land” has been rescheduled. It
will be shown at Providence
Baptist Church in Williamson
on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The
public is invited.
Youth Night
A youth night program will be
held Sunday at 7:30 at the Mt.
Pleasant Baptist Church on
East Mclntosh road. The Rev.
E.J. O’Neal of the West Mt.
Sinai Baptist Church in Bar
nesville will be guest speaker.
The Rev. Horace Fuller, Jr. is
the pastor.
Board meeting
The Junior Usher Board of the
Antioch Baptist Church will
sponsor its first celebration
program on Sunday at 6 p.m.
The Rev. H. Clark will be the
guest speaker.
WEDNESDAY - Chicken pot

sauce, fresh fruit, roll, butter,
milk.
THURSDAY — Pizza, lima
beans, tossed salad, apple
wedge, bread, milk.
FRIDAY — Fish sandwich,

The GBC Executive Com-
mittee will present its report
Tuesday morning. Among
matters to be recommended is a

Program budget for 1978, and
opposition be expressed to the

New officers will be elected
Tuesday afternoon. It is ex
pected that Dr. Self will be re
elected to a second term as
president, following customary
procedure. Four vice
presidents, a recording
secretary, and two assistant
recording secretaries will be
elected.
