Tiny Lesley Jane Nelson became the youngest person
ever to receive a permanent heart pacemaker, soon after
she was born on Oct. 18. Sharon and James Nelson,
9-day-old baby doing fine
with help of tiny pacemaker
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Lesley Nelson is nine
days old today and doing fine thanks to a tiny pacemaker
implanted in her chest just 2H hours after she was bom,
her doctors say.
“Looking back on it, I think she would have died’’
without it, says newborn-specialist Dr. Roberto Sosa. Sosa
assisted Dr. George Diacoff, the heart surgeon, in the
delicate operation.
“There was no doubt the baby was in distress,” Said Dr.
Daicoff. “We decided straightaway we would not chance
temporary pacing. We decided to put a permanent
pacer.”
All Children’s Hospital says Lesley is the youngest
person ever to receive a pacemaker.
She was a normal-term baby delivered Oct. 11 by
Caesarean section to Sharon Nelson, a 24-year-old
secretary from Fort Wayne, Ind.
Although the outlook is good for their infant girl, Mrs.
Nelson and her husband, James, 30, say they won’t rest
easy until the critieeFstage is passed.
Predominantly female jury
to hear Buddy Cochran case
AMERICUS, Ga. (AP) - A
predominantly female jury split
between blacks and whites has
been chosen to hear the trial of
an Americus truck mechanic
accused of ramming his car into
a Ku Klux Klan rally in
President Carter’s hometown.
Trial was to begin today for
Buddy Cochran, 30, who is
charged with eight counts of
aggravated assault in con
nection with the July 2 incident,
in which 30 persons were in
jured in Plains, Ga., about nine
miles west of here.
The jury, chosen Wednesday
after two days of questioning of
prospective jurors, includes six
white women, three black wom
en and three black men.
Earlier Wednesday, the Pres
ident’s brother, Billy Carter,
appeared in court and was told
he could be excused from a
subpoena to testify at the trial
because he was not present at
the time of the crash.

The President’s mother also
has been subpoenaed as a wit
ness, as have numerous report
ers who covered the rally.
Superior Court Judge William
Blanks warned the jurors not to
discuss the case with anyone
and to avoid newspaper or
broadcast stories about it.
He also told them to report to
him efforts by anyone to contact
them about the case or to in
fluence their judgment con- -
cerning it.
Defense attorney Robert R.
Bryan has contended that hos
tility toward Cochran in this
south Georgia community has
made a fair trial impossible, but
his motion to have the trial held
elsewhere was denied.
During hearings Tuesday and
Wednesday, prosecutors asked
prospective jurors whether they
could be impartial in deciding
the case, and defense attorneys
asked if they were members of
from Fort Wayne, Ind., check Lesley in the newborn in
tensive-care unit here at All Children’s Hospital. (AP)
“The doctors say they don’t think she’ll be over the
critical period for the next couple of weeks,” Mrs. Nelson
says. “We’re still living day-by-day just hoping for the life
of our baby.”
The pacemaker, still in the experimental stage, is pro
grammed to be adjusted by computer hookup outside the
chest. It’s called permanenet because the recipient should
be able to go about 10 years without surgery.
Mrs. Nelson’s physician in Indiana found that the fetus’
heartbeat was only 40 beats a minute, when it should have
been at least 120 beats. He contacted Dr. Diacoff, a friend
from medical school, and he consented to do the implant.
“We came a long way and were expecting anything to
happen, but we had to give it all we had,” says Mrs.
Nelson, who lost her first child to a similar heart defect 15
months ago.
‘ ‘A couple of nights ago I got to hold her for the very first
time,” says Mrs. Nelson. “It was so thrilling. I can’t wait
to take her home and show her off.”

NEW YORK (AP) — An ex
hibit of color photographs by
James Valentine showing the
wild, natural beauty of Georgia
goes on display today at the
Images Gallery here.
The first showing of his work
outside Georgia shows how Va
lentine is using environmental
art in a new-style conservation
education program which he
developed.
The program was stimulated
by President Carter’s con
servation efforts while he was
governor of Georgia, Valentine
said. The portfolio of photo
