‘Soupbone ’ gets 20 years
Joseph “Soupbone” Wilson of
111 Lexington Ave., was sen
tenced to 20 years in prison
Thursday after a Spalding
Superior Court jury found him
guilty of the Dec. 24 armed
robbery of the Spalding Hosiery
Shop.
Testimony apparently con
vinced the jury even though he
did not actually commit the
crime, he was the “master
mind” behind it, his car and gun
were used and he got part of the
money.
Johnny Will Moreland, the
state’s main witness, pleaded
guilty to the offense in an
earlier term of court and is
serving a 12-year sentence at
the Troup County Stockade.
According to Moreland, the 2
had been “drinking and
smoking reefers”, earlier in the
afternoon on Christmas Eve
and “Soupbone” said he knew
“where a lick was that would be
just like taking candy from a
baby.”
“Soupbone” drove Moreland
to the store and gave him a gun,
Moreland said.
He said that “Soupbone” who
was posing as a customer, gave
him a signal and told him to “do
it now”.
Moreland said he stuck a gun
in employee Lee Hancock’s ribs
and held him hostage while he
demanded money from Asst.
Manager Ben Glow.
He took more than $3,200 in
cash and some checks, it was
brought out.

Moreland released Hancock
in the parking lot and fled on
foot through the railroad un
derpass toward East Broad
way, he said.
Later he said he met
“Soupbone” and divided the
money.
Jerome Furlow, 21, drove to
the shop with Wilson and
Moreland but was not charged
in connection with the incident.
He testified he had heard a
discussion earlier in the day
about a robbery.
Wilson claimed he went to the
store with Moreland to make a
purchase, he knew nothing
about the robbery, and he was
frightened when Moreland
pulled the gun, which he
claimed was not his.
Wilson said the robbery
Furlow referred to was a
robbery at a dice game which
had occurred that morning.
It was brought out in the trial
that Wilson had been convicted
of a robbery in 1963 and had
served one third of a 10 year
sentence.
He said that he had been
employed for some years by
Delta Airlines and was totally
disabled when he fell from the
ramp of a DC-6. He said he has
worked as a bar tender. He has
been employed at the Griffin
Country Club.
He told Judge Andrew
Whalen, Jr., that since his first
robbery conviction he has
reformed and was attending
church regularly.
It took the jury about 19
minutes to return the guilty
verdict.
Thge criminal session will
continue next week with a slate
of new jurors.
