Gout a defect in cells
By Lawrence Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB—Each
year at this time I get the
gout in my toes and my
Achilles heel and ankle. I am
taking Colbenemid tablets
which don’t seem to be very
effective. I take a vitamin
pill daily and also 100 units of
vitamin E. I am on a low
cholesterol diet and am won
dering if it has any effect on
my gout. What causes the
gout? Is there any value in
taking vitamin E for it as
that seems very controver-
DEAR READER-Gout is
caused by an overproduction
of uric acid by your own
body cells. It is really a
defect in the way your cells
function.
Medicines are designed to
relieve the acute attack, to
help the body flush out ex
cess uric acid through the
kidneys or to limit the pro
duction of uric acid by your
own cells. I am sending you
The Health letter number 2-
3, Gout, Uric Acid, to give
you much more information
on what gout is and what to
do about it. Others who want
this information can send 50
cents with a long, stamped,
self-addressed envelope for
it to me in care of this
newspaper, P. O. Box 1551,
Radio City Station, New
York, NY 10019.
No, vitamin E will not
help. It has no effect on how
your body produces uric
acid. This is a good example
of why I get annoyed with
outlandish claims advertis
ing vitamin E. It prevents
people from getting the med
ical care they need while
wasting money on some
thing that will not help them.
The low cholesterol diet is
fine. If you are on the right
diet it may help prevent
disease of the arteries that
often accompanies gout.

Sticky skillet problem
By Polly Cramer
POLLY’S PROBLEM
DEAR POLLY - I bought a cast iron skillet and
washed it before using but then the handle became all
sticky. I have been told I should have ’treated" the
skillet before attempting to use it. Could you tell me
how to do this and will it take the stickiness off the
handle? - VALERIE.
DEAR VALERIE- Your skillet should have been
seasoned before using. Wash and scour with a mild
cleanser. Do this to the handle too and that may stop
the stickiness. Wash off and dry thoroughly. Apply a
generous coat of salad oil or unsalted fat to the inside
of the skillet with either a paper towel or a brush.
Put in the oven set on low heat and leave for a couple
of hours but every 15 minutes or so rub the fat around
again.
When removed from the oven wipe all grease out
with a paper towel, wash well in soap suds, rinse and
dry. The first few times the skillet is used a little of
the unsalted fat should be rubbed on the inside as the
seasoning process takes a bit of time. That sticky
handle may be caused from grease or a coating that
was on the pan. I would keep working on it with a
steel wool pad and cleanser. There is nothing like a
cast iron skillet for frying chicken, etc. — POLLY.
DEAR POLLY - I am writing this letter in answer to
Carol’s Pet Peeve about speeding truck drivers. I am
proud to say my father is a truck driver and I know they
get their share of tickets, too. I follow just as many tourists
who do 40 miles an hour up hill and 80 miles an hour down
hill as I do truckers. These drivers are just trying to make
a living like everyone else so do let them alone. From one
who knows and is PROUD to be a truck driver’s daughter. -
- JANIECE.
DEAR POLLY - With our nation’s shortage of water I
feel the need of using every bit more carefully. We run a
dehumidifier in our basement and save all the water.
Besides other normal everyday uses I often empty the pan
into the washer or I put it in a bucket to save to use for
watering my indoor and outdoor plants.
I enjoy sewing and save every long strip of scrap
material to keep for tying up my tomato plants to their
stakes - MARGE.

I suspect that you need to
be treated regularly before
you develop an attack. With
a good program that you
stick to you can control the
level of uric acid and proba
bly prevent your attacks.
But you must consider it a
lifetime program if you want
to get good results.
DEAR DR. IJYMB-I have
high cholesterol and I
haven’t been able to get my
cholesterol down by diet.
The doctor gave me Atro
mid-S and one capsule a day
didn’t do it either. Now I am
taking two. I read where you
can get reactions from Atro
mid-S. What is a normal
cholesterol count? My blood
pressure is high too.
DEAR READER-You can
get into trouble with almost
any medicine. Even too
much oxygen can harm you
but you can’t live without it.
Usually the way to find out if
you tolerate a medicine is to
use it. Atromid-S can be
used safely by most people
but it doesn’t always lower
cholesterol levels.
If you have any excess fat
at all under your skin get rid
of it. That may help your
cholesterol level a great deal
and may help your blood
pressure.
We usually think that the
people with a cholesterol
level below 220 have the
least risk of having a heart
attack, all other factors
being normal. Office and
clinic readings are often
done by different techniques
and may be normal even
when they are 240 to 250.
If you have both high blood
pressure and a high choles
terol you certainly should do
something about both.
Weight control is extremely
important and of course if
you smoke you should stop
at once.
