Gerbil talk
high toned
It has now been determined scientifically that the little
animals known as gerbils do talk to one another in their
own language—saying such things as “I love you and "I
feel lousy today”—but in ultrasonic syllables that can only
be picked up by highly sensitive instruments. University
of Texas scholars found that out.
It’s a matter of record that Catherine II of Russia kept
her wigmaker in an iron cage in her bedroom for more
than 3 years. She didn’t want anybody to know she needed
his handiwork.
Those who press for public nudity point out that there
are more than 300 lifesize naked figures in Michelangelo’s
Sistine Chapel ceiling.
The only fish that develops arteriosclerosis is the
salmon.
ELVIS
Q. "What were the 7 years of ‘private fame’ when Elvis
Presley made no public appearances?”
A. Between 1961 and 1968.
Q. "Where’d we get the expression T swan’ to mean ‘I
swear’?”
A. Comes from “I’s wan" which was lowdown ver
nacular in England once for “I’ll warrant.”
Q. “How many men named Custer were killed at the
Battle of the Little Big Hom?”
A. Three. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and his 2
brothers, Capt. Thomas Custer, and Boston Custer, a
civilian. Add to these, the colonel’s brother-in-law, Lt.
James Calhoun, and the colonel’s nephew, Arthur Reed, a
civilian. It was practically a Custer family wipeout.
LOVE AND WAR
Item No. 824 C in our Love and War man’s file is a
description by novelist Peter DeVries of a character
who’s “unfit for either marriage or adultery, being restless
in the one and remorseful in the other.”
The renowned writer of mystery novels, Mary Roberts
Rinehart, did the first drafts of her manuscripts in
longhand, using the same fountain pen for more than 25
years.
Rare is the free lance writer, even, who can tell you that
the term “free lance” was coined in 1820 by none other
than Sir Walter Scott.
There’s no such animal as a wild dromedary,

A dysmorphophobe is somebody who suffers from the
mistaken notion that he’s ugly. Scholars who’ve made a
study of the matter report that at least 1 out of every 50
patients who want plastic surgery is a dysmorphophobe.
Pretty profitable ailment, that one.

Governor Busbee’s appointment of
Henry Huckaby of Griffin as Com

Community Affairs was a good one.
Hank Huckaby is 35 years old and has

The department which he heads is a new
one in Georgia and Mr. Huckaby is the

Among other reasons, we like Huckaby’s

because we live here too but because this is

What a beautiful world this is.

There are special places all around

Mrs. Ernest Willis’ home on South Sixth

If you haven’t seen it yourself, it is well
worth a ride or better still a walk along
Sixth Street in the 500 block south of

Atlanta or Little Bitty Crossroads.
With his background of experience at the
Capitol and living in a more or less typical
Georgia community, he should be able to
balance things out in the field of local
government. That will be quite a job
though because his department works with
hundreds of local governments in the
state.
There is some significance as well as
pride in the fact that the two principal
spokesmen for local government in
Georgia now come from the same place,
Griffin. Officially, Huckaby is the man.
Semi-officially, Elmer George speaks with
authority as head of the Georgia Municipal
Association.

cumstances. Let me suggest several
things.
First, you can have a ministry of prayer.
I am convinced that most of us have little
idea of the power of intercessory prayer.
Begin to accumulate the names of
missionaries, evangelists, pastors and
others involved in some type of Christian
ministry. Find out about their work and
their needs, and then pray for them daily.
You may know of other people who need
your prayers, especially in your nursing
home. Some of the greatest warriors I
have ever known were older people.
Also, you can be a witness for Christ
right where you are. Undoubtedly there
are many people in your home who do not
know Christ. Down inside they know that
death is not far away, and they are
anxious. What an opportunity you have to
share Christ, who is “the way, the truth,
and the life” (John 14:6).
Remember the words of Psalm
148:12,13: “Both young men and maidens;
old men, and children: Let them praise the
name of the Lend.”
Love in
action
By BERTHA COMBS
Love is not love unless it is backed up by action.
Some people talk love but when it comes to the real
test they do not love people, they simply sham about
loving everybody. Love is often put to the test when
the individual does not recognize his opportunity to
show true Divine love towards his fellowman. Some
people seek to help only those whom they know or
who are in their social status and their friends or
kindreds.
Some people pretend to love for various reasons.
Some love for what they can get out of the deal;
some love selfishly; some do not even profess to
love; some love as a means to take advantage of
others. This kind of “so-called” love is not love at
all. Divine love is in the heart, given only by the
grace of God unto salvation which the Lord gives to
every true believer, the power that takes the stain of
guilt away from the repenting sinner. It is well to
remember that all men sin, and while this is true,
the unforgiven sinner plans to sin; the redeemed
soul makes a mistake and sins and then he repents
of his sins and begs forgiveness of God.
“Love In Action” means to help those who are in
need of the dally material things of life such as
bread and those things for the preserving of mortal
life. “Love In Action" is expressed by helping those
in need of spiritual strength and encouragement in
times of troubles. If a person makes a mistake it
shows Christian love when another helps the fallen
individual get right again. “Love In Action” is to
reach out and help the needy regardless of race,
color, culture or national origin. With all of the
hijacking going on in the world, love, Divine love
reaches out from the true Christian in sincere
prayer for the hostages and the breakers of the law
as well. This kind of action shows world love for all.
One may have wealth today but the next day he
may or can become a beggar. The goods of this
world are given man to enjoy righteously, to share
with others less fortunate, yet the individual must
not “waste his substances.” If the individual is too
narrow in his thinking, too begrudging in his giving,
he will come to want whether in this world or in the
world to come. “For God so loved the world, that he
gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believe th
in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
St. John 3:16. God loved us first. It is up to each
person to believe truly in God the Father, the Son,
and the Holy Ghost.
To love means more than lip service. The true
lover exerts action and service to humanity
wherever the needs are found to friend or foe, saint
or sinner. Love suffers long and is kind. Although
the individual shows love toward others he may also
see hate shown to him by others, yet the true
Christian being filled with the love of God, cannot let
himself hate.
In thinking of "Love In Action” it is well to know '
the Commandments of love which Jesus Christ
sounds down through the ages to man, “And he
answering said. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God
with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all
thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy
neighbor as thyself.” St. Luke 10:27.
There are persons who say they love the Lord and
at the same time they show hate, jealousy, envy,
and malice toward people that they know in this
world. No man has seen God. The chosen men and
women of God have heard His wonderful Voice, and
have had heavenly and holy dreams and visions
which have transcended the minds of mortal men.
To love the Lord God of heaven and earth and the
universe, faith must be deeply rooted in the mind
and soul and heart and the entire body. To love the
Lord truly one will strive to do His will and to obey
His Commandments through faith and works, “Love
In Action.”
