Darlington Tigers

Coach Charlie Davidson felt
overlooked at the beginning of
the year when many counted his
Darlington’s Tigers out of the

Georgia high school football

“Four teams will have to

“It’ll be tough, it’ll be a battle,
but we hope we’ll be there.”
Davidson's wishes were an

Tigers demolished Pepperell 28-

The Bulldogs upset the Cougars 7-0 Friday. It was
Newnan’s first defeat and only Rockdale’s second win.
Opponents are now taking Rockdale seriously after
impressive wins over Jonesboro and Newnan. Prior to
that, the Bulldogs had dropped 7 straight.
Rockdale gets another chance for an upset this week. R.
E. Lee plays Rockdale Friday in Conyers. Lee needs a win
to wrap up the Division II crown.
North Clayton, one of the finer teams in 6-AAA, stymied
Lee’s title race Friday with a 30-14 victory over the
Rebels.
That victory kept North Clayton and Griffin in the title
picture.
R. E. Lee has a one game lead over Griffin in Division
11.
If Lee falters in its last 2 games, and Griffin defeats
North Clayton Saturday at Tara, then the Bears get the
Division II title.
However, if Lee wins either of its last 2 games or Griffin
falls to North Clayton, the title goes to Lee.
Newnan is fairly secure in first place in Division I. The
Cougars can wrap up the subdivision crown Friday by
defeating Newton County.

Vikings edge
Falcons, 14-7
ATLANTA (AP) — “That is a
.... good defensive team,”
Minnesota running back Chuck
Foreman said after the Vikings
barely edged the revitalized At
lanta Falcons 14-7 Sunday.
“They make the plays when
they needed them” said an ad
miring Foreman, who broke a
51-yard run that set up Fran
Tarkenton’s six-yard scoring
toss to tight end Bob Tucker in
the final period to snap a 7-7 tie.
The victory put the Vikings in
command in the National Foot
ball League Central Division
with a 5-2 record. The Falcons,
4-3, remained tied for the lead in
the Western Division with Los
Angeles, a 27-26 loser to New
Orleans.
The Falcons, one of the worst
teams in the NFL the past two
years, winning only four games
each season, have turned
around and been among the de
fensive leaders all season under
first-year coach Leeman Ben
nett.
And Foreman, Tarkenton and
Coach Bud Grant each had
praise for the Falcons’ defen
sive unit.
Foreman, except for his one
big run, was held to only 40
yards in 22 other carries, but it
was that burst to the Atlanta
one-yard line midway in the fi
nal quarter that provided the
winning margin.
“It felt good,” said Foreman,
who was caught from behind by
Atlanta safety Ray Brown. “It
didn’t matter that I got caught.
Those type of runs have been
far and few between this year."
His previous longest run had
been 18 yards, he said.
The only other scoring in the
contest came in a 21-second
span in the second quarter when
the Falcons connected on a long
bomb and then the Vikings
retaliated.
Rolland Lawrence in
tercepted Tarkenton, the first of
three by the Falcons, and raced
to the Vikings’ 49. On the first
play, quarterback Scott Hunter
fired a 49-yard scoring pass to
tight end Greg McCrary,
playing in place of injured Jim
Mitchell.
Manfred Moore returned the

battle to I*l tie
The Green Machine and the
Blue Blazers battled to a 1-1 tie
Saturday in the Pee Wee Soccer
League.
The Red Devils defeated the
Suns, 4-1.
The Rangers and the Chiefs
tied, 0-0, and the Scouts
defeated the Indians 2-1 in the
Junior League.
The Rookies and the Hunters
tied, 0-0, and the Rebels
defeated the Pioneers 3-0 in the
Senior League.
Ronnie Franklin scored for
the Green Machine and Jamie
Wilson scored for the Blue
Blazers.
Ritchie Newton scored 3 goals
for the Red Devils and Trey
kickoff to his own 46 and on the
next play Tarkenton hit Sam
mie White to tie it at 7-7.
Both clubs missed scoring op
portunities as Minnesota’s Fred
Cox missed field goals of 27 and
42 yards while Atlanta’s Nick
Mike-Mayer missed on trys of
37 and 44.
Tarkenton, too, was im
pressed with the Falcons de
fense.
“It seemed like we moved the
football up and down the field
all day only to be frustrated by
my three interceptions and our
two fumbles, ’ said Tarkenton.
“I wanted that last touch
down,” said Tarkenton, ex
plaining why he jumped up and
down and hugged Tucker after
hitting the newly-acquired tight
end in the left comer of the end
zone with the touchdown strife.
“I didn’t feel they could come
back and get a touchdown on
our defense at that point,” said
Tarkenton, a former University
of Georgia star who makes his
home in Atlanta.
“The reason I wanted to win
was not because this is my
home town but because it gave
us a 5-2 record and puts us in the
driver’s seat,” he said. “We
were coming off a bad loss and
couldn’t afford another. We just
don’t lose two straight games. It
was a bad time for Atlanta to
catch us. ”
The Vikings had dropped a 35-
3 decision to the Rams Monday
night, their worst loss since
1967.
“We knew they were playing
good defense and nobody had
been scoring much against
them,” Tarkenton said of the
Falcon defense which had not
allowed a touchdown in 18
quarters until he and White
connected on their scoring toss.
The Falcons have only
allowed 46 points in seven
games this season. However,
their offense has scored only 70
points.
“I’ve been saying it every
week but we’ve just got to gen
erate more offense,” said a dis
appointed Bennett, whose club
managed only 10 first downs
and 212 total yards.
Manley scored 1. Chris Gatlin
scored for the Suns.
Jeff Wilson and Byron Brock
scored for the Scouts. Gavin
Lannan scored for the Indians.
Paul Guallamae scored 3
goals for the Rebels.
