Oakland pulls turnabout on Denver
By The Associated Press
Turnabout was fair play — or
perhaps it was the turnovers.
“Turnovers were the differ
ence. We had eight of them the
last time we met, but we didn’t
have any this time and were
able to keep the upper hand,”
Oakland Coach John Madden
said after his Raiders, literally
mugged by Denver 30-7 a couple
of weeks ago, turned around
and broke the Broncos’ backs
24-14 to bring the Mile High City
back to earth.
It left the teams tied atop the
American Conference West,
each at 6-1, an American Foot
ball Conference-best record
also held by Baltimore.
The National Conference,
meanwhile, now has the only
unbeaten team. The Dallas
Cowboys, off to their best start
since the team was formed in
1960, mauled Detroit 37-0 on Ro
ger Staubach’s three touchdown
passes and Efren Herrera’s
three field goals.

Rookie, point
battles continue
The fire may be out, but the
smoke still hasn’t settled.
There are still two smoldering
battles to be extinguished
during the remainder of the 1977
Winston Cup racing season —
(1) the sizzling fight for runner
up honors to Cale Yarborough in
the point championship race
and (2) the hotly-contested
struggle for Rookie of the Year
honors between Ricky Rudd,
Sam Sommers and Janet
Guthrie.
Yarborough locked up his
second consecutive point
championship with his fourth
place finish at the American 500
in Rockingham, N. C., but there
is still a scorching battle bet
ween Richard Petty, Benny
Parsons and Darrell Waltrip for
second place going into the Nov.

Only 47 points separate
second to fourth places in the
standings with Petty currently
occupying second with 4,284
points. Only 11 more behind is
third-place Benny Parsons with
Waltrip riding in fourth place
with 4,237 points.
Considered perhaps even a
greater battle is the struggle for
the coveted First National City
Travelers’ Check Rookie of the
Year award, which is worth an
immediate check for SIO,OOO
plus much more financial
support for the following racing
season.
Sommers, the veteran late

Red Miller, who had the
Broncos flying high in his first
season as Denver’s head coach,
could only applaud Oakland’s
solid, basic play.
“They used their weapons to
the utmost,” he said. “They had
great blocking in running to
their left side ... and our two
turnovers made a difference. It
was just the opposite of what
happened in Oakland” when
Denver played virtually error
free ball and the Raiders’ Ken
Stabler was intercepted seven
times.
That left side was manned by
guard Gene Upshaw and tackle
Art Shell, who opened gaping

Rudd presently has 211 points to
the 208 points posted by Som
mers. Guthrie’s ninth place
finish in the American 500

The Dixie 500 is very im
portant to Sommers if he is to
make a move to overcome the
deficit. Key to Sommers is to
finish ahead of Rudd and in one
of the top ten positions, where
bonus points are allotted to
rookie candidates.
Sommers is entering the East
Coast Winston Cup finale with
much confidence and desire. “I
feel we will make a good
showing in Atlanta,” said the
Savannah native. “We’ve
always had pretty good luck in
Atlanta.
“One thing’s for sure — we’re
not going to change our
strategy,” he added. “We’re
coming with hopes of winning.
We’ll be trying to finish just as
high as we possible can and
hopefully ahead of the other
rookies.
“It’s been a great race this
year,” continued Sommers.
“We’ve all worked hard to win
the rookie title and it will be
well-deserved by whichever
team wins it.”

for 187 yards and had a touch
down run apiece. Stabler start
ed the scoring with a 21-yard TD
pass to Cliff Branch and
Oakland had a 24-0 lead before
Denver did anything.
Cowboys 37, Lions 0
Meanwhile, Dallas did any
thing it pleased and Detroit, as
its score indicated, did nothing.
The Lions’ biggest problem was
coming in against a Cowboy
team that woke up after last
week’s sluggish performance.
"We are more intense now
than our Super Bowl teams,”
said Cowboys safety Cliff Har
ris. “This is the most intense
I’ve ever seen us in the regular
season.”
But Tom Landry, ever the
cool coach, downplayed the
runaway. “We’re still not a sol
id football team yet. We need
more consistency,” he said ...
which left Detroit Coach Tom
my Hudspeth almost speech
less.
“All I can say is that Dallas is
a tremendous football team,”
he gasped. The Lions didn’t
even cross midfield until the
fourth period.
Staubach clicked on passes of
14 yards to Billy Joe Dupree, 18
yards to Scott Laidlaw and 1
yard to Jay Saldi. Herrera’s
field goals covered 21,45 and 30
yards.
Colts 31, Steelers 21
The last time the Steelers vis
ited Baltimore, Terry Brad
shaw passed for three touch
downs in a 40-14 playoff romp.
This time it was Bert Jones’
turn. The Colts’ quarterback
came through with scoring
strikes of 26 yards to Roosevelt
Leaks and 13 yards to Lydell
Mitchell and a 6-yard TD run of
his own.
The Baltimore defense kicked
in with five interceptions and
Pittsburgh kicked itself around
with 112 yards in penalties.
Bears 26, Packers 0
Walter Payton’s 205 yards
rushing tied Gale Sayers’ 1968
club record for a single game —
and Chicago’s popular running
back was delighted he never got
the 206th.
’Dogs not overjoyed
with 23-7 victory
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - The
kicking game snuffed Rich
mond’s hopes of defeating the
Georgia Bulldogs here Satur
day, but the Bulldogs didn’t get
much of a kick out of the 23-7
victory.
“I’m happy that we won,”
said a frowning Coach Vince
Dooley, “but I’m certainly not
overjoyed by the way we won. I
was very disappointed in our
play in the second half when
Richmond outscored us 7-3.”
Richmond finished the game
with 301 total yards and 14 first
downs to Georgia’s 288 and 12.
“Defensive and offensively,
we played a helluva football
game,” Richmond Coach Jim
Tait said, “and we played it in
Georgia’s back yard. There are
a lot of SEC football teams that
come in here and do not play as
well. Breakdown in our kicking
game was the obvious dif
ference.”

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia
Tech fullback Rodney Lee
termed himself a sore loser, but
the Yellow Jackets had only
kind words for Duke quar
terback Mike Dunn, whose sev
en-yard pass clinched a 25-24
college football victory in the
last 13 seconds.
“Mighty right, I’m a sore los
er,” said Lee as he and his
teammates dragged back to the
locker room Saturday after the
Devils’ comeback victory. Tech
quarterback Gary Lanier sob
bed at his locker, saying, “We
had it won... I never felt so bad
in my life.”
But led by Coach Pepper
Rodgers, who said “Dunn is
terrific and I told him so after
the game,” the Yellow Jackets
were full of compliments.
“A class athlete who won’t
quit,” said linebacker Lucius
Sanford.
“The best quarterback we’ve
seen,” said cornerback Donald
Patterson.
Dunn completed seven passes
“I didn’t want to break Sa
yers’ record because Sayers is a
super guy. What’s a record? I
just wanted to win the game,”
he said after scoring on touch
down runs of 6 and 1 yards and
setting up Johnny Musso’s 3-
yard scoring run in the rout of
the Packers.
“Walter is super every game,
but we wanted to make this a
truly great game for him,”
rookie tackle Ted Albrecht of
Chicago said. "The coaches
wanted to take him out when he
had 196, but we asked them if he
could carry for one more play.
He did, and he got it.”

A touchdown by Bulldog Ke

Virtually nothing went right
for Buffalo. O.J. Simpson, a

yards in the first two periods.
